Book Quaderni di scrittura creativa Degustazione di scrittura creativa Di vin e parole

Download or read book Quaderni di scrittura creativa Degustazione di scrittura creativa Di vin e parole written by Francesca Paola Alparone and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: In this era of 'experience economy' and the leisure industry, cities face increasing pressure to distinguish themselves. Ever since Frank Gehry put the city of Bilbao into the international spotlight with his design for the Guggenheim museum, architecture played a more and more important role within this competition between cities. City branding, the planned image or brand of a city, now forms a challenge for architects and urban planners. How do you position a city in a culture dominated by globalization? What are the priorities for inhabitants, companies and investors? Group portraits of young architects 2002 brought together four occasional groups of architects, which each developed a project for two cities in the Netherlands based on city branding. Critical essays on the subject by Berci Florian, Hans Mommaas and Michael Speaks. Koen van Synghel puts the projects in perspective.

Book A Short Border Handbook

Download or read book A Short Border Handbook written by Gazmend Kapllani and published by Portobello Books. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'It is not a recognized mental illness like agoraphobia or depression ... It's largely a matter of luck whether one suffers from border syndrome: it depends where you were born. I was born in Albania.' After spending his childhood and school years in Albania, imagining that the miniskirts and quiz shows of Italian state TV were the reality of life in the West, and fantasizing accordingly about living on the other side of the border, the death of Hoxha at last enables Gazmend Kapllani to make his escape. However, on arriving in the Promised Land, he finds neither lots of willing leggy lovelies nor a warm welcome from his long-lost Greek cousins. Instead, he gets banged up in a detention centre in a small border town. As Gazi and his fellow immigrants try to find jobs, they begin to plan their future lives in Greece, imagining riches and successes which always remain just beyond their grasp. The sheer absurdity of both their plans and their new lives is overwhelming. Both detached and involved, ironic and emotional, Kapllani interweaves the story of his experience with meditations upon 'border syndrome' - a mental state, as much as a geographical experience - to create a brilliantly observed, amusing and perceptive debut.

Book The Castle on the Hudson

Download or read book The Castle on the Hudson written by Renato Cantore and published by Rubbettino Editore. This book was released on 2017-07-25T00:00:00+02:00 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Paterno was seven when he left Castelmezzano, a small mountain town in Basilicata to set sail on one of the rattletrap ships headed to America. Thirty years later he was one of the top builders in New York City, among the first to construct the skyscrapers that would form the world's most famous skyline. Intelligence, brilliance, intuition and an ability to stay ahed of the times made him a leading figure in the life of Manhattan. He created garden communities, focused on new technologies and turned to the best architects. Paterno didn't just want to offer houses, but new lifestyles to tens of thousands of people. His first American dream looked like a white castle at the northernmost tip of Manhattan, where he lived for years with his wife and son, sorrounded by a small but very loyal retinue. A friend of Giuseppe Prezzolini, he donated a library of 20.000 books, the Paterno Library, to the Casa Italiana at Columbia University. Fiorello La Guardia, the Italian-American mayor of New York City, called him a genius. Born into poverty, Paterno died a wealthy man on the green of the most exclusive country club in Westchester.

Book Linguistic Variation Issues Case and Agreement in Northern Russian Participial Constructions

Download or read book Linguistic Variation Issues Case and Agreement in Northern Russian Participial Constructions written by Civardi, Antonio and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author’s proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation.

Book Remov d from human eyes Madness and Poetry 1676 1774

Download or read book Remov d from human eyes Madness and Poetry 1676 1774 written by Natali, Ilaria and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London’s Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the ‘sane other’, shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period.

Book Scalar Verb Classes Scalarity Thematic Roles and Arguments in the Estonian Aspectual Lexicon

Download or read book Scalar Verb Classes Scalarity Thematic Roles and Arguments in the Estonian Aspectual Lexicon written by Anne Tamm and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph discusses scalar verb classes. It tests theories of linguistic form and meaning, arguments and thematic roles, using Estonian data. The analyses help to understand the aspectual structure of Estonian. In Estonian, transitive verbs fall into aspectual classes based on the type of case-marking of objects and adjuncts. The book relates the morphosyntactic frames of verbs to properties typically associated with adjectives and nouns: scalarity and boundedness. Verbs are divided according to how their aspect is composed. Some verbs lexicalize a scale, which can be bounded either lexically or compositionally. Aspectual composition involves the unification of features. Compositionally derived structures differ according to which of the aspectually relevant dimensions are bounded.

Book The Swallows of Monte Cassino

Download or read book The Swallows of Monte Cassino written by Frederika Randall and published by New Acdemia+ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Strega Prize–winning author of The Girl with a Leica delivers a novel that hinges on one of the bloodiest World War II battles and those who fought it. In this highly original novel, Janeczek retells the four-month-long Battle of Monte Cassino from the point of view of the Maori, Gurkha, Polish, North African, small-town American and other Allied foot soldiers who fought and died under German fire near that 6th century Benedictine abbey. Twined through the battle is another story, a memory of the drowned and the saved in Janeczek’s own family in wartime Eastern Europe, where Jews who did not go to Nazi death camps went to Soviet gulag camps, and sometimes survived, and even went on to fight at Monte Cassino. A powerful reflection on all the ways that rights can be taken from us. “Helena Janeczek’s novel is this: a tattoo etched on the skin, and not painlessly. A vast design that brings together threads from all the various lives that converged in that legendary battle. The beauty of her tale lies in its structure, the way opposites converge: the chaos of battle and the silence of the defeated, ordinariness and the heroism of the powerless, carefully guarded memory and impetuous youth, the past perpetually intertwined with the present.” —Roberto Saviano, author of Gomorrah

Book Guilty of Dancing the Chachach

Download or read book Guilty of Dancing the Chachach written by Guillermo Cabrera Infante and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Like the rhythm of the chachacha, the three short stories in this collection are marked by repetition and contrast. They all begin with the same scene: on a rainy afternoon, a man and woman are having lunch in a restaurant in the center of Havana. Each time, however, this scene is the genesis of a different love story, each corresponding to the vision of three distinct islands: the island of African rites and sacred tambours; the island of luxury hotels and American tourists; and finally, an island of communist utopia and political persecution. In this humorous, ironic and touching work, Cabrera Infante invites the reader on a journey through time, and a quest to discover the many faces of his beloved Cuba."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
