Book Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Field Theory

Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Field Theory written by Albert Schwarz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book is very different from other books devoted to quantum field theory, both in the style of exposition and in the choice of topics. Written for both mathematicians and physicists, the author explains the theoretical formulation with a mixture of rigorous proofs and heuristic arguments; references are given for those who are looking for more details. The author is also careful to avoid ambiguous definitions and statements that can be found in some physics textbooks. In terms of topics, almost all other books are devoted to relativistic quantum field theory, conversely this book is concentrated on the material that does not depend on the assumptions of Lorentz-invariance and/or locality. It contains also a chapter discussing application of methods of quantum field theory to statistical physics, in particular to the derivation of the diagram techniques that appear in thermo-field dynamics and Keldysh formalism. It is not assumed that the reader is familiar with quantum mechanics; the book contains a short introduction to quantum mechanics for mathematicians and an appendix devoted to some mathematical facts used in the book"--Publisher's description

Book Quantum Gravity Quantum Cosmology and Lorentzian Geometries

Download or read book Quantum Gravity Quantum Cosmology and Lorentzian Geometries written by Giampiero Esposito and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at theoretical and mathematical physicists and mathematicians interested in modern gravitational physics. I have thus tried to use language familiar to readers working on classical and quantum gravity, paying attention both to difficult calculations and to existence theorems, and discussing in detail the current literature. The first aim of the book is to describe recent work on the problem of boundary conditions in one-loop quantum cosmology. The motivation of this research was to under stand whether supersymmetric theories are one-loop finite in the presence of boundaries, with application to the boundary-value problemsoccurring in quantum cosmology. Indeed, higher-loop calculations in the absence of boundaries are already available in the litera ture, showing that supergravity is not finite. I believe, however, that one-loop calculations in the presence of boundaries are more fundamental, in that they provide a more direct check of the inconsistency of supersymmetric quantum cosmology from the perturbative point of view. It therefore appears that higher-order calculations are not strictly needed, if the one-loop test already yields negative results. Even though the question is not yet settled, this research has led to many interesting, new applications of areas of theoretical and mathematical physics such as twistor theory in flat space, self-adjointness theory, the generalized Riemann zeta-function, and the theory of boundary counterterms in super gravity. I have also compared in detail my work with results by other authors, explaining, whenever possible, the origin of different results, the limits of my work and the unsolved problems.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-02-15
  • ISBN : 3642142702
  • Pages : 161 pages

Download or read book The Pursuit of Quantum Gravity written by Cécile DeWitt-Morette and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1946 is the year Bryce DeWitt entered Harvard graduate school. Quantum Gravity was his goal and remained his goal throughout his lifetime until the very end. The pursuit of Quantum Gravity requires a profound understanding of Quantum Physics and Gravitation Physics. As G. A. Vilkovisky commented , "Quantum Gravity is a combination of two words, and one should know both. Bryce understood this as nobody else, and this wisdom is completely unknown to many authors of the flux of papers that we see nowadays." Distingished physicist Cecile DeWitt-Morette skillfully blends her personal and scientific account with a wealth of her late husband's often unpublished writings on the subject matter. This volume, through the perspective of the leading researcher on quantum gravity of his generation, will provide an invaluable source of reference for anyone working in the field.

Book The Many Faces of the Superworld

Download or read book The Many Faces of the Superworld written by Yuri Golfand and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable volume is dedicated to the memory of Yuri Golfand, one of the discoverers of supersymmetry. Together with his student, he constructed in 1970 the superextension of the Poincar‚ algebra and obtained the first four-dimensional supersymmetric field theory, a version of supersymmetric QED. Golfand died in 1994 in Israel.Did the pioneers of supersymmetry ? Neveu, Schwarz, Ramond, Golfand, Volkov, Wess, Zumino and others ? foresee in the early 1970's that they would be opening to us the gates of the superworld? The superworld will become one of the most important components of our understanding of Nature ? a component that will stay with us forever. This book is a compilation of the original papers and review articles, devoted to various aspects of supersymmetry, written by the outstanding researchers in the field, theorists whose work shaped the present day theory and continues to make a profound impact on the frontier directions of the current development. A wide range of topics is covered ? from subtle results in the superstring theory to supersymmetry-based phenomenology. Most of the articles have been prepared specifically for this volume. The first part of the book consists of the Editor's essay presenting the basic stages of Golfand's life and work, the memoirs of his widow, Mrs N Koretz-Golfand and of his student, Dr E Likhtman. Also included is the article of Prof. M Marinov ?Revealing the Path to the Superworld?, outlining the main ideas that paved the way to the discovery of supersymmetry. The historical part of the book concludes with the English translation of the Golfand-Likhtman paper on supersymmetry published in 1972 in the Tamm Memorial Volume.

The third part is a collection of articles that provide a personal view of the author, describing his personal views and recollections on a range of wider topics. Taken together, this collection of articles creates an enjoyable review of physics, its philosophy, and key players in its modern development in the 20th Century. Undoubtedly, it will be an enjoyable read for professional physicists and non-scientists alike.

Download or read book The Superworld II written by Antonino Zichichi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During A:.lgust 1987. a group of 76 physicists from 51 laboratories in 22 countries met in Erice for the 25th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented were: Austria. Bulgaria. Canada. Chile. China. Colombia. Czechoslovakia. France. Federal Republic of Germany. Greece. Hungary. India. Italy. Lebanon. The Netherlands. Poland. Portugal. Spain. Sweden. Switzerland. United Kingdom. and the United States of America. The School was sponsored by the European Physical Society (EPS). the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI). the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRSI). the Sicilian Regional Government (ERS). and the Weizmann Institute of Science. This is the 25th anniversary of the School and. for the second time. the programme has been mainly devoted to the Superworld. Needless to say that the Superworld appears to be. at present. very far from the experimental axis. Nevertheless. the Superworld is a fascinating field of modern physics: we ought to know what boils in the heads of our theoretical colleagues. keeping in mind that the source of basic truth is. and will remain. experimental physics. Relevant news in experimental physics was scarce in the past year and the most interesting results have been reported. The future has also been presented with LEP. Gran Sasso. HERA: projects to become operative by 1000; and ELOISATRON as the driving force for Europe to keep a central role in Subnuclear Physics.
