Book Tragedy on the Mountain

Download or read book Tragedy on the Mountain written by Brent Poppen and published by Rj Communications. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've learned that it is not the end result that matters but the experiences that lead us to our destiny. Every time I give classroom presentations and ask the students to pretend they are me when answering this question: If I could go back to the day that I became paralyzed and change what happen, would I? Most students would guess my answer to be"Yes." Then when I tell then my answer is always: No I would not change anything because if I did I WOULD NOT BE HERE WITH YOU TODAY. Each time I could see in some of their eyes that they understood immediately. My sudden transition into the life of a quadriplegic and near death illness has taught me to live for today for tomorrow may not come or it may come, but not as planned. In retrospect, I realize I had a choice to make that would shape the rest of my life. I could have chosen to be angry at the world for what happened to me or not be afraid of dreaming again and working hard to make my dreams become a reality. It is evident that I chose to dream and not be afraid to fail. In so doing, my life story is best summed up as someone who: ACCOMPLISHED A LOT- BUT GAVE MORE. ENDED UP AT A HIGHER PLACE THAN THE PLACE FROM WHICH I FELL."

Book excerpt: A spinal cord injury is always serious; for avid horsewoman Pamela Henline, it was devastating. After an automobile accident, she was paralyzed from the chest down. She relates what it is like to start life again. Information about her treatment, recoveries and mental state is shared. Difficulties seemed insurmountable; because she lived alone, with no close relatives, caregivers were problematic. But she found there are still many positive things in life. Many people became part of her recovery. A team of lawyers fought for her financial well-being. Within a few years, her life emerged quite differently than she could have imagined, including her health, abilities, relationships and love. Her story is an inspiration to others who struggle with physical disabilities. She hopes that some of the details can inspire readers to work hard toward what seems an impossible goal.

Book The Wright Stuff

Download or read book The Wright Stuff written by Victor J. Wright and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young and healthy, Victor J. Wright was only fifteen years old in 1976 when he broke his neck playing football at John Muir High School in Pasadena, California. He had severed the vertebrae at the second level, right under his brain. Many suffering this injury would have died, but Wright survived. In The Wright Stuff, author David D. Rutherford, Wright's former classmate, friend, and former newspaper reporter, tells Wright's story--from his birth, through his injury and hospitalization, and beyond. This biography narrates how Wright was one of the first quadriplegics to earn a college degree and how he cofounded a nonprofit organization that provides relief efforts to victims of natural disasters around the world. It shares how Wright donates books and audiovisual materials to local libraries and has inspired numerous squads from his high school alma mater to victory. In 2013, he was ordained a minister by the Association of Fundamental Ministers and Churches. Though Wright has experienced a host of challenges throughout the years, he credits his faith in God and the loving care of his family and closest friends for being allowed to live the past four decades in a way that has inspired thousands and has made him a community treasure.

Book Functional Electrical Rehabilitation

Download or read book Functional Electrical Rehabilitation written by Chandler A. Phillips and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On one of my returns to California, I attended the "Disabilities Expo 88" at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Among the various marvels oftech nology for the wheelchair disabled were stair-climbing wheelchairs, self raising and lowering kitchen cabinetry, and even a completely accessible "dude ranch" experience. At the same time, as a guest of the Southern California Chapter of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, I was part of a small booth (among the more than two hundred exhibitors) in which we had spinal cord injured people up and walking with a lower extremity bracing system (the reciprocating gait orthosis) used at the PEERS Spinal Injury Program in Los Angeles. I had a young man, a C6/7 level quadriplegic, walking with electrical muscle stimulation and lower extremity bracing. The system is reviewed in Chapter 8 of this book. As these "disabled" persons walked erect and upright among their wheel chair bound colleagues and took long, confident strides past exhibits extol ling the latest technological virtues of yet another "new" wheelchair (Fig. 1), I reflected on the paradox of it all. What a majority of these paralyzed people W0re really looking for was an alteration oftheir disability so that they could more normally function (in an unaltered environment). What the great majority of the exhibitors were offering was an alteration of the environment so that they could more normally function (with an unaltered disability).

Book Wheeling and Dealing

  • Author : Esther I. Wilder
  • Publisher : Vanderbilt University Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780826515353
  • Pages : 390 pages

Download or read book Wheeling and Dealing written by Esther I. Wilder and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before his motorcycle accident, Travis saw himself becoming a pro football player. Now, paralyzed from the nipple down, he says, "At times it's a pain in the ass-literally and figuratively. But it allows me to not be as threatening to some people [the way I was when] I was still an athlete. Because a lot of times male interaction is done on the basis of pissing contests: I'm bigger, I'm tougher, I'm stronger, I'm smarter. When you're in a chair, they don't look at you like that." At the same time, Travis complains that many people are uncomfortable interacting with him because of his disability. "I would rather you make a mistake and deal with me than not deal with me at all." Meghan is a high-level quadriplegic, living alone, who uses a power wheelchair and requires daily attendant care. She laments, "There are so many people who think we're asexual, we're not pretty, and we're creeps and weirdoes." To dispel this myth, she envisions a fashion show of women in wheelchairs parading down a runway. Meghan has been involved in a number of sexual relationships since sustaining her injury. While she doesn't think her disability has diminished her sexual pleasure, she feels that it has affected her sexual performance: "Well, you can't move it. You can't, like, bump and grind." In 32 unusually frank in-depth interviews like these, the men and women in this book freely discuss their sex lives, their beliefs about God, how they want others to treat them, and whether they want to walk again. In each chapter the author presents their complex voices and comprehensive research about different facets of spinal cord injury (SCI). Wheeling and Dealing explores the extent to which people with spinal cord injury locate their challenges in their physical impairments or in the social environment. Some disagree with those disability activists who focus almost exclusively on the latter, but the author examines this issue in depth. Topics include: --Physical health from degrees of loss of function to problems like pressure sores, temperature regulation, and bladder control. --The stages of psychological adjustment and rehabilitation. --Obstacles to sexual intimacy, treatment of erectile dysfunction, and new sources of sexual pleasure and emotional intimacy. --Religion and spirituality. --Social and political beliefs, with those with SCI weighing in on everything from welfare services to embryonic stem cell research. --Dating, marriage, and parenting. --Friendship networks and social supports; concerns about transportation and accessibility; stigma. --Education, employment, and economic consequences. This book is the recipient of the 2004 Norman L. and Roselea J. Goldberg Prize from Vanderbilt University Press for the best project in the area of medicine.

Book excerpt: Studies on physical education and sports for persons with disabilities are an interdisciplinary domain in which theory and practice are closely intertwined. In fact, one of the primary objectives of professionals in this field is to eliminate the existing separation between the theoretical and practical aspects of their work. This volume, consisting of selected papers presented at the Ninth International Symposium on Adapted Physical Activity, was published with the aim of providing researchers and practitioners with insights into each other's work. The 39 contributions in this book deal with a wide range of themes including the health and fitness of people with disabilities, innovative sports teaching methods, biofeedback training and motor control, the medical aspects of rehabilitation, and physical activity programs for the elderly.
