Book Q Horatii Flacci Po mata Classic Reprint

Download or read book Q Horatii Flacci Po mata Classic Reprint written by Horace Horace and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Q. Horatii Flacci Poemata The object of the present Work is to furnish the student with a text book 'of convenient size, and which may contain, at the same time, a commentary sufficiently ample for all his wants. The larger edition of Horace, which appeared in the Spring of 1830, has supplied all the requisite materials, and such selections have been made from it as seemed best calculated to answer the proposed end. It will be per ceived, upon examination, that a large portion of the preliminary matter has been thrown out from the present edition. This, however interesting to the more advanced scholar, could hardly be deemed of immediate importance to the young student, on his first acquaintance with the Venusian bad. The Excursions, also, that were inserted in various parts of the larger Work, have been rejected from this, on similar grounds, and their places have been supplied by notes of a concise form, wherever these were needed. The most marked emis sion, however, is in the case of the critical notes on the Various Readings. Their insertion in the larger edition was a mere matter of experiment, and, unfortunately for the cause of classical scholarship in our country, the experiment proved an unsuccessful one. Various Readings, and critical notes of any kind, are objects'of peculiar aver sion to a certain class of scholars among us, nor can they see any thing inviting ih those fields of exertion which have yielded so rich a harvest of praise to the learned of other climes. It is idle to talk of conjectural emendations, when those'whom you address are satisfied with any text, however erroneous and philological discussions come recommended by no charm, to minds that regard every deviation from the beaten track as leading into the wilds of unprofitable theory. The absence of critical notes, therefore, from the present edition, will, it is hoped, be pardoned by the enlightened scholar, should this fork ever enjoy the good fortune, -which was denied its less favoured predecessor, of being brought to the bar of learned and intelligent criticism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera Omnia, Vol. 2: The Works of Horace; The Satires, Epistles, and De Arte Poetica Kiessling's edition came into my hands too late to be of full use. But I have felt again, as I said before, that the editor to whom the student of Horace is most indebted is Bentley; and I have felt more than before (though he only speaks to us through his text and short preface and a few papers in the Journal of Philology) how strong and trustworthy is the judgment, whether in purely textual questions or in the questions of interpretation which cannot be severed from text, of the most Bentleian of English scholars who have touched Horace, the lamented H. A. J. Munro. May I make two requests of the younger readers whose needs I have had specially in view - one, that they will read, both before beginning a Satire or Epistle, and also side by side with it, the analysis which I have prefixed to it and without which the commentary will be incomplete; the other, that they will not be deluded, by what has seemed the unhappy necessity of employing inverted commas for the double purpose, into mistaking interpretative paraphrase for translation? The latter I have attempted rarely; the former is often a convenient and necessary substitute for a long note. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalog provides a descriptive bibliography of books in the Ahmanson-Murphy Aldine collection at the University of California, Los Angeles, together with abbreviated notices of works not at UCLA. Handsomely produced, slipcased, and carefully annotated, this volume should become a major resource for Aldine studies and the history of the book. The Aldine Press revolutionized the production, accessibility, and use of the book. Founded by Aldus Manutius (ca 1452-1515), the press introduced a number of innovations that helped shape the development of the modern book, including italic type and the smaller, pocket-sized volume. By putting the Greek and Latin classics in a form that everyone could afford, it revolutionized scholarship: the uniform Aldine texts made comparison and collation universally available, and they were used in schools. Collectors were interested in the Aldine Press from the beginning; Jean Grolier acquired over two hundred of its publications, often having the books elegantly bound and handsomely illuminated. Since that time, the output of the Aldine Press has been sought after by scholars, book collectors, and librarians. Copies of its books are found in libraries all over the world, where they remain a prized possession and the object of much scholarly research. For thirty-two years, Franklin D. Murphy, who came to UCLA as its sixth chancellor, fostered the expansion of the Aldine collection and encouraged its growth. During the greater part of this long period he was joined in these endeavors by the Ahmanson Foundation, whose constant support permitted the collection to increase in both size and significance. Following Dr. Murphy's death, the Ahmanson Foundation continued its generous support for the expansion of the collection and, in addition, by means of a grant late in 1996, enabled the present catalog to come into existence. Book How the Classics Made Shakespeare

Download or read book How the Classics Made Shakespeare written by Jonathan Bate and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most eminent and accessible literary critics, a groundbreaking account of how the Greek and Roman classics forged Shakespeare’s imagination Ben Jonson famously accused Shakespeare of having “small Latin and less Greek.” But he was exaggerating. Shakespeare was steeped in the classics. Shaped by his grammar school education in Roman literature, history, and rhetoric, he moved to London, a city that modeled itself on ancient Rome. He worked in a theatrical profession that had inherited the conventions and forms of classical drama, and he read deeply in Ovid, Virgil, and Seneca. In a book of extraordinary range, acclaimed literary critic and biographer Jonathan Bate, one of the world’s leading authorities on Shakespeare, offers groundbreaking insights into how, perhaps more than any other influence, the classics made Shakespeare the writer he became. Revealing in new depth the influence of Cicero and Horace on Shakespeare and finding new links between him and classical traditions, ranging from myths and magic to monuments and politics, Bate offers striking new readings of a wide array of the plays and poems. At the heart of the book is an argument that Shakespeare’s supreme valuation of the force of imagination was honed by the classical tradition and designed as a defense of poetry and theater in a hostile world of emergent Puritanism. Rounded off with a fascinating account of how Shakespeare became our modern classic and has ended up playing much the same role for us as the Greek and Roman classics did for him, How the Classics Made Shakespeare combines stylistic brilliance, accessibility, and scholarship, demonstrating why Jonathan Bate is one of our most eminent and readable literary critics.

Book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace s Iambi

Download or read book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace s Iambi written by Andy Law and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace’s book of seventeen iambi (by convention called ‘Epodes’) contains some of the most complex and controversial poetry of his entire career. This new interpretation exposes a poet in the throes of the torment of writing. Horace crafts an artwork which reveals the agony of expressing agony. He struggles to find the words as he gives voice to the anticipation of grief. The poet’s inner demons conspire against him. Anything that could go wrong, does go wrong. At the end we realise that Horace might have never wanted to write this book in the first place. But the fate of this writer is to be forever persecuted by his own writing. Horace’s iambi are methodically stitched together. Meter, intertextuality, wordplay, and theme combine strategically to provide an utterly compelling and vivid watercolor in words. It is a work of art which is able to hold its place amongst any top tier poetry, in any language, in any era.
