Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores women of color’s grassroots leadership in organizations that are not singularly identified with feminism. Centered in New York City, Pushing Back brings an intersectional perspective to communities of color as it addresses injustices tied to domestic work, housing, and environmental policies and practices. Ariella Rotramel shows how activists respond to injustice and marginalization, documenting the ways people of color and the working class in the United States recognize identity as key to the roots of and solutions to injustices such as environmental racism and gentrification. Rotramel further provides an in-depth analysis of the issues that organizations representing transnational communities of color identify as fundamental to their communities and how they frame them. Introducing the theoretical concept of “queer motherwork,” Rotramel explores the forms of advocacy these activists employ and shows how they negotiate internal diversity (gender, race, class, sexuality, etc.) and engage broader communities, particularly as women-led groups. Pushing Back highlights case studies of two New York–based organizations, the pan-Asian/American CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities (formerly the Committee Against Anti- Asian Violence) and South Bronx’s Mothers on the Move/ Madres en Movimiento (MOM). Both organizations are small, women-led community organizations that have participated in a number of progressive coalitions on issues such as housing rights, workers’ rights, and environmental justice at the local, national, and global levels.

Book What is Pushing Hands in Tai Chi

Download or read book What is Pushing Hands in Tai Chi written by Heikki Nousiainen and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English that covers the many aspects of pushing hands in tai chi. It is also trying to answer the question, in the book title, what is pushing hands? The book also covers the strategy of close combat as it is an essential part of pushing hands. Although it contains some practical advice, how to train pushing hands, its focus is more to explain the whole phenomena than being a tool for training at home, as his first book in tai chi was. Tai chi classics and some theory is discussed, the idea being in these books is to start without theory(as the first book), dig in deeper in theory until pure “doing” is left again, back to tai chi unity and wu chi. Heikki Nousiainen is a professional tai chi teacher (even other martial arts) who also arranges wellnessweeks with tai chi in Italy, Croatia, Spain and in Finland both for companies and private persons. He has created a physical training method and a method for teamwork. He won international pushing hands competitions in the age of forty but a car accident made it impossible to continue. His biggest interest in tai chi lies in self-defense and philosophy, nowadays also in wellbeing.

Book The Pushing Hands of Translation and its Theory

Download or read book The Pushing Hands of Translation and its Theory written by Douglas Robinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an East-West dialogue of leading translation scholars responding to and developing Martha Cheung’s "pushing-hands" method of translation studies. Pushing-hands was an idea Martha began exploring in the last four years of her life, and only had time to publish at article length in 2012. The concept of pushing-hands suggests a promising line of inquiry into the problem of conflict in translation. Pushing-hands opens a new vista for translation scholars to understand and explain how to develop an awareness of non-confrontational, alternative ways to handle translation problems or problems related to translation activities that are likely to give rise to tension and conflict. The book is a timely contribution to celebrate Martha's work and also to move the conversation forward. Despite being somewhat tentative and experimental, it probes into how to enable and develop dynamic interaction between and reciprocal determinism of different hands involved in the process of translation.

Book The Economics of the Global Defence Industry

Download or read book The Economics of the Global Defence Industry written by Keith Hartley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes an original contribution to our knowledge of the world’s major defence industries. Experts from a wide range of different countries – from the major economies of North America and Western Europe to developing economies and some unique cases such as China, India, Singapore, South Africa and North Korea – describe and analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the defence industry in that country. Each chapter opens with statistics on a key nation’s defence spending, its spending on defence R&D and on procurement over the period 1980 to 2017, allowing for an analysis of industry changes following the end of the Cold War. After the facts of each industry, the authors describe and analyse the structure, conduct and performance of the industry. The analysis of ‘structure’ includes discussions of entry conditions, domestic monopoly/oligopoly structures and opportunities for competition. The section on ‘conduct’ analyses price/non-price competition, including private and state funded R&D, and ‘performance’ incorporates profitability, imports and exports together with spin-offs and technical progress. The conclusion explores the future prospects for each nation’s defence industry. Do defence industries have a future? What might the future defence firm and industry look like in 50 years’ time? This volume is a vital resource and reference for anyone interested in defence economics, industrial economics, international relations, strategic studies and public procurement.

Book The D tente Deception

Download or read book The D tente Deception written by Douglas Rivero and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Détente Deception examines the competition between the U.S.-led Western bloc and the Soviet bloc in the less developed world during the final years of Détente. Rivero assesses whether or not the Soviet bloc pushed for strategic gains in the Third World and whether this contributed to the U.S. decision to abandon Détente in 1979. This view is articulated by many acclaimed scholars such as Stephen Walt (1992), John Gaddis (1997), and Vladislav Zubok (2007). They make the case that during the final years of Détente and throughout the 1980s, U.S. policy in places such as Nicaragua and Angola was a calculated response to Soviet aggression in the less-developed world. This book challenges this position as the quantitative evidence points to U.S. aggression. Not only did the Western bloc push to maintain dominance over the Third World, archival evidence also suggests the US made significant efforts in Eastern Europe and Afghanistan during the final years of Détente to dismantle the Soviet bloc.
