In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. It is considered as a humane comedy about love and the English class system. Eliza Doolittle, fictional character, a flower girl who is transformed into a woman of poise and polish by Shaw in this play. According to playwright, character of Professor Henry Higgins was inspired by several British professors of phonetics. The last scene in Act V ends with another confrontation between Higgins and Eliza. Higgins asks if Eliza is satisfied with the revenge she has brought thus far and if she will now come back, but she refuses. Higgins defends himself from Eliza's earlier accusation by arguing that he treats everyone the same. Pygmalion was first produced in German in 1913 in Vienna. It was later on performed in England in 1914.

Book excerpt: Pygmalion both delighted and scandalized its first audiences in 1914. A brilliantly witty reworking of the classical tale of the sculptor who falls in love with his perfect female statue, it is also a barbed attack on the British class system and a statement of Shaw's feminist views. In Shaw's hands, the phoneticist Henry Higgins is the Pygmalion figure who believes he can transform Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, into a duchess at ease in polite society. The one thing he overlooks is that his 'creation' has a mind of her own. This is the definitive text produced under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence, with an illuminating introduction by Nicholas Grene, discussing the language and politics of the play. Also included in this volume is Shaw's preface, as well as his 'sequel' written for the first publication in 1916, to rebut public demand for a more conventionally romantic ending.

Book excerpt: "Ever since Pygmalion opened in London in April 1914 it has proved a very controversial play, from the (then) shocking language, to arguments about its correct ending. Critical interpretations have been similarly disputatious, encompassing views of the transformation of the impoverished Eliza Doolittle by phonetics expert Henry Higgins as either a story of economic and social liberation, or an example of the perpetuation of male control and self-interest." This new edition of Pygmalion includes George Bernard Shaw's definitive text, with both Preface and Sequel, and provides the most comprehensive scholarly treatment of the play to date.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pygmalion: A Romance in Five Acts AS will be seen later on, Pygmalion needs, not a preface, but a sequel, which I have supplied in its due place. The English have no respect for their language, and will not teach their children to speak it. They cannot spell it because they have nothing to spell it with but an old foreign alphabet of which only the consonants - and not all of them - have any agreed speech value. Consequently no man can teach himself what it should sound like from reading it; and it is impossible for an Englishman to Open his mouth without making some other Englishman despise him. Most European languages are now accessible in black and white to foreigners: English and French are not thus accessible even to Englishmen and Frenchmen. The reformer we need most today is an energetic phonetic enthusiast: that is why I have made such a one the hero of a popular play. Book excerpt: Pygmalion, a five-act romance by George Bernard Shaw, produced in German in 1913 in Vienna. It was performed in England in 1914, with Mrs. Patrick Campbell as Eliza Doolittle. The play is a human comedy about love and the English class system.Henry Higgins, phonetic, takes the bet that simply by changing the speech of a Cockney flower seller, you can, in six months, pass her off as a duchess. Eliza undergoes grueling training. When she successfully "passes" into high society, having in the process become a beautiful young woman of sensitivity and taste, Higgins abruptly dismisses her as a successfully completed experiment. Eliza, who now belongs neither to the upper class, whose gestures and speech she has learned, nor to the lower class, from which she comes, rejects her dehumanizing attitude. The play became famous as a film in 1938 and later as the stage musical My Fair Lady (1956), with a musical score by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. A 1964 film version of the musical featured Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn.
