Book Automated Pavement Condition Data Collection Quality Control Quality Assurance and Reliability

Download or read book Automated Pavement Condition Data Collection Quality Control Quality Assurance and Reliability written by Ghim Ping Ong and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, state highway agencies have come to understand the need for high quality pavement condition data at both the project and network levels. At the same time, agencies also realize that they have become too dependent on contractors to ensure the quality of the delivered data without any means to independently assure the quality of these data. This research study therefore aims to investigate the inherent variability of the automated data collection processes and proposes guidelines for an automated data collection quality management program in Indiana. In particular, pavement roughness data (in terms of IRI) and pavement surface distress data (in terms of PCR and individual pavement surface distress ratings) are considered in this study. Quality control protocols adopted by the contractor are reviewed and compared against industry standards. A complete quality control plan is recommended to be adopted for all phases of the data collection cycle: preproject phase, data collection phase, and post-processing phase. Quality assurance of pavement condition data can be viewed in terms of (i) completeness of the delivered data for pavement management; (ii) accuracy, precision and reliability of pavement roughness data; and (iii) accuracy, precision and reliability of individual distress ratings and an aggregate pavement condition rating. An innovative two-stage approach is developed in this study to evaluate delivered data for integrity and completeness. Different techniques and performance measures that can be used to evaluate pavement roughness and pavement surface distress data quality are investigated. Causes for loss in IRI and PCR accuracy and precision are identified and statistical models are developed to relate project- and network-level IRIs and PCRs. Quality assurance procedures are then developed to allow highway agencies improve their pavement condition data collection practices and enhance applications in the pavement management systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing sound, cost-effective management rather than emergency repairs, this comprehensive volume offers practical guidelines on evaluating and managing pavements for airports, roads, and parking lots. The author focuses on the implementation and maintenance of successful management strategies for both network and project levels, with repair techniques also described . Detailed chapters: 1) outline step-by-step procedures for project and network level pavement management 2) illustrate effective cost analysis and budget planning for pavement maintenance 3) guide the reader in the selection and use of non-destructive deflection, roughness measurement, and friction measurement equipment 4) present state-of-the-art pavement rehabilitation and condition prediction techniques 5) demonstrates the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) procedure for airfields and surfaced and unsurfaced roads. Extensive appendices serve as a field manual for identifying all types of pavement distress and their causes, and hundred of photographs facilitate accurate pavement evaluation. Civil and pavement engineers will find complete information on pavement inspection, evaluation, and management in this indispensable reference.

Book Current Practices in Determining Pavement Condition

Download or read book Current Practices in Determining Pavement Condition written by W. L. Gramling and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, maintenance engineers, planners, and others concerned with measuring the condition of existing pavements for the purpose of planning maintenance, rehabilitation, or reconstruction. Information is presented on the various practices in use for the collection, reporting, and application of pavement condition data for their service in Pavement Management Systems (PMS) in the United States and Canada, focusing on four primary measures of pavement condition: distress, roughness, structural capacity, and friction resistance evaluations. Nearly all transportation agencies are using or are in the process of implementing PMS for scheduling rehabilitation and maintenance activities. These systems require data on pavement condition and structural capacity. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the types of equipment being used by state transportation agencies to obtain these data and how the data are used to affect decision making by transportation managers.
