Book A History of Christianity in Asia Vol II

Download or read book A History of Christianity in Asia Vol II written by Samuel Hugh Moffett and published by Orbis Books. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Christianity in the West has often been told, but the history of Christianity in the East is not as well known. The seed was the same: the good news of Jesus Christ for the whole world, which Christians call "the gospel." But it was sown by different sowers; it was planted in different soil; it grew with a different flavor; and it was gathered by different reapers. It is too often forgotten that the faith moved east across Asia as early as it moved west into Europe. Western church history tends to follow Paul to Philippi and to Rome and on across Europe to the conversion of Constantine and the barbarians. With some outstanding exceptions, only intermittently has the West looked beyond Constantinople as its center. It was a Christianity that has for centuries remained unashamedly Asian. A History of Christianity in Asia makes available immense amounts of research on religious pluralism of Asia and how Christianity spread long before the modern missionary movement went forth in the shelter of Western military might. Invaluable for historians of Asia and scholars of mission, it is stimulating for all readers interested in Christian history. --

Book Religious Experience and Self Psychology

Download or read book Religious Experience and Self Psychology written by Jung Eun Jang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the 1907 Korean Revival Movement from a self psychological perspective. The examination of the psychological processes in the movement based on Heinz Kohut's self psychology can shed light on religious experiences as selfobject experiences by identifying the sense of defeatedness and helplessness that Korean people experienced under Japanese occupation as what Kohut calls self-fragmentation of the Korean group self and explaining its therapeutic functions which facilitate potential for the narcissistic nourishment of the fragmented group self leading to renewed self-esteem, transformation, and empowerment of the Korean people. Korean people in the early 1900s experienced abuses and oppression by corrupt officials and exploitation by Japanese government. Through religious experiences which emphasized the individual repentance, the experience of God through the spirit, emphasis on prayer, and eschatological faith, the Korean Revival Movement in 1907 enabled its followers to experience mirroring and idealizing selfobjects which function as a role of transforming the lower shape of narcissism into the higher one.

Book Protestants and the Formation of Modern Korean Nationalism 1885 1920

Download or read book Protestants and the Formation of Modern Korean Nationalism 1885 1920 written by In-su Kim and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1996 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Asian countries were colonized by western Christian countries during the nineteenth century Korea was exploited and colonized by Japan. During this time, Korea fought hard to bring about her independence. Protestant leaders and missionaries contributed much to help form modern Korean nationalism through their evangelical works. Thus Christianity in Korea was identified with the national consciousness during Japanese occupation. This book discusses how Protestantism stimulated and encouraged the people to form their nationalism through two eminent Protestant leaders, Rev. Horace G. Underwood, the first Presbyterian missionary to Korea and Rev. Sun Chu Kil, the first native minister in Korea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing upon the religious writings of southern evangelicals, John Boles asserts that the extraordinary crowds and miraculous transformations that distinguished the South's First Great Awakening were not simply instances of emotional excess but the expression of widespread and complex attitudes toward God. Converted southerners were starkly individualistic, interested more in gaining personal salvation in a hopelessly evil world than in improving society. As Boles shows in this landmark study, the effect of the Revival was to throw over the region a conservative cast that remains dominant in contemporary southern thought and life.
