Por su interés en acumular doctrinas de diferentes autores y su fidelidad hacia todos ellos, la obra de Carisio (c. 362 d.C.), un manual de gramática concebido para completar la educación del hijo del autor, es el pivote sobre el que se construye el estudio de las fuentes de la gramática latina: Elio Estilón, Lelio Arquelao, Antonio Gnifón, Ateyo el Filólogo, Varrón, César, Verrio Flaco, Valerio Probo, Remio Palemón, Plinio el Viejo, Flavio Capro, Cominiano y Julio Romano son algunas de las autoridades en materia gramatical que, desde la cita única hasta decenas de fragmentos, aparecen en la obra. En este volumen se destacan dos capítulos eruditos (15 y 17), que analizan la analogía y la anomalía como elementos dirimentes de la corrección lingüística, fundamentada ahora en los criterios de naturaleza, razón, uso y autoridad, este último responsable a su vez de la conservación de multitud de fragmentos de poetas y prosistas latinos para los que el manual de Carisio es, muchas veces, testimonio único.
