Book excerpt: This thesis introduces a new theoretical tool to explore the notion of time and temporal order in quantum mechanics: the relativistic quantum "clock" framework. It proposes novel thought experiments showing that proper time can display quantum features, e.g. when a “clock” runs different proper times in superposition. The resulting new physical effects can be tested in near-future laboratory experiments (with atoms, molecules and photons as "clocks"). The notion of time holds the key to the regime where quantum theory and general relativity overlap, which has not been directly tested yet and remains largely unexplored by the theory. The framework also applies to scenarios in which causal relations between events become non-classical and which were previously considered impossible to address without refuting quantum theory. The relativistic quantum "clock" framework offers new insights into the foundations of quantum theory and general relativity.

Book excerpt: In this XVII Course of the International School of Cosmology and Gravitation devoted to "ADVANCES IN THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN QUANTUM AND GRAVITY PHYSICS" we have considered different aspects of the influence of gravity on quantum systems. In order to achieve this aim, in many lectures, seminars and discussions we have strengthened the interplay between gravity and quantum systems starting from the situation in the early universe based on astrophysical observations, up to the earthly based experiments with atom interferometry for probing the structure of space-time. Thus we have had timely lectures on the quantum field and horizon of a black hole including reviews of the problem of black holes thermodynamics and entropy, quantum information, quantum black holes, quantum evaporation and Hawking radiation, recent advances in stockastic gravity. We have also discussed quantum fluctuations in inflationary universe, quantum effects and reheating after inflation, and superplanckian energies in Hawking radiation. In this regard the subject of spinors in purely affine space-time and Dirac matter according to Weyl in the generalized theory of gravitation were developed . The dualism between space-time and matter has been deeply analyzed in order to see why, for general relativity, this is an obstacle for quantization of the theory. Also canonical Gravity and Mach's principle, torsion and curvature as commutator for Quantum Gravity and Dirac Geometry of real space-time were analysed, together with the problem of 5-Dimensional Projective Unified Field theory and Multidimensional Gravity and Cosmology.

Book excerpt: The theory of general relativity is based on the equivalence principle, which states that all gravitational effects vanish in any local measurement. This principle is the best-understood aspect of gravity and has been tested with high precision in classical experiments. However, there is no widely-accepted quantum theory of gravity, and the nature of the relationship between gravity and quantum mechanics is one of the most significant open problems in physics. We study the interaction of gravity with quantum systems in a light-pulse atom interferometer, which uses lasers to measure atomic positions and accelerations. The sensitivity of the interferometer is increased by utilizing large-momentum-transfer pulse sequences and a free-fall time of up to 2 s, made possible by the 10 m scale of the apparatus. The frequencies and angles of each interferometer pulse are optimized to suppress kinematic phase gradients by several orders of magnitude. We use this system to test the equivalence principle between 85Rb and 87Rb, finding no violation at the level of 10^-12 g. With a resolution of up to 1.4 x 10^-11 per shot, we demonstrate the highest relative acceleration sensitivity yet obtained in a laboratory setting. In addition, by operating the interferometer in a gradiometer configuration, we perform the first observation of a single quantum system in curved spacetime. Finally, we propose an experiment to observe gravitational time dilation with an atom interferometer.
