Book Sequential Quantum Dot Cellular Automata Design and Analysis Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks

Download or read book Sequential Quantum Dot Cellular Automata Design and Analysis Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks written by Praveen Venkataramani and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The increasing need for low power and stunningly fast devices in Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor Very large Scale Integration (CMOS VLSI) circuits, directs the stream towards scaling of the same. However scaling at sub-micro level and nano level pose quantum mechanical effects and thereby limits further scaling of CMOS circuits. Researchers look into new aspects in nano regime that could effectively resolve this quandary. One such technology that looks promising at nano-level is the quantum dot cellular automata (QCA). The basic operation of QCA is based on transfer of charge rather than the electrons itself. The wave nature of these electrons and their uncertainty in device operation demands a probabilistic approach to study their operation. The data is assigned to a QCA cell by positioning two electrons into four quantum dots. However the site in which the electrons settles is uncertain and depends on various factors. In an ideal state, the electrons position themselves diagonal to each other, through columbic repulsion, to a low energy state. The quantum cell is said to be polarized to +1 or -1, based on the alignment of the electrons. In this thesis, we put forth a probabilistic model to design sequential QCA in Bayesian networks. The timing constraints inherent in sequential circuits due to the feedback path, makes it difficult to assign clock zones in a way that the outputs arrive at the same time instant. Hence designing circuits that have many sequential elements is time consuming. The model presented in this paper is fast and could be used to design sequential QCA circuits without the need to align the clock zones. One of the major advantages of our model lies in its ability to accurately capture the polarization of each cell of the sequential QCA circuits. We discuss the architecture of some of the basic sequential circuits such as J-K flip flop (FF), RAM memory cell and s27 benchmark circuit designed in QCADesigner. We analyze the circuits using a state-of-art Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN). To our knowledge this is the first time sequential circuits are analyzed using DBN. For the first time, Estimated Posterior Importance Sampling Algorithm (EPIS) is used to determine the probabilistic values, to study the effect due to variations in physical dimension and operating temperature on output polarization in QCA circuits.

Book Design of Arithmetic Circuits in Quantum Dot Cellular Automata Nanotechnology

Download or read book Design of Arithmetic Circuits in Quantum Dot Cellular Automata Nanotechnology written by K. Sridharan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph focuses on the design of arithmetic circuits in Quantum Dot Cellular Automata (QCA). Using the fact that the 3-input majority gate is a primitive in QCA, the book sets out to discover hitherto unknown properties of majority logic in the context of arithmetic circuit designs. The pursuit for efficient adders in QCA takes two forms. One involves application of the new results in majority logic to existing adders. The second involves development of a custom adder for QCA technology. A QCA adder named as hybrid adder is proposed and it is shown that it outperforms existing multi-bit adders with respect to area and delay. The work is extended to the design of a low-complexity multiplier for signed numbers in QCA. Furthermore the book explores two aspects unique to QCA technology, namely thermal robustness and the role of interconnects. In addition, the book introduces the reader to QCA layout design and simulation using QCADesigner. Features & Benefits: This research-based book: ·Introduces the reader to Quantum Dot Cellular Automata, an emerging nanotechnology. ·Explores properties of majority logic. ·Demonstrates application of the properties to design efficient arithmetic circuits. ·Guides the reader towards layout design and simulation in QCADesigner.

Book Logic Realization Using Regular Structures in Quantum dot Cellular Automata QCA

Download or read book Logic Realization Using Regular Structures in Quantum dot Cellular Automata QCA written by Rahul Singhal and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor industry seems to approach a wall where physical geometry and power density issues could possibly render the device fabrication infeasible. Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) is a new nanotechnology that claims to offer the potential of manufacturing even denser integrated circuits, which can operate at high frequencies and low power consumption. In QCA technology, the signal propagation occurs as a result of electrostatic interaction among the electrons as opposed to flow to the electrons in a wire. The basic building block of QCA technology is a QCA cell which encodes binary information with the relative position of electrons in it. A QCA cell can be used either as a wire or as logic. In QCA, the directionality of the signal flow is controlled by phase-shifted electric field generated on a separate layer than QCA cell layer. This process is called clocking of QCA circuits. The logic realization using regular structures such as PLAs have played a significant role in the semiconductor field due to their manufacturability, behavioral predictability and the ease of logic mapping. Along with these benefits, regular structures in QCA's would allow for uniform QCA clocking structure. The clocking structure is important because the pioneers of QCA technology propose it to be fabricated in CMOS technology. This thesis presents a detailed design implementation and a comparative analysis of logic realization using regular structures, namely Shannon-Lattices and PLAs for QCAs. A software tool was developed as a part of this research, which automatically generates complete QCA-Shannon-Lattice and QCA-PLA layouts for single-output Boolean functions based on an input macro-cell library. The equations for latency and throughput for the new QCA-PLA and QCA-Shannon-Lattice design implementations were also formulated. The correctness of the equations was verified by performing simulations of the tool-generate layouts with QCADesigner. A brief design trade-off analysis between the tool-generated regular structure implementation and the unstructured custom layout in QCA is presented for the full-adder circuit.

Book Adder and Multiplier Design and Analysis in Quantum dot Cellular Automata

Download or read book Adder and Multiplier Design and Analysis in Quantum dot Cellular Automata written by Heumpil Cho and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum-dot cellular automata (QCA) is an emerging nanotechnology for electronic circuits. Its advantages such as faster speed, smaller size, and lower power consumption are very attractive. The fundamental device, a quantum-dot cell, can be used to make gates, wires, and memories. As such it is the basic building block of nanotechnology circuits. While the physical nature of the nanoscale materials is complicated, the circuit designer can concentrate on the logical and structural design, so the design effort is reduced. Because of its novelty, the current literature shows only simple circuit structures. This research broadens the QCA circuit designs with larger circuits, explores the characteristics of QCA circuit designs, and shows analysis based on those design results. This dissertation proposes three kinds of adder designs in QCA from the conventional adder design approaches. Ripple carry adders, carry lookahead adders, and conditional sum adders are designed for optimization with QCA technology and simulated with several different operand sizes. Using the newly discovered knowledge of the QCA circuit characteristics, new designs for serial adders and multipliers are presented, which are the carry flow adder and the serial multiplier. The carry flow adder design is compared with the previous three adder designs. From the filter design methodology, the carry shift multiplication and the carry delay multiplication algorithms are proposed. The serial multipliers are implemented with both algorithms. The final designs are compared according to the complexity, area, and delay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling and simulation are disciplines of major importance for science and engineering. There is no science without models, and simulation has nowadays become a very useful tool, sometimes unavoidable, for development of both science and engineering. The main attractive feature of cellular automata is that, in spite of their conceptual simplicity which allows an easiness of implementation for computer simulation, as a detailed and complete mathematical analysis in principle, they are able to exhibit a wide variety of amazingly complex behaviour. This feature of cellular automata has attracted the researchers' attention from a wide variety of divergent fields of the exact disciplines of science and engineering, but also of the social sciences, and sometimes beyond. The collective complex behaviour of numerous systems, which emerge from the interaction of a multitude of simple individuals, is being conveniently modelled and simulated with cellular automata for very different purposes. In this book, a number of innovative applications of cellular automata models in the fields of Quantum Computing, Materials Science, Cryptography and Coding, and Robotics and Image Processing are presented.
