Book excerpt: Image quality assessment addresses the distortion levels and the perceptual quality of a restored or corrupted image. A plethora of metrics has been developed to that end. The usual mean of success of an image quality metric is their ability to agree with the opinions of human subjects, often represented by the mean opinion score. Despite the promising performance of some image quality metrics in predicting the mean opinion score, several problems are still unaddressed. This thesis focuses on analyzing and assessing the performance of image quality metrics. To that end, this work proposes an objective assessment criterion and considers three indicators related to the metrics: (i) robustness to local distortions; (ii) consistency in their values’; and (iii) sensitivity to distortion parameters. In addition, the implementation procedures of the proposed indicators is presented. The thesis then analyzes and assesses several image quality metrics using the developed indicators for images corrupted with Gaussian noise. This work uses both widely-used public image datasets and self-designed controlled cases to measure the performance of IQMs. The results indicate that some image quality metrics are prone to poor performance depending on the number of features. In addition, the work shows that the consistency in IQMs’ values depends on the distortion level. Finally, the results highlight the sensitivity of different metrics to the Gaussian noise parameter. The objective methodology in this thesis unlocks additional insights regarding the performance of IQMs. In addition to the subjective assessment, studying the properties of IQMs outlined in the framework helps in finding a metric suitable for specific applications.

During the past twenty years, tremendous efforts have been made to acquire quantitative geoscience information from ore deposits, geochemical, geophys ical and remotely-sensed measurements. In October 1981, a two-day symposium on "Quantitative Resource Evaluation" and a three-day workshop on "Interactive Systems for Multivariate Analysis and Image Processing for Resource Evaluation" were held in Ottawa, jointly sponsored by the Geological Survey of Canada, the International Association for Mathematical Geology, and the International Geological Correlation Programme. Thirty scientists from different countries in Europe and North America were invited to form a forum for the discussion of quantitative methods for mineral and energy resource assessment. Since then, not only a multitude of research projects directed toward quantitative analysis in the Earth Sciences, but also recent advances in hardware and software technology, such as high-resolution graphics, data-base management systems and statistical packages on mini and micro-computers, made it possible to study large geoscience data sets. In addition, methods of image analysis have been utilized to capture data in digital form and to supply a variety of tools for charaterizing natural phenomena.

Driven in part by the remarkable sophistication of nuclear medicine instrumentation and - crease in computing power and its ready and inexpensive availability, this is a relatively new yet rapidly expanding field. Likewise, although the use of nuclear imaging for diagnosis and therapy has origins dating back almost to the pioneering work of Dr G. de Hevesy, quantitative imaging has only recently emerged as a promising approach for diagnosis and therapy of many diseases. An effort has, therefore, been made to place the reviews provided in this book in a broader context. The effort to do this is reflected by the inclusion of introductory chapters that address basic principles of nuclear medicine instrumentation and dual-modality imaging, followed by overview of issues that are closely related to quantitative nuclear imaging and its potential role in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. A brief overview of each chapter is provided below. Chapter 1 presents a general overview of nuclear medicine imaging physics and instrumentation including planar scintigraphy, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET). Nowadays, patients’ diagnosis and therapy is rarely done without the use of imaging technology. As such, imaging considerations are incorporated in almost every chapter of the book. The development of dual-modality - aging systems is an emerging research field, which is addressed in chapter 2.
