Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Island in the Light / Isla en la luz is a fascinating and insightful compilation that pairs contemporary Cuban visual art and literature by having 30 prominent writers respond to the works of 35 renowned artists. Contemporary Cuban art, literature, and music come together in Island in the Light / Isla en la luz. This bilingual compilation of the work of 35 artists and 30 writers began by selecting artwork by renowned artists and asking prominent writers to create original stories, poems, or essays in response. The result is a thoroughly original and captivating selection of visual arts and literature in dialogue that conveys a sense of the essence and energy of Cuban arts today. Artists represented include Tania Bruguera, Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons, Yoan Capote, Teresita Fernández, Roberto Fabelo, Carlos Garaicoa, and Enrique Martinez Celaya. Among the writers are Wendy Guerra, José Kozer, Jorge Enrique Lage, Legna Rodríguez Iglesias, Achy Obejas, Leonardo Padura, and Reina María Rodríguez. The works are drawn from the Jorge M. Pérez Art Collection; the majority have been gifted to the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), while the others are promised gifts to PAMM. The volume also includes music: Pavel Urkiza composed original scores inspired by several of the selections that readers link to through QR codes. In addition to the short stories, poems, and essays inspired by the artwork, the volume includes commentary and critical essays by Jorge M. Pérez, Carlos Garaicoa, and Wendy Guerra and Leonardo Padura. Proceeds benefit The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, which will redirect the funds to arts organizations.

Book In Pursuit of Poem Shadows

Download or read book In Pursuit of Poem Shadows written by Kay Pritchett and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuit of Poem Shadows: Pureza Canelo's Second Poetics deciphers the intricate poetic language of Pureza Canelo (Spain, 1946) through a close analysis of her mature works. Designed to complement Nature's Colloquy with the Word (Bucknell, 2004), the current text traces concerns related to the poet's second stage of evolvement. In contextualizing the poet's work, Pritchett discovers commonalities with Romantic, Modernist, and creacionista poets. Canelo's insights, moreover, display a resemblance to Heidegger's thought on time, being, and poetry, Lacan's ideas on experience and language, and 3iyek's view of the subject's relationship to the object.

Book The Book of Fortune and Prudence

Download or read book The Book of Fortune and Prudence written by Bernat Metge and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These new translations of Bernat Metge’s Libre de Fortuna e Prudència (1381) into Spanish (verse) and English (prose) make this key early work by 14th-century Catalonia’s most challenging writer available to the wider audience it has longed deserved. As with Metge’s masterwork, Lo somni (The Dream), recently translated by Cortijo Ocaña and Elisabeth Lagresa (Benjamins, 2013), the writing of The Book of Fortune and Prudence seems to have been precipitated by a larger crisis in Catalan society, in this case, an all-too-familiar-sounding banking crisis. Drawing on sources ranging from Boethius, to the Roman de la Rose to Arthurian fable, Metge unveils the workings of the world through his two allegorical women, Fortune (good and bad) and Prudence, in a search for consolation in the midst of inexplicable reversals of fortune--those of others, and perhaps his own. But as in the Somni, Metge refuses here to offer pat solutions to the crises of his day, offering what is perhaps one of our earliest glimpses of the impact of new ideas coming from Italy in the Iberian Peninsula. The work is written in the popular noves rimades form (octosyllabic rhymed couplets) in the challenging mix of Occitan and Catalan common to verse writing in 14th century Catalonia. Cortijo’s and Martines’s tri-lingual edition, together with its fine introduction and notes, is an extremely valuable contribution as it makes this unduly neglected text of the later Iberian Middle Ages available for students and other readers in a broadly accessible, yet scholarly, form. Book Francisco Nieva and Postmodernist Theatre

Download or read book Francisco Nieva and Postmodernist Theatre written by Francis Komla Aggor and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francisco Nieva and Postmodernist Theatre will engage with and advance the debate on the viability of postmodernist theatre in general by presenting the works of Francisco Nieva as a bona-fide postmodernist theatre formulated on avant-garde foundations. The study will also redefine the existing historical boundaries of literary postmodernism by asserting Spain's role in shaping that history through the 1940s neo-avant-garde Movement, Postismo. The author argues that Postismo is the earliest systematic manifestation in the Iberian Peninsula of literary postmodernism as we know it, a fact often ignored on account of Franco's suppression of it, and that Nieva is not only Postismo's chief proponent but also the only legitimate postist playwright.

Book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish

Download or read book Binominal Quantifiers in Spanish written by Katrien Dora Verveckken and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification is central to human experience (cf. Aristotle’s Organon): the most basic aspects of human life and reasoning involve quantity assessment. This study sheds lights on a highly frequent way to express quantification in Spanish, viz. the binominal quantifier (e.g. un aluviónN1 de llamadasN2 ‘a flood of calls’) which assesses the quantity of N2 in terms of N1. This volume offers a corpus-based, cognitive-functional analysis of binominal quantifiers (BQ) in Spanish. The first part is dedicated to the development of BQs and starts from the assumption that BQs are cross-linguistically involved in grammaticalization. This monograph frames the history of BQs in Spanish in terms of constructional levels of change and highlights the complex interplay between analogical thinking and conceptual persistence. The second part motivates both the ample variation in the paradigm of quantifying nouns and their combinatorial pattern by the very same mechanism of conceptually-driven analogy. The study thus yields an innovative functional model of BQs in Spanish, in synchrony and in diachrony, with major implications for reference grammars and theory building.
