Download or read book Metaphors of Depth in German Musical Thought written by Holly Watkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to say that music is deeply moving? Or that music's aesthetic value derives from its deep structure? This study traces the widely employed trope of musical depth to its origins in German-language music criticism and analysis. From the Romantic aesthetics of E. T. A. Hoffmann to the modernist theories of Arnold Schoenberg, metaphors of depth attest to the cross-pollination of music with discourses ranging from theology, geology and poetics to psychology, philosophy and economics. The book demonstrates that the persistence of depth metaphors in musicology and music theory today is an outgrowth of their essential role in articulating and transmitting Germanic cultural values. While musical depth metaphors have historically served to communicate German nationalist sentiments, Watkins shows that an appreciation for the broad connotations of those metaphors opens up exciting new avenues for interpretation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Terrific! . . . Smart, and cinematic, this entertaining page-turner is so knowingly authentic only a genuine cop turned storyteller could have written it.” —Hank Phillippi Ryan, Agatha, Anthony, and Mary Higgins Clark award–winning author of One Wrong Word When the body of prominent Portland attorney Paul Ramsey turns up in the bottom of Casco Bay, following his loss of a multimillion dollar civil trial, Byron knows it’s no accidental drowning. Golden boy Ramsey had a dark side—and Detective Sergeant John Byron believes the key to solving his murder lies in uncovering those secrets someone wanted buried along with him. With the brilliant Detective Diane Joyner by his side, Byron takes on Ramsey’s former employer, the powerhouse law firm of Newman, Branch & DeWitt. But delving further into the troubled waters of Ramsey’s past only serves to lengthen the list of suspects—unleashing a perfect storm of corruption, betrayal, and murder that only Byron can stop. If he’s not too late. “A great read. . . . Coffin knows . . . police investigations from his days as a former detective for the Portland Police Department. He also knows how to craft a tightly spun tale.” —Portland Press Herald Beneath the Depths is one of the best police procedurals I’ve read in years—a road map of a city filled with good guys and bad guys, drawn painstakingly by an author who knows these streets as only an ex-cop can.” —Gerry Boyle, author of Straw Man “When a lawyer who’s already antagonized half the people in Maine winds up dead, every pine tree in Portland seems chock-full of suspects. . . . A sturdy, starchy police procedural.” —Kirkus Reviews

Download or read book Climate Change Ocean Acidification and Sponges written by José Luis Carballo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While sponges represent a very simple group of organisms, which are represented by over 8000 species, there is considerable interest in the increasing role they may play in future marine ecosystems. While we still have a comparatively limited understanding of how sponges will respond to ocean warming and acidification there is evidence that some species may have the ability to acclimate or even adapt to these stressors. This comprehensive collection of articles describes our current understanding of the impacts of ocean acidification and warming on sponges across multiple levels of biological organisation, and from the geological past to the present. With expert contributions from across the world this book represents the most up-to-date view on sponge responses to climate change. This book will be of interest to a wide audience of marine scientists and managers, who are grappling with how to manage, conserve and protect marine ecosystems.
