Book Alcoholism and Drug Dependence

Download or read book Alcoholism and Drug Dependence written by J. Madden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is for me, as President of the Merseyside Lancashire & Cheshire Council on Alcoholism, a signal privilege to write a brief foreword to these Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. During the week experts, from the world over, in all those disciplines which have a contribution to make to the solution of the problems of alcoholism and drug dependence, surveyed recent advances in our knowledge of the aetiology, epidemiology, early recognition, management, and the social and industrial implications of these twin scourges of the contemporary scene. The discussions were most helpful and enlightening even when a wide spectrum of conflicting views and experiences were revealed. The justification for adding yet another volume to the growing literature in this field is two-fold; first, that those taking part in the conference can study at leisure and in depth the transactions of the conference; and secondly, that those who were unable to attend might benefit from the most recent views of international experts in the diverse facets of one of the major current problems in world health. Book Broadening the Base of Treatment for Alcohol Problems

Download or read book Broadening the Base of Treatment for Alcohol Problems written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1990-02-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this congressionally mandated study, an expert committee of the Institute of Medicine takes a close look at where treatment for people with alcohol problems seems to be headed, and provides its best advice on how to get there. Careful consideration is given to how the creative growth of treatment can best be encouraged while keeping costs within reasonable limits. Particular attention is devoted to the importance of developing therapeutic approaches that are sensitive to the special needs of the many diverse groups represented among those who have developed problems related to their use of "man's oldest friend and oldest enemy." This book is the most comprehensive examination of alcohol treatment to date.

Book Alcoholism in Perspective

Download or read book Alcoholism in Perspective written by Marcus Grant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, an important change of emphasis had occurred in the field of alcoholism. Instead of seeing alcoholism as an ‘all or none phenomenon’ it was now recognised that a continuum of alcohol problems existed so that individual cases could show different degrees of dependence and different degrees of harm. Originally published in 1979, this book examines the implications of this change of emphasis. It looks at definitional, aetiological, epidemiological and socio-cultural questions and contains contributions from acknowledged experts in all of these areas. The scientific evidence in each area is fully reviewed and made comprehensible to the non-specialist reader and similarities between trends in thinking in different fields are emphasised. In addition, the book analyses the implications of the modern view of alcohol problems in terms of their theoretical basis and their practical application. A rational and pragmatic approach to the problems of working with alcoholics is analysed in some detail so that the links between new ideas and their manifestation in clinical practice are made clear. At the time, this book represented a multi-disciplinary approach to a complex problem where previous thinking had been clouded by too ready acceptance of untested hypotheses.
