Book A Measurement of Quark and Gluon Jet Differences at the Z Resonance

Download or read book A Measurement of Quark and Gluon Jet Differences at the Z Resonance written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have studied differences between quark and gluon jets using 3-jet events in hadronic decays of Z° bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. Gluon jets were identified in symmetric 3-jet events containing one jet tagged as a heavy quark jet and compared with a mixed sample of quark and gluon jets and also with a mixed sample of light quark (u, d and s) and gluon jets. Their preliminary results show that the particle multiplicity in gluon jets is higher than that in light quark jets. These results are in qualitative agreement with QCD expectations. Differences are also observed in particle energy spectra and the jet widths, consistent with QCD expectations.

Book Multiparticle Dynamics Proceedings Of The Xxiii International Symposium

Download or read book Multiparticle Dynamics Proceedings Of The Xxiii International Symposium written by M M Block and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-04-26 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international meeting on ultrahigh energy multiparticle phenomena started with a summary of neutrino physics, followed by a detailed review of LEP results. It moved on to the fast-breaking field of rapidity gaps, hard pomeron and small-x structure functions at both Hera and the FermiLab Tevatron. The major collider experiments at FermiLab, and in particular, the results of the top quark search were presented in complete detail. The fields of intermittency, multiplicities, correlation functions, heavy quarks, soft and semihard hadronic physics, and the particle physics aspects of cosmic rays were subjects of spirited debate.

A portion of the volume deals with facilities and instrumentation for particle astrophysics and on data acquisition.

Book Quark and Gluon Jets at CDF

Download or read book Quark and Gluon Jets at CDF written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jet shapes at (square root)s = 1.8 TeV have been measured by CDF at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The jet shape is mainly formed by parton emission before hadronization. The jet shapes may also be used to differ between quark and gluon jets. Two approaches are tried. Jet shape variables are input to a feed forward neural network trained on QCD Monte Carlos. We observe a variation of the quark content of jets as a function of jet transverse energy. The second approach consists of constructing a likelihood function, based on Monte Carlo predictions, with the Mellin moments of the momentum of charged tracks in jets. Differences are found between gluon-like jets in 2-jet events and quark-like jets in photon-jet events.

Book A Study of Quark and Gluon Jets and of the Long Distance QCD Force Field at the Z

Download or read book A Study of Quark and Gluon Jets and of the Long Distance QCD Force Field at the Z written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) is widely accepted as the correct theory of the strong nuclear force in elementary particle physics. The precision to which QCD has been tested is relatively limited, however, compared to the precision to which other interactions such as the electro-weak one have been tested. In part, this is because the large value of the QCD coupling constant, [alpha]{sub s}, renders theoretical calculations based on perturbation theory relatively imprecise. The confinement of quarks and gluons inside hadrons also leads to uncertainty because the theoretical predictions cannot, in general, be tested directly against the experimental measurements but are subject to hadronization corrections. From an experimental standpoint, it has proven difficult to isolate gluon jets inside multi-jet events in an unbiased manner so as to determine gluon jet properties using model independent methods. Basic quark-gluon interactions such as the four-jet matrix element in ee− annihilations have been relatively untested due to the lack of a data sample with sufficient statistics. Perturbation theory has essentially nothing to say about the properties of the hadronization process itself. It is for these reasons that QCD has remained relatively untested.

Book Reconstructing a Quark and Gluon Response at ATLAS

Download or read book Reconstructing a Quark and Gluon Response at ATLAS written by James Beare and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jets, collimated sprays of particles, are the most commonly produced objects in high energy subatomic collisions. Jets are the final state of colliding quarks and gluons. The fraction of a jet's energy that is measured by a calorimeter is called the response. Quark jets (jets initiated by quarks) and gluon jets (jets initiated by gluons) have a different response in the calorimeter. In this thesis the response of quark and gluon jets is reconstructed using jets in dijet and photon + jet events. To measure jet response in dijet events a method is developed to correct the energy of one jet in a dijet event so that it may be used as a reference object in the calibration procedure. The reconstructed dijet, quark and gluon responses are shown to agree with Monte Carlo simulation predictions within their uncertainties.

Book Subjet Multiplicity of Quark and Gluon Jets Reconstructed with the K Algorithm in P p Collisions

Download or read book Subjet Multiplicity of Quark and Gluon Jets Reconstructed with the K Algorithm in P p Collisions written by Robert Michael Snihur and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents some of the first experimental results of the k⊥ jet algorithm at a hadron collider. Gluon jets dominate the final state of proton-antiproton (pp¯) collisions at high center-of-mass energies ( s = 1800 GeV). Quark jets make up a significant fraction of the jet cross section only at high jet transverse momentum pT or low s . For fixed pT, we compare jets at s = 1800 GeV to s = 630 GeV, and interpret differences in terms of differing contributions from gluon and quark jets. We define jets with a successive combination algorithm based on relative transverse momenta ( k⊥ ). To study jet structure, the k⊥ algorithm is then applied within the jet to resolve subjets. We measure the number of subjets within mixed quark and gluon jet samples at s = 1800 and 630 GeV. A simple method is used to extract measurements of pure quark and gluon jet samples separately. The method requires knowledge of the relative mix of quarks and gluons in the two s samples, which we derive from Monte Carlo and a detailed detector simulation. The number of subjets emitted in gluon jets is measured to be approximately twice that in quark jets.

Book Separation of Quark and Gluon Jets in High p sub T Events

Download or read book Separation of Quark and Gluon Jets in High p sub T Events written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We suggest a procedure, based on the kinematics of qg-scattering in high-p/sub T/ events, whereby it is possible to obtain enriched samples of quark and gluon jets. At SppS energies this could be used to indicate whether quark and gluon jet fragmentation agree or not. At higher energies the application would rather be to study the differences in the parton cascades, i.e. jet substructure.
