Book excerpt: The Tevatron collider has been remarkably successful and has so far delivered more than 11 fb−1 of data to both the CDF and D0 experiments. Though the LHC has replaced the Tevatron as the world's most powerful collider, years of detector calibration, the huge size of the dataset and the nature of pp collisions will keep the Tevatron competitive in many selected topics in the near future. More than 10 fb−1 of data has been collected by each experiment. Good understanding of the detector performance has been demonstrated by the high precision W boson mass (?M{sub W} = 31 MeV) and top quark mass (?M{sub t} = 1.06 GeV) measurements. We report the latest electroweak and QCD results from both experiments. Most analyses presented here used 4-6 fb−1 of data.

Book excerpt: This paper presents the latest measurements of the properties of the top quark as determined by the DØ and CDF collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron p{anti p} Collider. Both experiments have studied the all-hadronic decay mode of t{anti t} events. The top quark mass measurement has been refined over the past year, with the addition of new channels and a re-evaluation of some of the earlier ones. There are recent studies of the mass of the t{anti t} system, the helicity of the W bosons in the top quark decays, and of the correlation of the spins of the top and antitop quarks. New results are also reported on searches for charged Higgs bosons in top quark decay, and for electroweak production of single top quarks.

In particular, measurements of single top quark and double top quark production, the $t\bar{t}$ forward-backward asymmetry and the top quark mass are discussed.

Book excerpt: An overview of recent top quark measurements using the full Run II data set of CDF or D0 at the Tevatron is presented. Results are complementary to the ones at the LHC. Recent measurements of the production cross section of top quarks in strong and electroweak production and of top quark production asymmetries are presented. The latter includes the measurement of the tt-bar production asymmetry by D0 in the dilepton decay channel. Within their uncertainties the results from all these measurements agree with their respective Standard Model expectation. Finally latest updates on measurements of the top quark mass are discussed, which at the time of the conference are the most precise determinations.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first experimental calibration of the top-quark Monte-Carlo mass. It also provides the top-quark mass-independent and most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurement to date. The most precise measurements of the top-quark mass obtain the top-quark mass parameter (Monte-Carlo mass) used in simulations, which are partially based on heuristic models. Its interpretation in terms of mass parameters used in theoretical calculations, e.g. a running or a pole mass, has been a long-standing open problem with far-reaching implications beyond particle physics, even affecting conclusions on the stability of the vacuum state of our universe. In this thesis, this problem is solved experimentally in three steps using data obtained with the compact muon solenoid (CMS) detector. The most precise top-quark pair production cross-section measurements to date are performed. The Monte-Carlo mass is determined and a new method for extracting the top-quark mass from theoretical calculations is presented. Lastly, the top-quark production cross-sections are obtained – for the first time – without residual dependence on the top-quark mass, are interpreted using theoretical calculations to determine the top-quark running- and pole mass with unprecedented precision, and are fully consistently compared with the simultaneously obtained top-quark Monte-Carlo mass.
