Book excerpt: River-floodplain systems play a fundamental role in fluvial ecosystem preservation, landscape evolution, and for building resilience against natural and anthropogenic modifications. Although floodplains are considered as relatively flat and featureless, high resolution imagery reveal that they are remarkably complex. This realization has led researchers to hypothesize that surface water connectivity can be observed between rivers and their floodplains over a range of discharges. This is contrary to the common belief that floodplains are only connected to the rivers via overbank flow during flooding events. This view of surface water connectivity calls for a reassessment of the physical processes in river-floodplain systems and their implications to landscape evolution. In this study, we focus on the quantification of channel-floodplain connectivity by studying a 23 km long sinuous reach of the lower Trinity River in Texas. This reach transitions from a quasi-normal zone upstream to a backwater-dominated zone downstream. We combine field observations and numerical modeling. High resolution lidar and bathymetric data are used to construct a 2D hydrodynamic model using ANUGA. We use the hydrodynamic model outputs to calculate channel-floodplain connectivity metrics - lateral exchange and residence time. Our initial results show that bidirectional channel-floodplain connectivity exists for a range of river discharges. We also find that this hydrological connectivity is primarily affected by discharge and floodplain vegetation in the form of hydraulic roughness. Sensitivity analyses show that residence time is more sensitive to changes in roughness whereas lateral exchange is more sensitive to changes in discharge

Because of this essential role, mankind has interfered continuously in order to benefit most and at the same time avoid adverse consequences such as flood risk and droughts. This has resulted in often highly engineered rivers with a narrow set of functions. In the last decades rivers are increasingly considered in a more holistic manner as a system with a multitude of interdependent processes. River research and engineering has therefore added to the river fundamentals also themes like ecohydraulics, consequences of climate change, and urbanisation. River Flow 2020 contains the contributions presented at the 10th conference on Fluvial Hydraulics, River Flow 2020, organised under the auspices of the Committee on Fluvial Hydraulics of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR). What should have been a lively physical gathering of researchers, students and practitioners, was converted into an online event as the COVID-19 pandemic hindered international travelling and large gatherings of people. Nevertheless, the fluvial hydraulics community showed their interest and to be very much alive with a high number of participations for such event. Since its first edition in 2002, in Louvain-la-Neuve, this series of conferences has found a large and loyal audience in the river research and engineering community while being also attractive to the new researchers and young professionals. This is highlighted by the large number of contributions applying for the Coleman award for young researchers, and also by the number of applications and attendants to the Master Classes which are aimed at young researchers and students. River Flow 2020 aims to provide an updated overview of the ongoing research in this wide range of topics, and contains five major themes which are focus of research in the fluvial environment: river fundamentals, the digital river, the healthy river, extreme events and rivers under pressure. Other highlights of River Flow 2020 include the substantial number of interdisciplinary subthemes and sessions of special interest. The contributions will therefore be of interest to academics in hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering as well as practitioners that would like to be updated about the newest findings and hot themes in river research and engineering.

When there is a hydrological connection between river and floodplain, it is classified as river-floodplain connectivity. Characterizing river-floodplain connectivity can provide useful information for land and flood management, as well as ecological enhancement. The Lower Rio Grande River is controlled by anthropogenic features designed for energy generation, agricultural production, and water diversion for regions like the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), Texas, USA, and the state of Tamaulipas in Mexico. An increase in flood events along the RGV would cause concern over the riverine interactions with the adjacent floodplains during periods of high discharges and/or rainfall. Numerical models can help in this regard by characterizing river-floodplain systems but are often limited by the scarcity of high-resolution topographic data for flat, low-sloped regions like the Lower Rio Grande area. This limitation of data has hindered the development of accurate numerical models of the Lower Rio Grande region as the dynamic nature of extreme weather requires periodic model updates with the most recent topographic, hydrologic, and hydraulic conditions of the Lower Rio Grande region. To improve understanding of river-floodplain connectivity in the Lower Rio Grande River region, this study uses a finite-volume, 2D hydrodynamic model with 1-meter high resolution lidar topographic data to better model river-floodplain connectivity in the Lower Rio Grande in correspondence of discharges over a range of return periods. The numerical model is calibrated and validated using historical data collected at a nearby gage station, and metrics are used to quantify river-floodplain connectivity in the Lower Rio Grande. In particular, we aim to identify what locations along the study domain get inundated during different return period events, and quantify the water depths, residence times, and lateral exchange that are associated with the inundation patterns. These quantification metrics allow us to holistically account for the surface water hydrologic connectivity of the floodplain and determine locations along the domain that experience the most connectivity. We found that high vegetative areas and levees influence river-floodplain interaction by acting as buffers along the floodplain. Oxbow lakes and levees systems are also shown to be inundated in 50% of the return periods analyzed. Additionally, we found that residence times are highest at lower return periods, while lateral exchange are highest at high return periods. This inverse behavior indicates that water can ultimately be transported further into the floodplain during larger storm events, while the lower storms can cause the floodplain to experience longer water retention in the floodplain. With some further improvements, these data can be leveraged to inform local stakeholders about the river interaction with the floodplain and integrated in decision-making tools to ultimately develop management strategies that make river systems more resilient to future climate scenarios

Book excerpt: This dissertation uses field observations to understand how changes in sediment transport affect the geomorphic evolution of the coastal Trinity River in Texas. I focus on the main channel of the river along the transition from quasi-uniform flow conditions into gradually varying flow. To begin, I will use elevation data in conjunction with stratigraphic analysis to suggest that scroll bars represent levee deposition along the inner bank of the river channel (Chapter 2). Because their channel-ward edge marks the transition from bed-material transport processes that are associated with the point bar and the proximal overbank deposits of the floodplain, they can be considered the geomorphic edge of the active channel form. Chapters three and four then focus on changes within the active channel through a range of time scales. Separate measurements of inner and outer bank volumetric change and migration show that river banks are capable of migrating independently over short time scales, but migrate compensationally over longer periods. The fifth chapter discusses the observation of a new scale of self-organization in bed topography that occurred along the base of the channel during a historic flood in 2015 (which was captured by the time-lapse lidar used in chapters 3 and 4). Repeat depth surveys show that 12 km long wavelength trains of dunes, spread out over an average of 12 river bends, advected and deformed downstream throughout the 55 day flood. These bedform groups are interpreted as an expression of prolonged washout that occurred over an initially spatially variable bedform field. Remaining questions and suggestions for future research directions are provided in the final chapter. Altogether, this dissertation represents a body of work that spans multiple temporal and spatial scales, and provides the community with a better understanding of how gradually varied flow affects sediment transport and geomorphology. In addition, it provides a foundation for future research that can illuminate important details about fluvial processes in general.
