Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Analysis by Electrolysis: Revised English Translation of the Fifth German Edition It is necessary, therefore, to find out, on the basis of the theory of electricity, what happens when an electric current is passed through any given solution. If the wires from the positive and negative poles of a suitable source of current are each connected with separate pieces of plati num foil and the two pieces of foil are suspended a slight distance apart in a sugar solution or in chloroform, it will be found, by plac ing a galvanoscope or ammeter in the circuit between one of the poles and the wire that leads to the liquid, that only a very weak electric current is flowing. If, however, the pieces of platinum foil, called the electrodes, are suspended in dilute sulphuric acid, in dilute caustic soda, or in a solution of sodium chloride, the instrument Will then Show the passage of a stronger electric current. The solutions of these substances conduct electricity. On the basis of their behavior toward the current, all soluble substances (and with these only shall we concern ourselves) can be divided into those which are good conductors and those which are not. Those substances which, in aqueous solution, conduct electricity are called electrolytes; to this class belong most acids, most bases, and nearly all salts, whether organic or inorganic in nature, and it is With these that electro-analysis is concerned. Book Electro Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electro Analysis Classic Reprint written by Edgar Fahs Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro-Analysis It appeared advisable to omit from this edition the several sections relating to the various sources of the current, particularly those in which the older forms of battery were described. It is true that the use of these sources of electric energy will probably continue, but their construction, treatment and efficiency are so well understood that any particular information about them is best obtained from publications devoted especially to them. The greater portion of the new material, presented in the pages which follow, refers to the rapid precipitation and separation of metals, the use of a mercury cathode with rotating anode and the employment of a new cell in the determination of cations and anions. To give this material the space it so abundantly deserves suggested the elimination of the minute directions found in the various electrolytes used with stationary electrodes, but it developed that beginners in electro-analysis learn much from the execution of details, the handling of deposits and other points which arise constantly in work of this character. Further, there will always be persons who, from preference or from the lack of facilities to carry out the newer methods, will make determinations and separations with stationary electrodes. Indeed, these earlier methods constitute a fundamental step in the development of analysis through the agency of the current, and are therefore retained in their original forms, except where experience has recommended alterations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro-Chemical Analysis, Vol. 1 The larger texts devoted to analysis have omitted electrolysis from their pages, thus rendering its special treatment necessary and desirable. The plan adopted in the following pages in present ing this subject has been to give a brief introduction upon the behavior of the current toward the different acids and salts, a short description Of the various sources of the electric energy; its control and measure ment; after which follow a condensed history Of the introduction of the current into chemical analysis, and sections relating to the determination and separation of metals, as well as the oxidations possible by means Of the electric agent. Book Quantitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Quantitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by Alexander Classen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Chemical Analysis The present edition, revised with the assistance of Dr. Lob, differs from the previous editions in that tho Introduction has been augmented by the insertion of a section devoted to theory. This was made the more necessary, since the investigations of recent years have been chiefly devoted to the explanation of the reactions in solutions, and the determination of the electrical magnitudes. The necessity of specific directions concerning electrode tension, current strength and decomposition tension has been demonstrated. The author, with the co-operation of his assistants, has experimentally determined these electrical magnitudes, not only for his own methods for the determination and separation of the metals, but also for a number of other methods, and has incorporated them in the text. Additional methods by other authors, in which directions concerning these important factors are wanting, have been omitted, in consideration of the fact that these are either uncertain or entirely impractical; mention of them has, however, been made in the references to the literature. The book has been made more complete by the description of various measuring instruments, sources of current and apparatus; together with an explanation of simple and complete appliances for carrying out electrolytic experiments. These have been illustrated by a large number of new cuts, in the text and in the appended tables. The publishers have spared neither pains nor expense to make these new illustrations as perfect as possible; I feel called upon to express here my full appreciation of this fact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro-Chemical Analysis, Vol. 1 In preparing this little volume the author has had constantly in view the needs of a large class of students of analytical chemistry desirous of becoming acquainted with the methods of quantitative analysis by electrolysis; these are daily acquiring greater importance, and being introduced and applied wherever possible. The larger texts devoted to analysis have omitted electrolysis from their pages, thus rendering its special treatment necessary and desirable. The plan adopted in the following pages in presenting this subject has been to give a brief introduction upon the behavior of the current toward the different acids and salts, a short description of the various sources of the electric energy; its control and measurement; after which follow a condensed history of the introduction of the current into chemical analysis, and sections relating to the determination and separation of metals, as well as the oxidations possible by means of the electric agent.
