Book Quality Maintenance in Stored Grains and Seeds

Download or read book Quality Maintenance in Stored Grains and Seeds written by Clyde Martin Christensen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality Maintenance in Stored Grains and Seeds was first published in 1986. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Storage molds are a major cause of quality loss in grains and seeds held in farm bins and tanks, in commercial elevators and warehouses, and in barge and ship transport. The damage done by these storage molds is at first invisible, but later shows up as caking, mustiness, total spoilage of part or all of the grain, and heating - sometimes to the temperature of ignition. The authors, both of whom have had extensive first-hand field and laboratory experience with these grain storage fungi and the problems they cause, summarize in readable and readily understandable form the basic principles and specific practices to be followed in order to minimize such losses. Chapters are devoted to grain grades and quality; storage fungi; conditions that promote or prevent loss in quality; spoilage in barge and ship transport; mycotoxins (toxic compounds produced by fungi growing in grains and feeds) and mycotoxicoses (the diseases caused in animals that consume such toxic products); insects, mites, and storage fungi, quality control; and identification of storage fungi as an aid in evaluation of grain condition and storability.

Book Cereal Grain Quality

Download or read book Cereal Grain Quality written by R. Henry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cereal uses range from human food and beverages to animal feeds and industrial products. It is human food and beverages which are the predominant uses covered in this book, since the nutritional quality of cereals for animal feed is described in other publications on animal nutrition, and industrial products are a relatively minor use of cereals. Cereals are the main components of human diets and are crucial to human survival. Three species, wheat, rice and maize, account for the bulk of human food. Barley is the major raw material for beer production and ranks fourth in world production. Other species such as sorghum are regionally important. This book covers all the major cereal species: wheat, rice, maize, barley, sorghum, millet, oats, rye and triticale. Specific chapters have been devoted to a description of the major end-uses of each of the species and to definition of the qualities required for each of their end uses. The functional and nutritional quality of cereals determines their suitability for specific purposes and may limit the quality of the end product, influencing greatly the commercial value of grain. An under standing of the factors that determine grain quality is thus important in the maintenance of efficient and sustainable agricultural and food production. The biochemical constituents of the grain that determine quality have been described in chapters on proteins, carbohydrates and other components. An understanding of the relationships between grain composition and quality is important in selecting grain for specific uses.

Book Grain Storage

Download or read book Grain Storage written by Clyde M. Christensen and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 1969 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain Storage was first published in 1969. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. The deterioration or spoilage of stored grain is a problem of serious dimension, both from the standpoint of the financial balance sheet of those engaged in commercial grain enterprises and as a formidable factor in the worldwide fight against hunger. In this useful book the authors present practical information, in non-technical language, about the causes and methods of preventing the deterioration of stored grains and seeds. The emphasis is on the role of fungi but material also is included on problems with insects, mites, and rodents in connection with grain storage. The fungi are of prime importance since not until recently have they been recognized as a major cause of loss of quality in grains and seeds. Even today many of those who deal with grains, from warehouses to management personnel, fail to realize that fungi may play a decisive role in their operations. The book will be of special interest and value to grain merchants and processors, grain elevator managers and operators, grain inspectors, agronomists and agricultural economists concerned with crop production, and many others in agricultural or food processing fields.

This unusual "electronic symposium" concept was developed by members of the Program, Planning and Organizing Committee as an alternative to the more costly convention-type symposium. As before, leading scientists in specific topic areas were invited to participate. Topic Session chairpersons were encouraged to arrange their own method of communication by telephone, electronic mail, or conference call, and report their findings back to the symposium center at The George Washington University. Additional papers were accepted from individuals and laboratories who are actively involved in relevant areas of research and study. Participation was also arranged for internationally established scientists. International authors are represented herein from Nigeria, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Argentina. Our goal was to present a research composite volume that reflected current developments, informed reviews, new and recently developing areas of the present state of knowledge as it relates to these proceeding topics. All of the reports included in this volume have undergone scientific, technical and editorial peer review.

Book Nutrition and Agricultural Development

Download or read book Nutrition and Agricultural Development written by Nevin Scrimshaw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past thirteen years, symposia have been held either in South America or in Mexico on subjects of special interest to Latin American scientists. When the opportunity of holding the 14th International Biological Symposium in Guate mala was offered, it was most welcome, especially as the occasion was the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP). With the encouragement of members of the Ford Foundation staff and the National Academy of Sciences, the idea for a symposium on the broad approach to the problem of nutrition was developed by Dr. Moises Behar, the second director of INCAP, 1961-1974, Dr. Nevin Scrimshaw, fIrst director of INCAP, 1949-1961, and members of the INCAP staff. Because the availability of food has become a serious international problem, a discussion of the underlying problems was most timely. INCAP, one of the pioneer and leading institutions in the area of nutrition, has a profound influence on nutrition in Latin America. The meeting was attended by about 300 scientists from more than 20 countries. Because this was the fIrst symposium in this series to be held in Central America, it provided an opportunity to get acquainted with scientists from many of the Central American republics. It was especially rewarding that so many students from the Central American universities attended this meeting.

Book Stored Product Protection

    Book Details:
  • Author : E. Highley
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9780851989327
  • Pages : 676 pages

Download or read book Stored Product Protection written by E. Highley and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Working Conference on Stored Product Protection (IWCSPP), held every four years, is the premier world forum for presentation of research results bearing on the safe storage of durable foodstuffs, particularly cereal grains, pulses, and oilseeds. The 6th IWCSPP was held in Canberra, Australia from 17-23 April 1994, under the auspices of CSIRO, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), and the Australian grain handling and storage industry. These two volumes present the proceedings of the conference. There were over 400 participants. Apart from Australia, there were substantial contingents from Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Israel, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and the USA. A further 20 countries were represented. The overall objective was to present advances in research and development on the preservation of stored durable commodities since the 5th IWCSPP held in Bordeaux, France 1990. Much had happened in the intervening four years: the role of methyl bromide had come under scrutiny; pressure from consumers and environmentalists to reduce chemical additives to foodstuffs had become more intense; that mycotoxin contamination of food and feedstuffs was a serious threat to human and animal health had gained general acceptance. Recognizing these and related issues the theme "Stored product protection - a Time of Challenge" was adopted for the conference. Some 250 papers were presented. These proceedings volumes contain, in addition to most of those papers, reports of a series of workshops on specialist topics - trapping, application of inert dusts, extension and small-scale and farm storage, standards, expert systems and appropriate storage - that were also part of the scientific program. Overall, the volumes provide an essential update for entomologists, plant pathologists, engineers and others concerned with stored product protection.
