Does finding out the truth about her family merit destroying all that she has known? The Queen's Gambit is a precise chess maneuver that calculates key positions upon the board. In order to play, Carolyn must accept the terms of the inheritance. The other beneficiary, Luca Caldwell is maneuvered to participate in this archaic game of alliances. Their forced partnership begins on opposite sides. As they progress, they discover mounting secrets about both of their families. What starts out in conflict, they unite with one common purpose to discover who has been manipulating them. As the autumn leaves fall from the trees, Carolyn and Luca find themselves embroiled in the mounting lies. They begin to question if they are the players or merely pieces in a greater scheme. Will the white side control the board, or will black rule the game?

Book excerpt: Murray's History of Chess is regarded as the most authoritative and most comprehensive history of the game. Murray's aim is threefold: to present as complete a record as is possible of the varieties of chess that exist or have existed in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian chaturanga, in the beginning of the 7th century. The first part of the book describes the history of the Asiatic varieties of chess, the Arabic and Persian literature on chess, and the theory and practice of the game of shatranj. The second part is concerned with chess in Europe in the Middle Ages, its role in literature and in the moralities, and with medieval chess problems, leading up to the beginning of modern chess and the history of the modern game through to the 19th century.

Book Queen s Gambit Declined D50 59

Download or read book Queen s Gambit Declined D50 59 written by Bill Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Queen's Gambit Declined D50-59 The first recorded game using 4...Nbd7 in the QGD was by Emanuel Lasker in 1892 and gained popularity when it was used several times in the Cambridge Springs tournament in 1904. Practitioners of the opening have included Bogoljubov, Smyslov, Kasparov and Carlsen. This Black defense is also popular among amateurs because there are several traps White can fall into. Chapter 6 features puzzles from a favorite opening of Korchnoi, Gligoric and Piket and more recently Radjabov, Nakamura and Carlsen. The Lasker Defense was used by Anand to defeat Topalov in the final game of the 2010 World Championship. Overall, the openings covered in this book are solid but either side can open lines of play in and around the center and should be aware of the abundant tactical possibilities if the pressure at the center is released.A better way to study tactics This volume is indexed by ECO classification so that the reader can focus on his or her area of expertise. Each of these sections contains their own pitfalls and traps. It is more fruitful to study the tactics of an opening you might encounter as White or Black than to study the knight fork, pin or skewer, one tactic at a time. When the type of tactic is provided with the puzzle, it is already half solved. Study the more common tactics found within an opening you face and you will come away with an understanding of the real dynamics of the opening and pick up tactics you can already use.

Download or read book Gyula Breyer written by Jimmy Adams and published by New In Chess. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although his career lasted barely ten years, Gyula Breyer (1893-1921) was a highly successful and imaginative chess player. He won the championship of his native country Hungary as a teenager and achieved remarkable results against the leading players of his day. But first and foremost, Breyer was a revolutionary in his chess thinking. He promoted the idea of dynamic chess and formulated many of the Hypermodern concepts, long before others started their investigations. After his death, however, he was omitted from most of the chess history books, or relegated to a one line reference. Today he is only known for the Breyer variation, an ever popular defence against the Ruy Lopez. Jimmy Adams has unlocked Breyer’s legacy from the archives and made it accessible to the chess world at large, with translations from Hungarian into English. This monumental book presents 242 of his games, annotated by Breyer himself and many others. It features a large number of articles, columns and fragments from newspapers, magazines and books, sparkling with chess and literary wit. The majority appear in English for the first time – and indeed in any language other than Hungarian. By piecing together this material in chronological order, Jimmy Adams has constructed a mesmerizing biography, covering Gyula Breyer’s intense, unconventional and ultimately tragic life. Also included is a collection of his chess problems, some of which are truly amazing.

Throughout the period covered by this volume Queen's faced a long, hard struggle for adequate resources for research in terms of space, equipment, and most importanly, faculty time; the gradual development of graduate work; and the building of library resources. There was firm and creative leadership through the crises of the war and its aftermath and a renewal of optimism through the final decades of this history.

Book Everything You Need to Know about the Queen s Gambit

Download or read book Everything You Need to Know about the Queen s Gambit written by Chris Ward and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two great books from the Everyman Chess Library, Unusual Queen's Gambit Declined by Chris Ward and Declining the Queen's Gambit by John Cox, brought together in one volume. Chris Ward covers three offbeat but important defences to this ancient opening. The Chigorin Defence (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Nc6) creates dynamic imbalance in the position. The Albin Counter Gambit (1 d4 d5 2 c4 e5) is a tricky tactical line which can be deadly against an unprepared White player. The final variation (1 d4 d5 2 c4 Bf5) is an interesting way to try to solve immediately the problem of how to develop the queen's bishop in the Queen's Gambit Declined. In Declining the Queen's Gambit provides a repertoire for Black with the ever-popular gambit. Opening expert John Cox covers not one but two key options for Black. The Tartakower Variation is a sophisticated defence used successfully by world champions such as Kasparov, Karpov and Kramnik. The Lasker Variation is an easy-to-learn and reliable option devised by one of the legends of the game. Cox also demonstrates how to play against White's other tries, including the Exchange Variation, Catalan and Bf4 lines. He explains in detail the typical plans and tactics adopted by both sides, whilst also tackling the tricky subject of move-order possibilities.

Book The Queen s Gambit Declined

Download or read book The Queen s Gambit Declined written by Colin Crouch and published by Everyman Chess. This book was released on 1998 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Orthodox Defense to the Queen's Gambit is an extremely resilient system for Black, and a solid favorite of many world champions. As Black's main ideas are easily grasped, it is also a very popular option at club level. In this, the first major work on the subject, the flexible and powerful move 5 Bf4! is explained. While far less hackneyed than the standard systems in which the bishop goes to g5, the move denies Black the standard simplifying maneuvers and sets an entirely new set of problems.
