Book Quantitative High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy

Download or read book Quantitative High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy written by Tong Zheng and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) has been extensively used as a structure characterization technique in materials and biological science. In the past, qualitative use of HRTEM has been primarily employed. This thesis explores the use of HRTEM as a quantitative tool, which should have great impact on the atomic level analysis of numerous materials science problems, such as interface interdiffusion in heterostructures. In order to implement quantitative HRTEM, a clear understanding of the electron imaging and scattering theories is necessary. Moreover, several issues which directly relate to the success of high resolution electron microscopy work, such as the characteristics of a microscope and the specimen preparation, will be addressed. As an example, the application of HRTEM to a materials science problem will be demonstrated. Through this study, limitations of the qualitative HRTEM will be manifested and the quantitative HRTEM based on a non-linear least-square method will follow. This quantitative method allows determination of the imaging parameters and hence, the quantitative structure and chemical analysis can then be carried on. However, the inadequacy of the existing theory in quantitative matching of experimental images will be demonstrated, and further theoretical developments are required to implement the method.

Book excerpt: This new fourth edition of the standard text on atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM) retains previous material on the fundamentals of electron optics and aberration correction, linear imaging theory (including wave aberrations to fifth order) with partial coherence, and multiple-scattering theory. Also preserved are updated earlier sections on practical methods, with detailed step-by-step accounts of the procedures needed to obtain the highest quality images of atoms and molecules using a modern TEM or STEM electron microscope. Applications sections have been updated - these include the semiconductor industry, superconductor research, solid state chemistry and nanoscience, and metallurgy, mineralogy, condensed matter physics, materials science and material on cryo-electron microscopy for structural biology. New or expanded sections have been added on electron holography, aberration correction, field-emission guns, imaging filters, super-resolution methods, Ptychography, Ronchigrams, tomography, image quantification and simulation, radiation damage, the measurement of electron-optical parameters, and detectors (CCD cameras, Image plates and direct-injection solid state detectors). The theory of Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and Z-contrast are treated comprehensively. Chapters are devoted to associated techniques, such as energy-loss spectroscopy, Alchemi, nanodiffraction, environmental TEM, twisty beams for magnetic imaging, and cathodoluminescence. Sources of software for image interpretation and electron-optical design are given.

Download or read book Advances in Materials Problem Solving with the Electron Microscope written by Jim Bentley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was motivated by the remarkable advances that continue to be made in electron microscope instrumentation and techniques for applications to materials science. Advances include quantitative high-resolution imaging, atomic-resolution Z-contrast imaging, elemental mapping by energy-filtered TEM or spectrum imaging, atomic resolution EELS for composition and bonding, quantitative CBED, site- occupancy determination by ALCHEMI, electron holography, EBSP in the SEM for phase identification and orientation imaging microscopy, low-voltage microanalysis of bulk specimens, and in situ experiments of dynamic phenomena. The book emphasizes how these recent developments in electron microscopy are being used to solve materials problems. It features different groups of materials or microstructural components rather than electron microscope techniques or instrumentation. Papers focus on low-energy electron microscopy of surfaces, crystallography, defects, specimen preparation, and interfaces in metals and ceramics. Technological applications include magnetic materials, microelectronic materials, partially ordered and nanophase materials, polymers, ceramics, metallic alloys, concrete, biomaterials, and glasses.

  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 1848163908
  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book 4D Electron Microscopy written by Ahmed H. Zewail and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural phase transitions, mechanical deformations, and the embryonic stages of melting and crystallization are examples of phenomena that can now be imaged in unprecedented structural detail with high spatial resolution, and ten orders of magnitude as fast as hitherto. No monograph in existence attempts to cover the revolutionary dimensions that EM in its various modes of operation nowadays makes possible. The authors of this book chart these developments, and also compare the merits of coherent electron waves with those of synchrotron radiation. They judge it prudent to recall some important basic procedural and theoretical aspects of imaging and diffraction so that the reader may better comprehend the significance of the new vistas and applications now afoot. This book is not a vade mecum - numerous other texts are available for the practitioner for that purpose.
