Book excerpt: A review is presented of the methods developed at the Savansah River Laboratory and elsewhere for quantitative correlation of irradiation growth with preferred orientation inuranium, with preferred orientation characterized by x- nay and dilatometric techniques. In an application of the methods, it is shown that a strongly oriented uranium plate, clud in aluminum, was much more stable in dimen- . sions than would be expected from the observed dimensional behavior of either unrestrained single crystals of uranium or aluruinum-clad polycrystalline rod. The greater stability of the plate is attributed to a relatively strong claiding and other restraing effects. (auth).

Book excerpt: An investigation was made to determine the effect of rolling temperature, roll pass design, amount of reduction, and heat treatment before and after rolling on the anisotropic growth rate of uranium under irradiation. The growth rate was found to increase with decreasing rolling temperature and with increasing reduction of area at 300 deg C. The rate of elongation was proportional to the amount of (010) component present or, where shortening occurred, to the amount of (100) component. Oval-edge-oval roll passes resulted in somewhat higher irradiation growth rates than did round roll passes. Recrystallization after rolling effectively reduced the irradiation growth rate of uranium rolled at temperatures of 500 deg C and lower. Irradiation caused length shortening in uranium which was beta quenched after being round-rolled at temperatures of 400 deg C and above, and which was beta quenched after being oval- rolled at temperatures of 300 deg C and above.

Cahn from the observed slip and twin systems reported in M/R-740. These relations are used in conjunction with a development of the model proposed by Wyatt and described in M/R-772 to provide a theory of the mechanism of growth of alpha uranium under irradiation. The growth behavior of rods having various types of preferred orientation can be deduced from this theory, which also explains why growth is observed in the direction of high tensile yield stress. The theory predicts absence of growth in uranium irradiated at temperatures above those at which deformation occurs by twinning, and has been used by Jones to predict the role of alloying additions in preventing irradiation damage.
