Book Quantitative Aspects of Industrial Use of Electricity Under Time of use Rates in France England and Wales

Download or read book Quantitative Aspects of Industrial Use of Electricity Under Time of use Rates in France England and Wales written by Jan Paul Acton and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the responses of time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates by large industrial and commercial customers in France, England, and Wales. The report analyzes quantitatively the daily and seasonal patterns of electricity use for a sample of customers who have faced TOU rates for 10 to 20 years. Some of the conclusions drawn are: TOU prices have an effect on customers' loads by almost any measure applied; industry-specific patterns of adjustment appear to be consistent with the industrial processes involved; and firms possessing self-generating capability make added adjustments in their daily loads by reducing peak and shoulder period use and increasing off-period electricity consumption. Two major policy implications for the United States are suggested: First, although on average there is clear evidence of response to TOU rates, considerable variability remains from firm to firm and from industry to industry. Second, offering optional rates allows a firm to select the most advantageous rate for the pattern of consumption the firm is willing to achieve.

Book Demand Side Management and Electricity End Use Efficiency

Download or read book Demand Side Management and Electricity End Use Efficiency written by A. de Almeida and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Demand-Side Management and Electricity End-Use Efficiency" was held in order to present and to discuss some of the most recent developments in demand-side electric power management and planning methodologies as well as research progress in relevant end-use technologies. Electricity is assuming an increasingly important role in buildings and industry, due to its flexibility, efficiency of conversion and cleanliness at the point of use. However the production and transmission of electricity requires huge investments and may have undesirable environmental impacts. The recent nuclear accident in Chernobyl and the damage caused by acid precipitation are creating increasing concerns about the impacts of power plants. Some environmental problems are local or regional, others such as global warming can affect the whole world. Although environmental impacts may be minimized with additional investments, electricity generation will become even more capital intensive. Energy, and electricity in particular, is not directly consumed by people. To achieve improved standards of living, what is important is. the level of production of goods and services. If it is possible to produce the same quantity of goods and services with less electricity and in a cost-effective way, substantial benefits can be gained. By reducing costs, electricity efficiency can raise the standards of living and increase the competitiveness of an economy. Electricity efficiency also leads to reduced requirements in power plant operation, thus leading to reduced consumption of primary energy supplies and a higher quality environment.

Book The New Federalism in Education

Download or read book The New Federalism in Education written by Linda Darling-Hammond and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1981 Education Consolidation and Improvement Act (ECIA) is part of the Reagan Administration's "new federalism." This study, based on personal interviews with officials in nine states, examined decisionmaking as state officials planned for their new responsibilities under the ECIA. State departments of education, state legislatures, and, in some cases, state boards of education will play a larger role in decisions about fund allocations for the ECIA than in the past. In most states, the block grant portion of the law will result in a redistribution of funds away from urban areas and low-income students, although some states have attempted to minimize this effect. Decreased levels of funding for ECIA programs will reduce services offered by most state departments of education. Previous federal financial support for research and development and for desegregation is no longer earmarked. Finally, many state officials find their decisionmaking flexibility constrained by the absence of compliance standards in law or regulation.
