This book was released on 2004 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polarized Z° decays into three jets have been detected and measured in the SLD (SLAC Large Detector) experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). The hadrons from the jets were detected in the SLD liquid argon calorimeter, providing a sensitivity over 98% of the solid angle. The spin of the gluon was tested by studying the scaled jet energies (x1, x2, x3) the Ellis-Karliner angle (cos[theta]{sub EK}) and the parameters of event plane orientation ([alpha], [alpha]{sub N} [chi]). These measured variables are compared with quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and a scalar gluon model. Good agreement is found between data and the vector QCD model for the distributions of x1, x2, x3 and cos[theta]{sub EK}.

Book Recent Tests of QCD at SLD

Download or read book Recent Tests of QCD at SLD written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present selected results on strong interaction physics from the SLD experiment at the SLAC Linear Collider. We report on several new studies of 3- and 4-jet hadronic Z° decays, in which jets are identified as quark, antiquark or gluon. The gluon energy spectrum is measured over the full kinematic range, providing an improved test of QCD and limits on anomalous bbg and bbg couplings. The parity violation in Z° 2!b{bar b}g decays is consistent with electroweak theory plus QCD. New tests of T- and CP-conservation at the bbg vertex are performed. An improved measurement of the rate of gluon splitting into b{bar b} pairs yields g{sub b{bar b}} = 0.00244 ± 0.00059(stat.) ± 0.00034(syst.). We also present a number of new results on jet fragmentation into identified hadrons. The B hadron energy spectrum is measured over the full kinematic range using a new, inclusive technique, allowing stringent tests of predictions for its shape and a precise measurement of x{sub B} = 0.710 ± 0.003(stat.) ± 0.006(syst.) (Preliminary). A detailed study of correlations in rapidity y between pairs of identified [pi]{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}} and p/{bar p} confirms that strangeness and baryon number are conserved locally, and shows local charge conservation between meson-baryon and strange-nonstrange pairs. Flavor-dependent long-range correlations are observed for all combinations of these hadron species, yielding new information on leading particle production. The first study of correlations using rapidities signed such that y 0 corresponds to the quark direction provides additional new insights into fragmentation, including the first direct observation of baryon number ordering along the q{bar q} axis.

Book excerpt: This talk reviews seven SLD papers, which provide useful, unique, and precise contributions to our understanding of hadron production in the decay of Z°'s produced in ee− collisions. The data were gathered by the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) at the SLAC Linear Collider (SLC). This accelerator/detector is able to compete with LEP in many studies, in spite of smaller statistics, due to systematic advantages including a tiny and stable interaction region combined with a precise high-resolution vertex detector, excellent particle identification, and a highly polarized electron beam. The papers include studies of: factorial and cumulant moments; charged multiplicities produced by b, c, and uds quarks; rapidity gaps; orientations and energy partitions of three-jet events; jet handedness; triple-product correlation in polarized Z° decays to three jets; and [pi]{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p, K°, and [Lambda] production in Z° decays. Comparisons are made to LEP results where appropriate.

Book excerpt: The authors have measured the differential cross sections for the production of [pi]{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, K°, K{sup *}(892), [phi](1020), p and [Lambda] in hadronic Z° decays and in subsets of flavor-tagged Z° → light-flavor (u{bar u}, d{bar d}, or s{bar s}), Z° → c{bar c} and Z° → b{bar b} events. Charged hadrons were identified with the SLD Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector. A vertex detector was employed to select flavor-enriched samples, and the polarized electron beam from SLC was used to tag quark and antiquark jets. The authors observes a flavor dependence in the hadron fragmentation functions. They also present evidence for leading particle production in hadronic decays of the Z° boson to light-flavor jets and a direct measurement of the strangeness suppression factor [gamma]{sub s}.

We report on several new studies of 3- and 4-jet hadronic Z° decays, in which jets are identified as quark, antiquark or gluon. The 3-jet Z° --> b anti-bg rate is sensitive to the b-quark mass; prospects for measuring m{sub b} are discussed. The gluon energy spectrum is measured over the full kinematic range, providing an improved test of QCD and limits on anomalous b anti-bg couplings. The parity violation in Z° --> b anti-bg decays is consistent with electroweak theory plus QCD. New tests of T- and CP-conservation at the bbg vertex are performed. Book excerpt: We present preliminary results on three SLD analyses: the gluon energy spectrum in 3-jet b{bar b}g events, the rate of g 2!b{bar b}, and the b fragmentation function in Z° decays. The gluon energy spectrum, measured over the full kinematic range, is compared with perturbative QCD predictions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present new studies of 3-jet final states from hadronic Z0 decays recorded by the SLD experiment, in which jets are identified as quark, anatiquark or gluon. our gluon energy spectrum, measured over the full kinematic range, is consistent with the predictions of QCD, and we derive a limit on an anomalous chromomagnetic bbg coupling. We measure the parity violation in Z0 decays into b anti-bg to be consistent with the predictions of electroweak theory and QCD, and perform new tests of T- and CP-conservation at the bbg vertex. We also present a new technique for reconstructing the energy of a B hadron using the set of charged tracks attached to a secondary vertex. The B hadron energy spectrum is measured over the full kinematic range, allowing improved tests of predictions for the shape of the spectrum. The average scaled energy is measured to be x

Book QCD Tests with Polarized Beams

Download or read book QCD Tests with Polarized Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present three QCD studies performed by the SLD experiment at SLAC, utilizing the highly polarized SLC electron beam. They examined particle production differences in light quark and antiquark hemispheres, and observed more high momentum baryons and K−'s than antibaryons and K's in quark hemispheres, consistent with the leading particle hypothesis. They performed a search for jet handedness in light q- and {anti q}-jets. Assuming Standard Model values of quark polarization in Z° decays, they have set an improved upper limit on the analyzing power of the handedness method. They studied the correlation between the Z° spin and the event-plane orientation in polarized Z° decays into three jets.

Book QCD Radiation in Top Antitop and Z Jets Final States

Download or read book QCD Radiation in Top Antitop and Z Jets Final States written by Kiran Joshi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis contains new research in both experimental and theoretical particle physics, making important contributions in each. Two analyses of collision data from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC are presented, as well as two phenomenological studies of heavy coloured resonances that could be produced at the LHC. The first data analysis was the measurement of top quark-antiquark production with a veto on additional jet activity. As the first detector-corrected measurement of jet activity in top-antitop events it played an important role in constraining the theoretical modelling, and ultimately reduced these uncertainties for ATLAS's other top-quark measurements by a factor of two. The second data analysis was the measurement of Z+2jet production and the observation of the electroweak vector boson fusion (VBF) component. As the first observation of VBF at a hadron collider, this measurement demonstrated new techniques to reliably extract VBF processes and paved the way for future VBF Higgs measurements. The first phenomenological study developed a new technique for identifying the colour of heavy resonances produced in proton-proton collisions. As a by-product of this study an unexpected and previously unnoticed correlation was discovered between the probability of correctly identifying a high-energy top and the colour structure of the event it was produced in. The second phenomenological study explored this relationship in more detail, and could have important consequences for the identification of new particles that decay to top quarks.
