Book excerpt: The Nunavik Inuit Women's Manifesto (2006) states that, "Child sexual abuse is absolutely intolerable and must end. All types of violence? against women and children must cease to occur." Sexual violence has been denounced by Inuit communities and by many other communities, given that significant mental health and physical health problems are related to exposure to sexual abuse that occurs while growing up and during adulthood (Briere & Elliott, 1993, 1994; Campbell & Soeken, 1999; Coker et al., 2002; Curtis et al., 2002; Golding, 1999; Koss et al., 1991; Wright et al., 2004). Victims of all ages may also develop a negative self-image, feelings of lack of control because they were unable to protect themselves from the abuse, and a negative image of the world ? perceiving others as potential threats instead of possible protectors (Macmillan, 2001). Violence is thus a great burden on individual victims and their families. Moreover, studies also demonstrate the potential significant consequences of violence on secondary victims (neighbours, co-workers and friends), which have important repercussions on society as a whole (Ruback & Thompson, 2001). A report by the Pauktuutit Inuit Women's Association in 2003 emphasized the lack of awareness of child sexual abuse in Inuit communities and a lack of resources adapted to the Inuit (Kuptana, 1991; Pauktuutit, 2003). Despite these concerns, virtually no study has been conducted to determine the rate and nature of sexual abuse in Canadian Inuit communities.

Book Preventing Intimate Partner Violence in Uganda Kenya and Tanzania

Download or read book Preventing Intimate Partner Violence in Uganda Kenya and Tanzania written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, between 15-71 percent of women will experience physical and/or sexual abuse from an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime. Too often this preventable form of violence is repetitive in nature, occurring at multiple points across the lifespan. The prevalence of intimate partner violence is on the higher end of this spectrum in East Africa, with in-country demographic and health surveys indicating that approximately half of all women between the ages of 15-49 in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania having experienced physical or sexual abuse within a partnership. It is now widely accepted that preventing intimate partner violence is possible and can be achieved through a greater understanding of the problem; its risk and protective factors; and effective evidence-informed primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. To that end, on August 11-12, 2014, the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Global Violence Prevention, in a collaborative partnership with the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, convened a workshop focused on informing and creating synergies within a diverse community of researchers, health workers, and decision makers committed to promoting intimate partner violence-prevention efforts that are innovative, evidence-based, and crosscutting. This workshop brought together a variety of stakeholders and community workers from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania to engage in a meaningful, multidirectional dialogue regarding intimate partner violence in the region. Preventing Intimate Partner Violence in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania summarizes the presentations and discussion of the workshop.

Book Sexual Violence in Intimacy

Download or read book Sexual Violence in Intimacy written by M. Gabriela Torres and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating interdisciplinary and cross-cultural analysis, this volume advances our understanding of sexual violence in intimacy through the development of more nuanced and evidence-based conceptual frameworks. Sexual violence in intimacy is a global pandemic that causes individual physical and emotional harm as well as wider social suffering. It is also legal and culturally condoned in much of the world. Bringing together international and interdisciplinary research, the book explores marital rape as individual suffering that is best understood in cultural and institutional context. Gendered narratives and large-scale surveys from India, Ghana and Africa Diasporas, Pacific Islands, Denmark, New Zealand, the United States, and beyond illuminate cross-cultural differences and commonalities. Methodological debates concerning etic and emic approaches and de-colonial challenges are addressed. Finally, a range of policy and intervention approaches—including art, state rhetoric, health care, and criminal justice—are explored. This book provides much needed scholarship to guide policymakers, practitioners, and activists as well as for researchers studying gender-based violence, marriage, and kinship, and the legal and public health concerns of women globally. It will be relevant for upper-level students and scholars in anthropology, sociology, psychology, women’s studies, social work and public and global health.
