Book Qualitative Study of Household Livelihood Strategies and Constraints in Zambia

Download or read book Qualitative Study of Household Livelihood Strategies and Constraints in Zambia written by Michelle Poulin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive growth and poverty reduction requires an understanding of the constraints to increasing productivity of the informal sector, which employs the majority of Zambians. Zambians working in this sector are poor, have little education, die young from avoidable diseases, and live predominantly in rural areas. Even if more opportunities for formal employment currently existed, this population would not be qualified for these jobs. Their productive inclusion in society, and making sure they can invest in their children's futures to break the intergenerational transmission of poverty, requires rural investment that can help unlock constraints to informal sector productivity. A recent review of the constraints that women face, relative to men, reveal that women's business performance is affected by a combination of contextual factors and gender differences. This qualitative study sought to understand : (a) the key livelihood strategies used by women and men in Zambia; (b) the key constraints that women and men face; (c) how these constraints shape the strategies that are available; and (d) what women and men understand about human rights. The research had a specific focus on identifying responses that could help to increase women's economic empowerment.

Book The State of Economic Inclusion Report 2021

Download or read book The State of Economic Inclusion Report 2021 written by Colin Andrews and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The State of Economic Inclusion Report 2021 sheds light on one of the most intractable challenges faced by development policy makers and practitioners: transforming the economic lives of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. Economic inclusion programs are a bundle of coordinated, multidimensional interventions that support individuals, households, and communities so they can raise their incomes and build their assets. Programs targeting the extreme poor and vulnerable groups are now under way in 75 countries. This report presents data and evidence from 219 of these programs, which are reaching over 90 million beneficiaries. Governments now lead the scale-up of economic inclusion interventions, often building on preexisting national programs such as safety nets, livelihoods and jobs, and financial inclusion, and 93 percent of the total beneficiaries are covered by government programs. The report offers four important contributions: • A detailed analysis of the nature of these programs, the people living in extreme poverty and vulnerability whom they support, and the organizational challenges and opportunities inherent in designing and leading them. • An evidence review of 80 quantitative and qualitative evaluations of economic inclusion programs in 37 countries. • The first multicountry costing study including both government-led and other economic inclusion programs, indicating that programs show potential for cost efficiencies when integrated into national systems. • Four detailed case studies featuring programs under way in Bangladesh, India, Peru, and the Sahel, which highlight the programmatic and institutional adaptations required to scale in quite diverse contexts. Data from the report are available on the PEI Data Portal (http://www.peiglobal.org), where users can explore and submit data to build on this baseline.

Book Evaluating the Effectiveness of Out grower Projects in Reducing Poverty in Rural Zambia A Case of the Eastern Province

Download or read book Evaluating the Effectiveness of Out grower Projects in Reducing Poverty in Rural Zambia A Case of the Eastern Province written by Sunday Silungwe and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, University of Lusaka, language: English, abstract: The Living Conditions Monitoring Survey (LCMS) conducted in 2015 revealed that rural poverty stood at 76.6 percent and 23.4 percent for urban poverty respectively. To this effect, rural poverty still remains high and predominantly a rural phenomenon. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the out-grower schemes on reducing poverty and answer the general research question on how effective were the out-grower schemes in reducing poverty in rural Zambia. Pragmatism was the philosophical view that underpinned the study and it applied to the mixed research method approach for this study. The convergent parallel strategy of the mixed research method approach was used. The target population was 50,000 smallholder farmers and a questionnaire with open ended questions (qualitative) and closed questions (quantitative) was administered to a sample size of 396 smallholders farmers. Simple random sampling was used to select smallholder farmers.Qualitative data was analyzed by using the inductive process of building from the data to broad themes and then to interpretation. Quantitative data was analysed by using the Chi-square tests to ascertain association between critical variables measured by categories of out-grower farmers and independent farmers. The T-tests compared the treatment and control groups on variables of interest. The coefficient of variation (CV) was used to gauge the level of respondents’ disagreement (dissention) in responses while coefficient of consensus (CC) was used to gauge the level of respondents’ agreement (consensus) in responses, applied to the Likert scale and any other ordinal responses. The findings from the study revealed that the out-grower schemes implementation has contributed to a positive change in poverty reduction to smallholder farmers participating in the out-grower scheme. Further, out-grower farmers have improved their knowledge in understanding the operation of the out-grower scheme. Subsequently, the out-grower schemes have benefited the communities. In this regard, the study concluded that the out-grower schemes have been effective in reducing poverty in the rural areas of Zambia. The study recommended that there was need to address the issue of power imbalance between the out-grower farmers and the out-grower firms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new collection of contributions brings together current thinking on poverty reduction and rural livelihoods in developing countries. As well as leading economists in the field such as Frank Ellis and Chris Barrett, there are a number of contributors from developing countries themselves. The book examines both macroeconomic and microeconomic phenomena and contains wide range of case studies. Skilfully exposing the gap that exists between the rhetoric of poverty reduction strategies in capital cities and the practice of public sector delivery in rural areas, this key text will be essential reading for advanced students and researchers in the fields of rural development, rural livelihoods, poverty reduction strategies and Sub-Saharan Africa development as well as advisors and practitioners in international organizations.

Book Rural Areas Between Regional Needs and Global Challenges

Download or read book Rural Areas Between Regional Needs and Global Challenges written by Walter Leimgruber and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date account of the many processes shaping and transforming rural space in various parts of the world. The various case studies focus on the multi-functionality of the rural world and the driving forces behind it. The book demonstrates that rural areas are no longer simply characterized by an agricultural economy, and instead accommodate multiple complementary activities. It also touches upon two major changes that have taken place. The first is the process of rurbanization, which has led to the clear distinction between town and countryside becoming blurred: urban traits have penetrated rural areas, and rural traits have invaded towns. The second change is that rural areas are increasingly seen as multi-functional, providers not only of food and other natural resources but also locations for the generation of renewable energy (wind farms, solar farms, biogas) and regions for the preservation of biodiversity. These transformations have resulted in a new understanding and self-image of rural areas and their populations.--

Book Integrated Agriculture aquaculture IAA Systems in Zambia

Download or read book Integrated Agriculture aquaculture IAA Systems in Zambia written by Jacob Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture contributes to food security, agricultural development, and poverty reduction initiatives in the country of Zambia. In the Northern Province, an abundance of perennial water bodies and high local demand for food fish create ideal conditions for aquacultural development. Smallholder farmers adopting aquaculture cultivate native tilapias in earthen ponds and use harvested fish for both income generation and consumption. However, rural regions of Northern Province are resource-poor; and road, social service and market infrastructures are underdeveloped. Due to limited market access and household purchasing power, many farmers cannot obtain high-quality commercial inputs for use in aquaculture. Instead, integrated-agriculture practices are adopted, whereby on-farm resources are used to supply essential feeds and fertilizers for aquacultural systems. Recent research emphasizes that the development of locally adapted, integrated-agriculture technologies is crucial for increasing productivity in aquaculture and optimizing the benefits that aquaculture provides to household livelihood. However, these studies also highlight existing gaps in knowledge regarding local systems of resource management, as well as specific functions that aquaculture performs in the livelihoods of smallholders. Therefore, this case study used a mixed method design to expand understanding regarding local contexts of resource use within smallholder aquaculture systems in Northern Province. Three investigations were conducted to: (a) identify smallholders' perceptions regarding the challenges experienced in aquacultural system management, (b) understand how local feed and fertilization strategies contribute or fail to contribute to productivity in aquacultural systems; and (c) identify the characteristics of farm systems and household livelihood which most explain the diversity of aquacultural systems and associated feed management strategies. A sample of n=68 smallholder farmers adopting aquaculture in Luwingu and Luponsoshi districts of Northern Province participated in this study from October through November 2021. Farmers engaged in semi-structured interviews, surveys, farm appraisals, and open-ended discussions. Interviews, discussions, and farm appraisals generated qualitative data contextualizing farmer perceptions of aquacultural systems management. Surveys generated quantitative data describing household livelihood, farm systems, management intensities in aquaculture, and aquacultural system outcomes. Qualitative data were analyzed using focused and thematic coding. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate statistics, as well as analysis of variance, multiple linear regression, and chi-squared tests. Key qualitative findings indicated that farmers perceive that access and availability of aquacultural feeds were primary constraints to system management. Farmers perceived that quantities and qualities of feed were least proficient during the months of August to November. Quantitative analyses contextualized technical intensities of local management and identified local and farm generated feeds most associated with productivity in aquaculture. Additionally, an analysis of farm system diversity identified four categories of smallholders which differed according to household capital endowment, food insecurity and access, economic orientation, technical intensity in aquaculture, and aquacultural production outcomes. The results of this study inform the development of appropriate interventions or technologies which aim to optimize aquacultural feeding strategies for resource-poor farmers. Such technology development may benefit household food and nutritional security by offering opportunities for smallholders to intensify aquacultural systems according to their own resources and capabilities.
