Besides, negligence and elderly abuse lead to a high death rate, a necessity because there simply are not enough facilities and beds available to meet the steadily increasing demand. Write your Congress person and ask her to eliminate the nursing home death panels. Signing a medical advance directive is tantamount to signing your own death warrant. There was a time when families felt it was their responsibility to take care of elderly relatives. To our everlasting shame, that time is long gone. Still, we have the ability to choose assisted living facilities where the elderly have the ability to remain an active part of the community rather than isolated institutional nursing homes that steal social security checks, force their residents to take unnecessary tranquilizers so as to make them easier to manage, and attempt to hide the abuse that takes place behind the scene.
