Book Quakerism in the Atlantic World 1690 1830

Download or read book Quakerism in the Atlantic World 1690 1830 written by Robynne Rogers Healey and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third installment in the New History of Quakerism series is a comprehensive assessment of transatlantic Quakerism across the long eighteenth century, a period during which Quakers became increasingly sectarian even as they expanded their engagement with politics, trade, industry, and science. The contributors to this volume interrogate and deconstruct this paradox, complicating traditional interpretations of what has been termed “Quietist Quakerism.” Examining the period following the Toleration Act in England of 1689 through the Hicksite-Orthodox Separation in North America, this work situates Quakers in the eighteenth-century British Atlantic world. Three thematic sections—exploring unique Quaker testimonies and practices; tensions between Quakerism in community and Quakerism in the world; and expressions of Quakerism around the Atlantic world—broaden geographic understandings of the Quaker Atlantic experience to determine how local events shaped expressions of Quakerism. The authors challenge oversimplified interpretations of Quaker practices and reveal a complex Quaker world, one in which prescription and practice were more often negotiated than dictated, even after the mid-eighteenth-century “reformation” and tightening of the Discipline on both sides of the Atlantic. Accessible and well-researched, Quakerism in the Atlantic World, 1690-1830, provides fresh insights and raises new questions about an understudied period of Quaker history. In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume include Richard C. Allen, Erin Bell, Erica Canela, Elizabeth Cazden, Andrew Fincham, Sydney Harker, Rosalind Johnson, Emma Lapsansky-Werner, Jon Mitchell, and Geoffrey Plank.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built in 1816, the Drumore Quaker meetinghouse in southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, was home to the Drumore Friends Meeting for 120 years. Quakers moved to the area at the turn of the 19th century and became part of Little Britain Monthly Meeting. Many of its members were active in the Underground Railroad at mid-century, as were other Quakers thoughout Lancaster County and elsewhere. By the early 20th century the meeting was in decline, but members who were concerned about the preservation of the meetinghouse and cemetery formed the Drumore Cemetery Association. Many of those Friends are pictured below at the time of the meetings 1916 centennial. The association has faithfully maintained the property and in 2016 is commemorating the 200th anniversary of the building of the meetinghouse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: is book explores the growth of abolitionism among Quakers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey from 1688 to 1780, providing a case study of how groups change their moral attitudes. Dr. Soderlund details the long battle fought by reformers like gentle John Woolman and eccentric Benjamin Lay. The eighteenth-century Quaker humanitarians succeeded only after they diluted their goals to attract wider support, establishing a gradualistic, paternalistic, and segregationist model for the later antislavery movement. Book A Hoosier Quaker Goes to War

Download or read book A Hoosier Quaker Goes to War written by Sandy Barnard and published by Ast Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book covers the story of the military career of Major Joel H. Elliott, who, despite his Quaker upbringing, served heroically with the 7th Indiana Cavalry during the Civil War. After the war he was appointed as a major in the 7th U.S. Cavalry. For a time, during Lt. Col. George's Custer's suspension in 1867-1867, he commanded the regiment. Upon Custer's return in October 1868, the regiment participated in the campaign against the Cheyenne in Oklahoma Territory. On Nov. 27, 1868, Elliott and his 17-man detachment were cut off by the Indians and annihilated. Ever since, Custer has been accused of abandoning the major to his fate. In the book author Barnard takes a new look at this historical controversy"--Amazon's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifteen insightful essays examines the complexity and diversity of Quaker antislavery attitudes across three centuries, from 1658 to 1890. Contributors from a range of disciplines, nations, and faith backgrounds show Quaker's beliefs to be far from monolithic. They often disagreed with one another and the larger antislavery movement about the morality of slaveholding and the best approach to abolition. Not surprisingly, contributors explain, this complicated and evolving antislavery sensibility left behind an equally complicated legacy. While Quaker antislavery was a powerful contemporary influence in both the United States and Europe, present-day scholars pay little substantive attention to the subject. This volume faithfully seeks to correct that oversight, offering accessible yet provocative new insights on a key chapter of religious, political, and cultural history. Contributors include Dee E. Andrews, Kristen Block, Brycchan Carey, Christopher Densmore, Andrew Diemer, J. William Frost, Thomas D. Hamm, Nancy A. Hewitt, Maurice Jackson, Anna Vaughan Kett, Emma Jones Lapsansky-Werner, Gary B. Nash, Geoffrey Plank, Ellen M. Ross, Marie-Jeanne Rossignol, James Emmett Ryan, and James Walvin.
