Book Speaking Being

Download or read book Speaking Being written by Bruce Hyde and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking Being: Werner Erhard, Martin Heidegger, and a New Possibility of Being Human is an unprecedented study of the ideas and methods developed by the thinker Werner Erhard. In this book, those ideas and methods are revealed by presenting in full an innovative program he developed in the 1980s called The Forum—available in this book as a transcript of an actual course led by Erhard in San Francisco in December of 1989. Since its inception, Erhard’s work has impacted the lives of millions of people throughout the world. Central to this study is a comparative analysis of Erhard’s rhetorical project, The Forum, and the philosophical project of Martin Heidegger. Through this comparative analysis, the authors demonstrate how each thinker’s work sometimes parallels and often illuminates the other. The dialogue at work in The Forum functions to generate a language which speaks being. That is, The Forum is an instance of what the authors call ontological rhetoric: a technology of communicating what cannot be said in language. Nevertheless, what does get said allows those participating in the dialogue to discover previously unseen aspects of what it currently means to be human. As a primary outcome of such discovery, access to creating a new possibility of what it is to be human is made available. The purpose of this book is to show how communication of the unspoken realm of language—speaking being—is actually accomplished in The Forum, and to demonstrate how Erhard did it in 1989. Through placing Erhard’s language use next to Heidegger’s thinking—presented in a series of “Sidebars” and “Intervals” alongside The Forum transcript—the authors have made two contributions. They have illuminated the work of two thinkers, who independently developed similar forms of ontological rhetoric while working from very different times and places. Hyde and Kopp have also for the first time made Erhard’s extraordinary form of ontological rhetoric available for a wide range of audiences, from scholars at work within a variety of academic disciplines to anyone interested in exploring the possibility of being for human beings. From the Afterword: I regard Speaking Being as an enormously important contribution to understanding Heidegger and Erhard. The latter has received far too little serious academic attention, and this book begins to make up for that lack. Moreover, the book’s analysis of Heidegger’s thought is among the best that I have ever read. I commend this book to all readers without reservation. Michael E. Zimmerman, Professor Emeritus, University of Colorado, Boulder

Book Actualization

Download or read book Actualization written by Henning Andersen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers consolidates the observation that linguistic change typically is actualized step by step: any structural innovation being introduced, accepted, and generalized, over time, in one grammatical environment after another, in a progression that can be understood by reference to the markedness values and the ranking of the conditioning features. The Introduction to the volume and a chapter by Henning Andersen clarify the theoretical bases for this observation, which is exemplified and discussed in separate chapters by Kristin Bakken, Alexander Bergs and Dieter Stein, Vit Bubenik, Ulrich Busse, Marianne Mithun, Lene Schosler, and John Charles Smith in the light of data from the histories of Norwegian, English, Hindi, Northern Iroquoian, and Romance. A final chapter by Michael Shapiro adds a philosophical perspective. The papers were first presented in a workshop on "Actualization Patterns in Linguistic Change" at the XIV International Conference on Historical Linguistics, Vancouver, B.C. in 1999.

Book On the Pragmatics of Communication

Download or read book On the Pragmatics of Communication written by Jürgen Habermas and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together Habermas's key writings on language and communication. Including some classic texts as well as new material which is published here for the first time, this book is a detailed and up-to-date introduction to Habermas's formal pragmatics, which is a vital aspect of his social theory. Written from 1976 to 1996, the essays show the extent to which formal pragmatics underpins Habermas's theory of communicative action. They are presented in chronological order, so that the reader can trace developments and revisions in Habermas's thought. The volume includes a critical discussion of Searle's theory of meaning, and Richard Rorty's neopragmatism. It concludes with Habermas's recent defence of his theory of communicative action, in which he reaffirms his view that interpretative understanding inescapably involves evaluation. This book will be an indispensable text for students and academics who want a clear and accessible introduction to the development of Habermas's theory of communication and its relation to his broader social and political theory.

Book Studies on German Language Islands

Download or read book Studies on German Language Islands written by Michael T. Putnam and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-31 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this volume present cutting-edge theoretical and structural analyses of issues surrounding German-language islands, or Sprachinseln, throughout the world. The individual topics of study in this volume focus on various aspects of these German-language islands such as (but not limited to) phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects of these languages under investigation. Collectively, the body of research contained in this volume explores significantly under-researched topics in the fields of language contact and language attrition and illustrates how this on-going research can be enhanced through the application of formal theoretical frameworks and structural analyses.

Book Language Operational Gestalt Awareness

Download or read book Language Operational Gestalt Awareness written by Eugene E. Graziano and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-09-18 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us is hopelessly trapped inside of a particular language matrix, until we become consciously aware of how this inexorable process relentlessly operates. This book presents an unified conception of what language is universally, for all sentient beings, in all of its forms and aspects; and how language phenomena operate, through unconsciously projected four-dimensional (time-space) gestalts, in specific situations in the real world, to produce meaningful perceptual closures and useful results. This book operationally identifies the universal "fundamental particles" (NOT phonemes, nor letters of the alphabet, etc.) of any language; and how these fundamental phenomenal "particles" combine, by the activity of unconsciously projected, four-dimensional, perceptual gestalts, to form the more complex language "atoms" (NOT necessarily, "words", etc.), and "molecules" (NOT necessarily, sentences, etc.), which interconnect further with the other culturally "mandated" physical artifacts imbedded in the specific situation, and operate physically, to produce the culturally prescribed, "meanings", and useful objects of intention, of the individuals of whatever species, which are intercommunicating, and inter-operating in the situation. Examples of many kinds are presented, often in terms of concerns, activities, and operations relating to libraries. This book is multidisciplinary in scope.
