Book General Theory of Wave drag Reduction for Combinations Employing Quasi cylindrical Bodies with an Application to Swept wing and Body Combinations

Download or read book General Theory of Wave drag Reduction for Combinations Employing Quasi cylindrical Bodies with an Application to Swept wing and Body Combinations written by Jack N. Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wing-body interference theory of NACA TN 2677 applied to symmetrical wings in combination with quasi-cylindrical bodies permits the direct calculation of pressure-distribution changes produced by body shape changes. This theory is used to determine the relative magnitued of the wave-drag reduction produced by changes in cylinder cross-sectional area and that produced changes in cross-sectional shape (without change in area). The body distortion is expressed as a Fourier series, and an integral equation is derived for the body shape for minimum drag for each Fourier component. Thus the wave-drag reductions for the various Fourier harmonics are independent and additive.

Book Comparison Between Theory and Experiment for Interference Pressure Field Between Wing and Body at Supersonic Speeds

Download or read book Comparison Between Theory and Experiment for Interference Pressure Field Between Wing and Body at Supersonic Speeds written by William C. Pitts and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure-distribution data were obtained for a wing-body combination at Mach numbers of 1.48 and 2.00 and at Reynolds numbers of 600,000, 1,200,000 and 1,500,000 to investigate the effects of wing-body interference. The model was a single-wedge, rectangular wing mounted on a cylindrical body with an ogival nose. The body angle of angle of attack ranged between +6 degrees and -6 degrees and the wing-incidence angle ranged from 0 degrees to -5.7 degrees. The experimental pressure-distribution and span-loading results are compared with the linear, wing-body interference theory of NACA TN 2677.

Book Tables of Characteristic Functions for Solving Boundary value Problems of the Wave Equation with Application to Supersonic Interference

Download or read book Tables of Characteristic Functions for Solving Boundary value Problems of the Wave Equation with Application to Supersonic Interference written by Jack Norman Nielsen and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables are presented containing 69,000 values of a set of characteristic functions which first arose in problems of supersonic wing-body interference. The tables are useful in problems of supersonic flow involving aerodynamic shapes which are wholly or in part quasi-cylinders of nearly circular cross section. A number of uses are described in the aerodynamics of bodies alone, body-body or shock-body interference, wing-body interference, the vortex-panel interference. Three illustrative examples are worked out in detail. First, the pressure field due to fuselage indentation is calculated and presented in a form independent of Mach number. Secondly, the tables are applied to a problem involving a previously unpublished solution to the Navier-Stokes equations; namely, the boundary-layer profiles of a circular cylinder moved impulsively with a constant axial force in a viscous incompressible fluid. In the final example, the wave drag of corrugated circular cylinders is calculated as a function of the number of corrugations and their wave length. Several nonaerodynamic applications are pointed out in the fields of acoustics and heat conduction. Generally speaking, the tables are applicable to boundary-value problems of the second kind involving the wave equation in three dimensions with approximately circular cylindrical boundaries or involving the unsteady heat-conduction equation in two space dimensions with nearly circular boundaries.

Book Progress in Aeronautical Sciences

Download or read book Progress in Aeronautical Sciences written by D. Küchemann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-02 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 8 is a collection of papers that covers the widening field of aeronautical sciences. The first article deals with problems in fluid mechanics and practical aerodynamics. This paper includes reducing problems to integral equations; the comparison of calculated results with exact analytic solutions; and with experimental pressure distributions using various configurations. The book follows this discussion with a review of the methods for designing swept-winged aircraft, including the design of a symmetrical-fuselage combination at zero incidence. The text also reviews the propulsion characteristics of a hypothetical aircraft flying at hypersonic speeds, and then focuses on air-breathing engines to power hypersonic aircrafts of which the scramjet is the most promising. The publication renders a comprehensive report on the viscous flow in boundary layers in ducts under rarefied conditions. The book then reviews investigations made on the viscous flow through tubes, both in continuum flow and in free-molecule flow. Another paper develops the fundamental mathematical and physical bases of magnetohydrodynamic flow through ducts in the presence of an applied electromagnetic field. Such review is useful when applied to electromagnetic flowmeters, pumps, or generators. The volume can be helpful for aerodynamic researchers, aviation technologists and designers, and aeronautical engineers.
