This is a complex subject, and it is di?cult to illustrate it in all its aspects within a normal undergraduate course in particle physics, while devoting a su?cient attention to phenomenological aspects. However, in the small-wavelength limit, the semi-classical approximation is, in many cases of practical relevance, accurate enough to provide reliable predictions without entering the technicalities connected with radiative corrections. In particular, in the framework of the semi-classical approximation it is possible to obtain, in alimited number of pages,the expressionsfor relativisticcrosssections and decay rates in a self-contained and rigorous presentation, starting from the basic principles of Quantum Mechanics. Furthermore, even in the case of the standard model of Electroweak Interactions, the construction of the theory in the semi-classical approximation is exhausted by the study of the classical Lagrangian; many di?cult problems, such as those related to the unphysical content of gauge theories, can be dealt with by means of simple prescriptions. Thesearethereasonsthathavedeterminedourchoicetobasetheselecture notes on the semi-classicalapproximationto relativisticquantum ?eld theory. Webelievethatthisapproachleadstoadescriptionofthemostrelevantph- ical processes in high-energy physics, which is adequate to an undergraduate level course on fundamental interactions. Ofcourse,the lackof controlonradiativecorrectionshassomedrawbacks: forexample,theroleofanomalies,andthelimitationstotheHiggsmechanism, cannot be discussed in this context. There are several general purpose mathematics packages available to physicists, including Mathematica, Maple, and REDUCE. Each has advantages and disadvantages, but REDUCE has been found to be both powerful and convenient in solving a wide range of problems. This book introduces the reader to REDUCE and demonstrates its utility as a mathematical tool in physics. The first chapter of the book describes the REDUCE system, including some library packages. The following chapters show the use of REDUCE in examples from classical mechanics, hydrodynamics, general relativity and quantum mechanics. The rest of the book systematically presents the Standard Model of particle physics (QED, weak interactions, QCD). A large number of scattering and decay processes are calculated with REDUCE. All example programs from the book can be downloaded via Internet, from http://www.inp.nsk.su/~grozin/book/. The emphasis throughout is on learning through worked examples.

One of the Working Group's primary goals was to study the phenomenology of electroweak symmetry breaking and attempt to quantify the “physics reach” of present and future colliders. Their investigations encompassed the Standard Model — with one doublet of Higgs scalars — and approaches to physics beyond the Standard Model. These include models of low-energy supersymmetry, dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, and a variety of extensions of the Standard Model with new particles and interactions. Invited to the symposium were around 40 globally leading researchers in the field of neutrino physics, both experimental and theoretical.The dominant theme of the lectures was neutrino oscillations, which after several years were recently verified by results from the Super-Kamiokande detector in Kamioka, Japan and the SNO detector in Sudbury, Canada. Discussion focused especially on effects of neutrino oscillations derived from the presence of matter and the fact that three different neutrinos exist. Since neutrino oscillations imply that neutrinos have mass, this is the first experimental observation that fundamentally deviates from the standard model of particle physics. This is a challenge to both theoretical and experimental physics. The various oscillation parameters will be determined with increased precision in new, specially designed experiments. Theoretical physics is working intensively to insert the knowledge that neutrinos have mass into the theoretical models that describe particle physics. The lectures provided a very good description of the intensive situation in the field right now. The topics discussed also included mass models for neutrinos, neutrinos in extra dimensions as well as the “seesaw mechanism,” which provides a good description of why neutrino masses are so small.This book is A4 size and in full color.
