Book excerpt: Most existing research in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has been focused on proposing protocols to facilitate either energy effient communication or sensing operation in WSNs. We believe that there exist fundamental limits in the operations and the parameters of WSNs. Characterizing these fundamental limits, establishing the relationships between the parameters and the WSN performance, and identifying the tradeoffs among different performance measures can provide us insights in designing sensor networks. In this dissertation, the QoS properties of WSNs, including the coverage, reachability, and delay, are analyzed in an analytical framework. How the network parameters, such as the node density, sensing range, transmission range, impact the aforementioned QoS properties are investigated by abstracting the randomly deployed WSNs as random geometric graphs. Both homogenous and heterogenous sensor networks are addressed. Based on the analytical model, optimal sensor network parameters can be chosen to improve the network performance while achieving pre-specified QoS constraints. Besides this abstraction, practical issues affecting the QoS performance of WSNs are also examined by doing extensive simulations in this dissertation. Specifically, results are obtained for the QoS properties in the flooding of WSN when a cross-layer approach is adopted, and other practical issues such as channel fading and MAC layer contention are taken into account. The results show that exchanging more information across the layers can help improve effciency of the protocol. It is further shown that wireless fading helps to reduce the hop count, although it makes the transmission range less predictable and limits the improvement in the performance of such cross-layer design in WSNs.

The main research problems in the domain of routing data packets in a multi-hop network are the optimisation of the energy and the routing under multi-criteria QoS constraints (e.g., energy, reliability, delay, ...). To address these problems, this dissertation proposes two contributions. Firstly, an optimal probabilistic routing protocol which balances the usage of energy and secondly, a routing protocol which is able to simultaneously take into account multiple QoS metrics. In fact, for balancing the energy consumption between the multiple existing links, the existing probabilistic routing protocols assign a probability to each link, either in an empirical way or depending on proportional energy level of the path. We did not know what are the optimal probabilities which lead to the optimal network lifetime. Our first contribution proposes optimal probabilities by modeling and solving a linear programming problem. As for the multi-constrainted QoS routing problem, multiple metrics are defined by RPL (a standard of IETF) but the existing protocols chose paths either according to only one metric or using a single aggregated function with multiple metrics, but never all the metrics simultaneously. In this dissertation, we first evaluate the performance of the operator calculus algebra introduced by R. Schott and S. Staples which defines an efficient algorithm allowing to find all the paths which satisfy the multiple constraints in a graph, and secondly we proposed a distributed version of this algorithm based on which a routing protocol has been designed. Both contributions are implemented in Contiki environment and simulated/emulated under Cooja (a software designed for simulating protocols of WSNs).

Book excerpt: Recent advances in MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) and radio technology has enabled development of low-cost wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Due to their ease of deployment and ad hoc connectivity, WSNs are emerging as a promising tool for a wide range of applications. Each sensor node is equipped with programmable computing, multiple-parameter sensing and wireless communication capability. Sensor nodes are however, constrained in terms of available resources such as energy, storage and computation. Such limitations make it really challenging to realize a reliable WSN infrastructure that can efficiently process different types of user queries. The objective of this dissertation is to develop energy-efficient mechanisms for enabling query processing in WSNs, despite unreliable nature of the wireless medium. The first part of this dissertation focuses on designing energy-efficient architectures for processing different kinds of user queries. Queries in WSNs can be broadly classified as location-based queries and attribute-based queries. To enable processing of long-running location-based queries, the recent trend is to evaluate queries within the WSN, so as to reduce the overall communication and energy consumption of the WSN. The in-network query processing architecture proposed in this dissertation determines optimal placement of query operators within a WSN in a decentralized manner and also adapts to continual changes in network and data properties. On the other hand, the recent trend in processing attribute-based queries is employing data-centric storage schemes that eliminate the need for flooding the WSN. In this dissertation, a novel data-centric storage scheme has been developed to determine rendezvous points for storing individual attributes depending on their correlation with other attributes. Both analytical and simulation studies have been performed to identify the conditions under which the proposed architecture is useful. The second part of this dissertation focuses on designing mechanisms for ensuring reliable and timely delivery of the sensed data. WSNs are generally deployed in inhospitable terrains and consist of a dense deployment of sensor nodes. Furthermore, wireless communication is inherently unpredictable and error-prone. Hence, it is imperative to design an efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol that facilitates guaranteed delivery of data over unreliable wireless links. In this dissertation, such an on-demand reliable MAC protocol has been proposed and its superior performance in terms of reliability, latency and scalability has been demonstrated. Furthermore, we have also proposed another MAC protocol that is both energy-efficient and reliable. The energy-efficiency of the proposed MAC protocol has been achieved by switching the sensor nodes to sleep mode when they are not involved in data communication. However in doing so, measures have been taken to avoid problems like overemitting, excessive latency and frequent changes of the radio state. Thus, our proposed MAC protocol reliably delivers sensed data with minimum power consumption, thereby attempting to reach the desirable objectives of WSNs.
