Book excerpt: Quark-hadron duality addresses some of the most fundamental issues in strong interaction physics, in particular the nature of the transition from perturbative to nonperturbative QCD. In this talk I summarize recent developments in quark-hadron duality in lepton-hadron scattering, and outline how duality can be studied at future high-luminosity facilities such as the electron-ion collider. In its broadest form, quark-hadron duality postulates that physical quantities calculated in a quark-gluon basis should be identical to those evaluated in a hadronic basis. The phenomenon of duality shows up in many physical processes, such as ee− annihilation into hadrons, or semi-leptonic decays of heavy mesons. One of the more intriguing examples, initially observed some 30 years ago by Bloom and Gilman [1], is in inclusive inelastic electron-nucleon scattering.

Book excerpt: The duality between partonic and hadronic descriptions of physical phenomena is one of the most remarkable features of strong interaction physics. A classic example of this is in electron-nucleon scattering, in which low-energy cross sections, when averaged over appropriate energy intervals, are found to exhibit the scaling behavior expected from perturbative QCD. We present a comprehensive review of data on structure functions in the resonance region, from which the global and local aspects of duality are quantified, including its flavor, spin and nuclear medium dependence. To interpret the experimental findings, we discuss various theoretical approaches which have been developed to understand the microscopic origins of quark-hadron duality in QCD. Examples from other reactions are used to place duality in a broader context, and future experimental and theoretical challenges are identified.

Book excerpt: A newly-obtained data sample of inclusive electron-nucleon scattering from deuterium and hydrogen targets at Jefferson Lab has been analyzed for precision tests of quark-hadron duality. In all cases, duality appears to be a non-trivial dynamic property of the nucleon structure function. Assuming duality, the proton magnetic form factor is extracted from the inelastic data alone, and found to be in good agreement with the world's data. Higher twist contributions are found to be small on average, even down to Q^2 ~ 0 5 GeV^2. The investigation yields a scaling curve from duality arguments which resembles deep-inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data, indicating a potential sensitivity to valence and valence-like structure.

Matrix elements of twist-4 operators extracted from moments of the spin-dependent g1 structure function suggest that duality violating higher twists are small above Q2 ≈ 1 GeV2. The x dependence of local duality is analyzed within a quark model framework, and mechanisms are identified for spin-flavor symmetry breaking which underpin the behavior of structure functions at large x.

Book excerpt: Inclusive electron-nucleon scattering data from Jefferson Lab's Hall B has been analyzed to test quark-hadron duality for the polarized structure function g1(x, Q{sup 2}) over a Q{sup 2} range from 0.2 to 3.5 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2}. Incident polarized electron beam energies of 1.6 and 5.7 GeV were scattered by polarized {sup 15}NH{sub 3} and {sup 15}ND{sub 3} targets. The measurements of g1(x, Q{sup 2}) in the resonance region appear to be equivalent to a fit of g1(x, Q{sup 2}) in the deep inelastic scattering region at high Q{sup 2}. A quantitative test comparing the ratio of first moment in the resonance region to the first moment in the deep inelastic region is consistent with unity when Q{sup 2}> 2.0 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2} but substantially departs from unity when Q{sup 2}

Book excerpt: We present a phenomenological model of the quark-hadron transition in neutrino-nucleon scattering. Using recently extracted weak nucleon transition form factors, we investigate the extent to which local and global quark-hadron duality is applicable in the neutrino F1, F2 and F3 structure functions, and contrast this with duality in electron scattering. Our findings suggest that duality works relatively well for neutrino-nucleon scattering for the F2 and F3 structure functions, but not as well for F1. We also calculate the quasi-elastic, resonance and deep inelastic contributions to the Adler sum rule, and find it to be satisfied to within 10% for 0.5

Book excerpt: Using the recently published data from the BONuS(Barely Off-shell Nucleon Structure) experiment at Jefferson Lab, which utilized a spectator tagging technique to extract the inclusive electron-free neutron scattering cross section, we obtain the first direct observation of quark-hadron duality in the neutron F-2 structure function. The data are used to reconstruct the lowest few (N = 2, 4, and 6) moments of F-2 in the three prominent nucleon resonance regions, as well as the moments integrated over the entire resonance region. Comparison with moments computed from global parametrizations of parton distribution functions suggest that quark-hadron duality holds locally for the neutron in the second and third resonance regions down to Q(2) approximate to 1 GeV2, with violations possibly up to 20% observed in the first resonance region.

Book excerpt: A newly obtained data sample of inclusive electron-nucleon scattering from both hydrogen and deuterium targets is analyzed. These JLab data are in the nucleon resonance region in the four-momentum transfer range between 0.3 and 5 (GeV/c)2. The data are in agreement with SLAC data at similar kinematics, and are found to follow an average scaling curve. The inclusion of low-momentum transfer data yields a scaling curve resembling deep inelastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data, suggesting a sensitivity to the valence quarks only.
