Book Comparison of Qualitative and Quantitative Research

Download or read book Comparison of Qualitative and Quantitative Research written by Andreas Ernst and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 2 (B), University of St. Gallen (Research Methods), language: English, abstract: As well in theory as both in the practicable reality the question arises repeatedly about the more convenient research method – the so-called method conflict between quantitative and qualitative research (Iberer 1). To go into this discussion and finally draw a conclusion I first define and compare both research methods and as a next step question its purposes. To get a better understanding for both research methods I limit my considerations to a clear distinction and do not go into the question of combining the two. “Quantitative research methods were originally developed in natural sciences to study natural phenomena” (Myers, Overview of qualitative research). It’s aim is to capture relevant facts [...] and explain them causally with empirical – analytical methods (Iberer 1). “Qualitative research methods [on the other hand] were developed in the social sciences to enable researchers to study social and cultural phenomena” (Myers, Overview of qualitative research). This method tries to clarify the basic issue of how subjects interpret and see the world, why and how they act and in which form changes take place (Iberer 1). After this rough overview I cope with the issue in more detail by opposing one research method to the other.

Book Original Data Collection and Analysis

Download or read book Original Data Collection and Analysis written by Laura Merrifield Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State comparisons can provide rich analysis for understanding state differences and the impact these have on campaigns, particularly at the state level. Yet often the data necessary to provide a full and robust quantitative analysis cannot be located in one universal source and instead come from many resources, each using slightly different methods and metrics. Gathering secondary data that employ different observed units (data on the county level, the state level, and state legislative district level, for example) is only the first task; coding it to ensure both accuracy and proper application can prove to be a tedious methodological challenge. This case study focuses on the challenges of multi-state, multi-source data collection for an original dataset and analysis for quantitative resource, specifically in campaign finance. In addition, it offers helpful guidelines and recommendations for those pursuing research that involves creating a unique data set with different units of observation from the initial sources.

Book Analysing Quantitative Data

Download or read book Analysing Quantitative Data written by Raymond A Kent and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative book provides a fresh take on quantitative data analysis within the social sciences. It presents variable-based and case-based approaches side-by-side encouraging you to learn a range of approaches and to understand which is the most appropriate for your research. Using two multidisciplinary non-experimental datasets throughout, the book demonstrates that data analysis is really an active dialogue between ideas and evidence. Each dataset is returned to throughout the chapters enabling you to see the role of the researcher in action; it also showcases the difference between each approach and the significance of researchers’ decisions that must be made as you move through your analysis. The book is divided into four clear sections: Data and their presentation Variable-based analyses Case-based analyses Comparing and combining approaches Clear, original and written for students this book should be compulsory reading for anyone looking to conduct non-experimental quantitative data analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an intro-level text that teaches how to think clearly and conceptually about quantitative information, emphasizing ideas over technicality and assuming no prior exposure to data analysis, statistics, or quantitative methods. The books four parts present the foundation for quantiative reasoning: correlation and causation; statistical relationships; causal phenomena; and incorporating quantitative information into decision making. Within these parts it covers the array of tools used by social scientists, including regression, inference, experiments, research design, and more, all by explaining the rationale and logic behind such tools rather than focusing only on the technical calculations used for each. New concepts are presented simply, with the help of copious examples, and the books leans towards graphic rather than mathematical representation of data, with any technical material included in appendices"--

Book Data Analysis

  • Author : Charles M. Judd
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2011-03-15
  • ISBN : 1136874097
  • Pages : 465 pages

Download or read book Data Analysis written by Charles M. Judd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely rewritten classic text features many new examples, insights and topics including mediational, categorical, and multilevel models. Substantially reorganized, this edition provides a briefer, more streamlined examination of data analysis. Noted for its model-comparison approach and unified framework based on the general linear model, the book provides readers with a greater understanding of a variety of statistical procedures. This consistent framework, including consistent vocabulary and notation, is used throughout to develop fewer but more powerful model building techniques. The authors show how all analysis of variance and multiple regression can be accomplished within this framework. The model-comparison approach provides several benefits: It strengthens the intuitive understanding of the material thereby increasing the ability to successfully analyze data in the future It provides more control in the analysis of data so that readers can apply the techniques to a broader spectrum of questions It reduces the number of statistical techniques that must be memorized It teaches readers how to become data analysts instead of statisticians. The book opens with an overview of data analysis. All the necessary concepts for statistical inference used throughout the book are introduced in Chapters 2 through 4. The remainder of the book builds on these models. Chapters 5 - 7 focus on regression analysis, followed by analysis of variance (ANOVA), mediational analyses, non-independent or correlated errors, including multilevel modeling, and outliers and error violations. The book is appreciated by all for its detailed treatment of ANOVA, multiple regression, nonindependent observations, interactive and nonlinear models of data, and its guidance for treating outliers and other problematic aspects of data analysis. Intended for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on data analysis, statistics, and/or quantitative methods taught in psychology, education, or other behavioral and social science departments, this book also appeals to researchers who analyze data. A protected website featuring additional examples and problems with data sets, lecture notes, PowerPoint presentations, and class-tested exam questions is available to adopters. This material uses SAS but can easily be adapted to other programs. A working knowledge of basic algebra and any multiple regression program is assumed.
