Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apologeticus (Latin: Apologeticum or Apologeticus) is Tertullian's most famous work, consisting of apologetic and polemic. In this work Tertullian defends Christianity, demanding legal toleration and that Christians be treated as all other sects of the Roman Empire. It is in this treatise that one finds the phrase: "the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church" (Apologeticus, Chapter 50). There is a similarity of content, if not of purpose, between this work and Tertullian's Ad nationes—published earlier in the same year—and it has been claimed that the latter is a finished draft of Apologeticus. There arises also the question of similarity to Minucius Felix's dialogue Octavius. Some paragraphs are shared by both texts; it is not known which predated the other.

Book Quinti Septimii Florentis Tertulliani

This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quinti Septimii Florentis Tertulliani: Apologeticus Adversus Gentes Pro Christianis IN preparing this edition of Tertullian's Apology I have endeavoured to meet the wants of young theo logical students and to supply such notes as it seemed likely would prove helpful to them in their study of a text confessedly difficult in style and abounding in refer ences mythological, philosophical, historical, and legal. In respect of style Tertullian is often his own best interpreter, and references will be found in the notes to parallel uses Of words and constructions in his other writings which should be carefully compared. For the sake Of convenience the composite text printed in Migue's Patrologia Latina, vol. I. (paris, 1844) has been made the basis of the present edition, but all the important variant readings have, I hope, been noticed, while some of them have been preferred to the text. An account of the manuscripts of Tertullian's writings is given in the Introduction to the first volume of Oehler's edition, and some remarks Upon the same subject will be found in the Preface to the volume of Tertullian in the Library of the Fathers (oxford. Book Tertullian the African

Download or read book Tertullian the African written by David E. Wilhite and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-06-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Tertullian, and what can we know about him? This work explores his social identities, focusing on his North African milieu. Theories from the discipline of social/cultural anthropology, including kinship, class and ethnicity, are accommodated and applied to selections of Tertullian’s writings. In light of postcolonial concerns, this study utilizes the categories of Roman colonizers, indigenous Africans and new elites. The third category, new elites, is actually intended to destabilize the other two, denying any “essential” Roman or African identity. Thereafter, samples from Tertullian’s writings serve to illustrate comparisons of his own identities and the identities of his rhetorical opponents. The overall study finds Tertullian’s identities to be manifold, complex and discursive. Additionally, his writings are understood to reflect antagonism toward Romans, including Christian Romans (which is significant for his so-called Montanism), and Romanized Africans. While Tertullian accommodates much from Graeco-Roman literature, laws and customs, he nevertheless retains a strongly stated non-Roman-ness and an African-ity, which is highlighted in the present monograph.
