Book Quantum Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alastair Rae
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-26
  • ISBN : 1107394481
  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book Quantum Physics written by Alastair Rae and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum physics is believed to be the fundamental theory underlying our understanding of the physical universe. However, it is based on concepts and principles that have always been difficult to understand and controversial in their interpretation. This book aims to explain these issues using a minimum of technical language and mathematics. After a brief introduction to the ideas of quantum physics, the problems of interpretation are identified and explained. The rest of the book surveys, describes and criticises a range of suggestions that have been made with the aim of resolving these problems; these include the traditional, or 'Copenhagen' interpretation, the possible role of the conscious mind in measurement and the postulate of parallel universes. This new edition has been revised throughout to take into account developments in this field over the past fifteen years, including the idea of 'consistent histories' to which a completely new chapter is devoted.

Book Scattering Theory of Molecules Atoms and Nuclei

Download or read book Scattering Theory of Molecules Atoms and Nuclei written by Luiz Felipe Canto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to give a coherent and comprehensive account of quantum scattering theory with applications to atomic, molecular and nuclear systems. The motivation for this is to supply the necessary theoretical tools to calculate scattering observables of these many-body systems. Concepts which are seemingly different for atomic/molecular scattering from those of nuclear systems, are shown to be the same once physical units such as energy and length are diligently clarified. Many-body resonances excited in nuclear systems are the same as those in atomic systems and come under the name of Feshbach resonances. We also lean heavily on semi-classical methods to explain the physics of quantum scattering OCo especially the interference seen in the angle dependence of the cross section. Having in mind a wide readership, the book includes sections on scattering in two dimensions which is of use in surface physics. Several problems are also included at the end of each of the chapters.

Book Modern Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert L. Sproull
  • Publisher : Courier Dover Publications
  • Release : 2015-01-19
  • ISBN : 0486802264
  • Pages : 708 pages

Download or read book Modern Physics written by Robert L. Sproull and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to the concepts and methods of quantum mechanics employs the analysis of one-dimensional problems to offer students a quantitative understanding of atomic, molecular, solid-state, and nuclear physics. Applications of these concepts and methods help answer the most intriguing questions of modern physics: What holds matter together? Holds it apart? How does the variety of chemical properties of different elements arise? How do electrons move through solids? Why do nuclei that occur in nature possess only certain combinations of protons and neutrons? The text presents meaningful problems by topic — supplemented by ample illustrations, applications, and exercises — that address the most intriguing questions of modern physics. Answers to selected problems appear in the appendix. Geared toward science and engineering majors, this volume is also appropriate for independent study by those who have completed a general physics course.

Book Interaction of Atoms and Molecules with Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Interaction of Atoms and Molecules with Solid Surfaces written by V. Bortolani and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is considerable interest, both fundamental and technological, in the way atoms and molecules interact with solid surfaces. Thus the description of heterogeneous catalysis and other surface reactions requires a detailed understand ing of molecule-surface interactions. The primary aim of this volume is to provide fairly broad coverage of atoms and molecules in interaction with a variety of solid surfaces at a level suitable for graduate students and research workers in condensed matter physics, chemical physics, and materials science. The book is intended for experimental workers with interests in basic theory and concepts and had its origins in a Spring College held at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Miramare, Trieste. Valuable background reading can be found in the graduate-Ievel introduction to the physics of solid surfaces by ZangwilI(1) and in the earlier works by Garcia Moliner and F1ores(2) and Somorjai.(3) For specifically molecule-surface interac tions, additional background can be found in Rhodin and Ertl(4) and March.(S) V.
