Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Times, 1869, Vol. 6: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science To prepare protoxide of nitrogen for inhalation, then, great care must be taken to preserve its purity; consequently it becomes important to maintain, as nearly as possible, an equal temperature during the process of its manufacture, and, should any nitric oxide to be formed, to deoxidize or remove it, which is best done by a solution of ferrous sulphate, (sulphate of the protoxide of iron, ) and washing in water. From what we have said, this washing in water, and keeping the gas for any length of time over water, must be attended with great loss, as much of the gas is thereby absorbed. This may be, to a great extent, avoided by employing water at an elevated temperature, or a strong solution of common salt for the same purpose. When about to be inhaled as an anaesthetic, great care must be taxen that no oxygen or air become mixed with the protoxide; otherwise the peculiar effects described by Sir Humphry Davy are} observed instead of anaesthesia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dental Times, Vol. 7: A Quarterly Journal of Dental Science; July, 1869 It is very often the case that the patient will not return to have the permanent gold filling put in for three or four months, but in such cases I generally find the temporary filling in good condition and preserving the tooth; in fact, I think I would always prefer leaving the temporary filling in at least three months if I were sure it would preserve the tooth in all cases. My experience with this mode of treating exposed nerves, now for over two years, has been more successful than I imagined at first it could be, and I have no hesitancy in stating that, out of every ten healthy teeth filled in this manner, for comparatively healthy persons, nine of them have proved successful, and the Operation attended with but little or no pain, or at least no more than would follow an application to destroy the nerve. My faith has become so strong that I now cap in this way in almost every instance, rarely ever making use of nerve paste. I have several patients in the village whom I have treated teeth for in this manner, and have an opportunity to see them Often, therefore I know some Of my operations have been successful. I might mention, too, that I consider os artificial one of the best remedies for sensitive dentine. I saturate cotton in a thin mixture of it, and place it in the tooth, and let it remain two or three days; the cotton becomes hard, and serves as a temporary filling. I do not believe that, when the cavity of decay is so filled, as absolutely to prevent ingress of the uids of the mouth, that the disease ever advances; although my observations upon this point are not sufficient to furnish me with decisive proof that it is so. But I do affirm, with confidence, that a series of observations, running through a practice of ten years, have convinced me that in a vast majority of cases, caries of the teeth remains station ary, if the opening of the cavity of decay is well prepared and the cavity so filled as to exclude every thing from it, although decayed, dead and decomposed bone be left in it.
