Book Introduction to Quantum Electronics

Download or read book Introduction to Quantum Electronics written by H. G. Unger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Quantum Electronics is based on a one-semester lecture of electrical engineering for German students. The book is an introduction to the fundamentals of lasers and masers and a presentation of the principles of physics, their theory, and methods of analysis that seek to analyze, explain, and quantify related important phenomena. The properties of a laser is then discussed, the author comparing it to the properties of the maser. Although masers are based on the same physical properties as that of the lasers, masers amplify microwaves by induced emission. How the laser is amplified, its power and frequency of oscillation, and which media are suitable for lasers are analyzed. Descriptions of the laser take more emphasis as it is considered to have more technical applications than the maser. An example given is the operation of the gas laser, because it exhibits coherence in time and space, considered as the most important quality of laser beams. Physicists, students, and academicians in the field of electrical engineering and quantum electronics will find that this book addresses many of their interests.

Book excerpt: Quantum electronics as an independent field of physics came into prominence in the middle of the fifties when the first quantum oscillators and amplifiers were made. This field at once attracted the attention of a large number of research workers, and rapid progress took place. The present book attempts to give a resume of this material and to a certain extent, to generalize it. The material has been arranged as such that the reader need not continually refer elsewhere. In Volume 1, the authors gave the basic theory of quantum electronics. In this part, they have tried to show how the concepts and equations used in quantum electronics follow from the basic principles of theoretical physics. When doing this, they made frequent use of very simple models so as not to complicate the treatment. Research on the subject has of course continued since the publication of this book. The material covered in this edition, however, will form a solid foundation for anyone with an academic interest in the field of quantum electronics.

Book excerpt: Quantum Electronics, Volume 2: Maser Amplifiers and Oscillators deals with the experimental and theoretical aspects of maser amplifiers and oscillators which are based on the principles of quantum electronics. It shows how the concepts and equations used in quantum electronics follow from the basic principles of theoretical physics. Comprised of three chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the elements of the theory of quantum oscillators and amplifiers working in the microwave region, along with the practical achievements in this field. Attention is paid to two-level paramagnetic masers and the dependence of the form of the emitted signal on the different parameters. The maser oscillator operating with a beam of active molecules is described in the next chapter, which considers the three-level paramagnetic oscillator, the molecular beam oscillator, and the two-level solid-state quantum oscillator. The final chapter is devoted to lasers, including gas lasers and solid-state lasers. Methods of obtaining negative temperatures are described, together with the elements of laser theory and the kinetics of oscillation processes in solid-state lasers. This book is intended for university students with knowledge of theoretical physics, particularly quantum mechanics.

Book Beam The Race to Make the Laser

Download or read book Beam The Race to Make the Laser written by Jeff Hecht and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, Charles Townes invented the laser's microwave cousin, the maser. The next logical step was to extend the same physical principles to the shorter wavelengths of light, but the idea did not catch fire until October 1957, when Townes asked Gordon Gould about Gould's research on using light to excite thallium atoms. Each took the idea and ran with it. The independent-minded Gould sought the fortune of an independent inventor; the professorial Townes sought the fame of scientific recognition. Townes enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Arthur Schawlow, and got Bell Labs into the race. Gould turned his ideas into a patent application and a million-dollar defense contract. They soon had company. Ali Javan, one of Townes's former students, began pulling 90-hour weeks at Bell Labs with colleague Bill Bennett. And far away in California a bright young physicist named Ted Maiman became a very dark horse in the race. While Schawlow proclaimed that ruby could never make a laser, Maiman slowly convinced himself it would. As others struggled with recalcitrant equipment and military secrecy, Maiman built a tiny and elegant device that fit in the palm of his hand. His ruby laser worked the first time he tried it, on May 16, 1960, but afterwards he had to battle for acceptance as the man who made the first laser. Beam is a fascinating tale of a remarkable and powerful invention that has become a symbol of modern technology.

Book Handbook of Lasers

Download or read book Handbook of Lasers written by Marvin J. Weber and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 1224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers continue to be an amazingly robust field of activity. Anyone seeking a photon source is now confronted with an enormous number of possible lasers and laser wavelengths to choose from, but no single, comprehensive source to help them make that choice. The Handbook of Lasers provides an authoritative compilation of lasers, their properties, and original references in a readily accessible form. Organized by lasing media-solids, liquids, and gases-each section is subdivided into distinct laser types. Each type carries a brief description, followed by tables listing the lasing element or medium, host, lasing transition and wavelength, operating properties, primary literature citations, and, for broadband lasers, reported tuning ranges. The importance and value of the Handbook of Lasers cannot be overstated. Serving as both an archive and as an indicator of emerging trends, it reflects the state of knowledge and development in the field, provides a rapid means of obtaining reference data, and offers a pathway to the literature. It contains data useful for comparison with predictions and for developing models of processes, and may reveal fundamental inconsistencies or conflicts in the data.

Download or read book Laser Theory written by Hermann Haken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by one of the pioneers of laser theory, is now considered a classic by many laser physicists. Originally published in the prestigious Encyclopedia of Physics series, it is now being republished in paperback to make it available not only to professors and scientists, but also to students. It presents a thorough treatment of the theory of laser resonators, the quantum theory of coherence, and the quantization of electromagnetic fields. Especial emphasis is placed on the quantum-mechanical treatment of laser light by means of quantum-mechanical Langevin equations, the density matrix equation, and the Fokker-Planck equation. The semiclassical approach and the rate equa tion approach are also presented. The principles underlying these approaches are used to derive the relevant equations, from which, in turn, the various properties of laser light are derived. Preface. The concept of the laser came into existence more than a decade ago when SCHAWLOW and TOWNES showed that the maser principle could be extended to the optical region. Since then this field has developed at an incredible pace which hardly anybody could have foreseen. The laser turned out to be a meeting place for such different disciplines as optics (e. g. spectroscopy). optical pumping, radio engineering, solid state physics, gas discharge physics and many other fields. The underlying structure of the laser theory is rather simple.
