Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen Anne's Bounty: A Short Account of Its History and Work Queen Anne's Bounty, though for the past eighty years completely overshadowed by the Ecclesiastical Commission with its great resources, has an interest of its own as the first body incorporated to deal with any of the many problems of central Church finance. No general history of its origin and its activities has been given since the republication in 1845 of Hodgson's Account of Queen Anne's Bounty first published in 1826. The following pages are an attempt to give, very concisely and in non-technical language, a description of the purposes for which the Corporation was established in 1704, of the duties then and subsequently entrusted to it, and of the manner in which these duties have been and are now being carried out. Book The Imperial Origins of the King s Church in Early America 1607 1783

Download or read book The Imperial Origins of the King s Church in Early America 1607 1783 written by James Bell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-02-17 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of the King's church in Early America was shaped by the unfolding imperial policies of the English government after 1675. London-based civil and ecclesiastical officials supervised the extension and development of the church overseas. The recruitment, appointment and financial support of the ministers was guided by London officials. Transplanted to the New World without the traditional hierarchical structure of the church - no bishop served in the colonies during the colonial period - at the time of the American Revolution it was neither an English-American, or American-English church, yet modified in a distinctive manner.

Book What Is Queen Anne s Bounty

Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Is Queen Anne's Bounty?: The Question Asked and Answered With Reference to the Acts and Neglects of the Ecclesiastical Commission Since the first edition of this Pamphlet was published, I have the satisfaction of knowing that many who thought the ground assumed in it to be entirely untenable, have not only changed their minds, but have given the best proof of it, by subscribing the subjoined Petition against the further continuance of the First Fruits and Tenths Impost. The Petition, in point of fact, embodies the argument of the Pamphlet, and was drawn up with the assistance of a valued, honoured, and learned Brother in the Ministry. As an experiment upon the Clerical mind, I am entirely satisfied with the issue. I have reason to know that it would have been much more numerously signed, but from the circumstance of many of the Incumbents having been presented to their Livings by the Impropriators, and who were restrained from adopting it (I don't say improperly restrained, If for I respect their feeling, ) from the ungracious appearance that the seeming lo wage war against their patrons would present. Book The Tithe War in England and Wales 1881 1936

Download or read book The Tithe War in England and Wales 1881 1936 written by John Bulaitis and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brings to life a fascinating page of history in a scholarly but highly readable account of the "tithe war". During the 1930s, farming communities waged a campaign of "passive resistance" against Tithe Rentcharge, the modern version of medieval tithe. Led by the National Tithepayers' Association, farmers refused to pay the charge, disrupted auctions of seized stock and joined demonstrations to prevent action by bailiffs. The National Government condemned their "unconstitutional action", ruled out changes in the law and mobilised police to support the titheowners. Meanwhile, the Church of England and lay titheowners - including Oxford and Cambridge colleges, public schools and major landowners - sought to vindicate their right to tithe; in a particularly shameful episode, the Church established a secret company to buy taken produce and remove it from farms. This "tithe war" was fought outside farms, in the courts, in the press and in the wider arena of public opinion. It posed problems for the Church, legal system, and every political party; split the National Farmers' Union; and provided opportunities for the British Union of Fascists and other sections of the extreme right to cause disturbance. Drawing on extensive archival research, accounts in local newspapers, and private papers, John Bulaitis traces the evolution of what has been described as this "curious rural revolt", from the late nineteenth century to its climax in 1936, when the Tithe Act brought an end to this form of tax.
