Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quartic Surfaces: With Singular Points The purpose of the present treatise is to give a brief account of the leading properties, at present known, of quartic surfaces which possess nodes or nodal curves. A surface which would naturally take a prominent position in such a book is the Kummer surface, together with its special forms, the tetrahedroid and the wave surface, but the admirable work written by the late R. W. H. T. Hudson, entitled Kummer's Quartic Surface, renders unnecessary the inclusion of this subject. Ruled quartic surfaces have also been omitted. For the convenience of readers, a brief summary of all the leading results discussed in this book has been prefixed in the form of an Introduction. I have to express my great obligation to Prof. H. F. Baker, Sc.D., F.R.S., who has given much encouragement and valuable criticism. Finally I feel greatly indebted to the staff of the University Press for the way in which the printing has been carried out. Book Classification of Normal Quartic Surfaces with Irrational Singularities

Download or read book Classification of Normal Quartic Surfaces with Irrational Singularities written by Yuji Ishii and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "If a normal quartic surface admits a singular point that is not a rational double point, then the surface is determined by the triplet (M, D, E) consisting of the minimal desingularization M, the pullback D of a general hyperplane section, and a non-zero effective anti-canonical divisor E of M. Geometric constructions of all the possible triplets (M, D, E) are given."

Download or read book Lectures on K3 Surfaces written by Daniel Huybrechts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K3 surfaces are central objects in modern algebraic geometry. This book examines this important class of Calabi–Yau manifolds from various perspectives in eighteen self-contained chapters. It starts with the basics and guides the reader to recent breakthroughs, such as the proof of the Tate conjecture for K3 surfaces and structural results on Chow groups. Powerful general techniques are introduced to study the many facets of K3 surfaces, including arithmetic, homological, and differential geometric aspects. In this context, the book covers Hodge structures, moduli spaces, periods, derived categories, birational techniques, Chow rings, and deformation theory. Famous open conjectures, for example the conjectures of Calabi, Weil, and Artin–Tate, are discussed in general and for K3 surfaces in particular, and each chapter ends with questions and open problems. Based on lectures at the advanced graduate level, this book is suitable for courses and as a reference for researchers.

Download or read book Enriques Surfaces I written by F. Cossec and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes representing the current state of knowledge about Enriques surfaces which occupy one of the classes in the classification of algebraic surfaces. Recent improvements in our understanding of algebraic surfaces over fields of positive characteristic allowed us to approach the subject from a completely geometric point of view although heavily relying on algebraic methods. Some of the techniques presented in this book can be applied to the study of algebraic surfaces of other types. We hope that it will make this book of particular interest to a wider range of research mathematicians and graduate students. Acknowledgements. The undertaking of this project was made possible by the support of several institutions. Our mutual cooperation began at the University of Warwick and the Max Planck Institute of Mathematics in 1982/83. Most of the work in this volume was done during the visit of the first author at the University of Michigan in 1984-1986. The second author was supported during all these years by grants from the National Science Foundation.

Book Complex Algebraic Surfaces

Download or read book Complex Algebraic Surfaces written by Arnaud Beauville and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-06-28 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed over more than a century, and still an active area of research today, the classification of algebraic surfaces is an intricate and fascinating branch of mathematics. In this book Professor BeauviIle gives a lucid and concise account of the subject, following the strategy of F. Enriques, but expressed simply in the language of modern topology and sheaf theory, so as to be accessible to any budding geometer. This volume is self contained and the exercises succeed both in giving the flavour of the extraordinary wealth of examples in the classical subject, and in equipping the reader with most of the techniques needed for research.

Book K3 Surfaces and Their Moduli

Download or read book K3 Surfaces and Their Moduli written by Carel Faber and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the latest developments concerning the moduli of K3 surfaces. It is aimed at algebraic geometers, but is also of interest to number theorists and theoretical physicists, and continues the tradition of related volumes like “The Moduli Space of Curves” and “Moduli of Abelian Varieties,” which originated from conferences on the islands Texel and Schiermonnikoog and which have become classics. K3 surfaces and their moduli form a central topic in algebraic geometry and arithmetic geometry, and have recently attracted a lot of attention from both mathematicians and theoretical physicists. Advances in this field often result from mixing sophisticated techniques from algebraic geometry, lattice theory, number theory, and dynamical systems. The topic has received significant impetus due to recent breakthroughs on the Tate conjecture, the study of stability conditions and derived categories, and links with mirror symmetry and string theory. At the same time, the theory of irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties, the higher dimensional analogues of K3 surfaces, has become a mainstream topic in algebraic geometry. Contributors: S. Book Hyperbolic Metamaterials

Download or read book Hyperbolic Metamaterials written by Igor I Smolyaninov and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic metamaterials were originally introduced to overcome the diffraction limit of optical imaging. Soon thereafter it was realized that hyperbolic metamaterials demonstrate a number of novel phenomena resulting from the broadband singular behavior of their density of photonic states. These novel phenomena and applications include super resolution imaging, new stealth technologies, enhanced quantum-electrodynamic effects, thermal hyperconductivity, superconductivity, and interesting gravitation theory analogs. Here I review typical material systems, which exhibit hyperbolic behavior and outline important new applications of hyperbolic metamaterials, such as imaging experiments with plasmonic hyperbolic metamaterials and novel VCSEL geometries, in which the Bragg mirrors may be engineered in such a way that they exhibit hyperbolic properties in the long wavelength infrared range, so that they may be used to efficiently remove excess heat from the laser cavity. I will also discuss potential applications of self-assembled photonic hypercrystals. This system bypasses 3D nanofabrication issues, which typically limit hyperbolic metamaterial applications. Photonic hypercrystals combine the most interesting features of hyperbolic metamaterials and photonic crystals.
