Download or read book The Carrot Purple and Other Curious Stories of the Food We Eat written by Joel S. Denker and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many otherwise well-educated readers know that the familiar orange carrot was once a novelty? It is a little more than 400 years old. Domesticated in Afghanistan in 900 AD, the purple carrot, in fact, was the dominant variety until Dutch gardeners bred the young upstart in the seventeenth century. After surveying paintings from this era in the Louvre and other museums, Dutch agronomist Otto Banga discovered this stunning transformation. The story of the carrot is just one of the hidden tales this book recounts. Through portraits of a wide range of foods we eat and love, from artichokes to strawberries, The Carrot Purple traces the path of foods from obscurity to familiarity. Joel Denker explores how these edible plants were, in diverse settings, invested with new meaning. They acquired not only culinary significance but also ceremonial, medicinal, and economic importance. Foods were variously savored, revered, and reviled. This entertaining history will enhance the reader’s appreciation of a wide array of foods we take for granted. From the carrot to the cabbage, from cinnamon to coffee, from the peanut to the pistachio, the plants, beans, nuts, and spices we eat have little-known stories that are unearthed and served here with relish.

When his life was at its lowest, he came up with a plan to get it back on track. In his own words: “This is a product of what I had to learn in order to get my life squared away. I woke up one morning in a treatment center. My wife had left me. I was almost broke and was raising twin boys by myself. I couldn’t believe it. I had done all the things an American dad is supposed to do: college, marriage, job, mortgage, kids. And yet I was totally unhappy and not a little bit screwed up. What happened? I had no clue.” If your life isn’t going quite the way you’d like it, if your dream seems out of reach, don’t worry. “I had to learn to believe in myself. This book offers one way to do that. “You can do this!”

A Bright Young Thing of that Era would tell her “Sheik” that she considered him to be the bee’s knees , and the cat’s pajamas and she was going bananas over him, but … if he was found escorting any other “Sheba” around to trip the light fantastic, she would have his blood for breakfast. So what is there in this not so humble plant, which makes it such an integral part of popular culture, as well as slang? Well, firstly, bananas are delicious treats to have throughout the day. Also, they are rich in potassium and other minerals, which keep you fit and fine and glowing and chirpy. Also, the name is rather amusing, so no wonder the whole world has gone bananas over bananas. Since millenniums, the economies of countries have depended upon this delicious fruit. You can eat these bananas and raw or you can need them ripe. You can roast them, fry them, boil them, mash them, and then your imagination is the limit to which particular use, you want to put these bananas. Baby food definitely consists of mashed bananas Bananas are normally eaten raw, but when you decide to cook them, you are going to choose bananas called plantains with more starch content. They may be raw bananas. The color of our banana ranges from green to yellow. You may also have brown, red, and purple bananas depending on the species and the state of ripeness. The bananas were called Musa sapientum by scientists before, but that name has now gone out of use. The banana species which we eat now belong to Musa balbisiana and Musa acuminata. Hybrids are also very popular, especially when Musa balbisiana is crossed with M.acuminata. Most of the banana plants, which you find now are completely seedless. That is why if you are looking for seeds, to grow your bananas in your garden, sorry, you will need to plant a banana seedling, propagated by horticulturalist and gardeners. Bananas are native to tropical Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Malaya and other tropical regions, as well as Australia. They grew wild in the tropical forests here until people started growing them in New Guinea anywhere between 5000 to 8000 years ago. From there, they spread all over the world.
Download or read book Bumbling with the Arabs All the Way to the Bank written by Ben Koshkin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...the book is fun, but it is more than fun. It's a meditation on a collision of cultures, and it will make you think." – Dr. Allen Matusow, Professor at Rice University "a good read full of humorous antidotes of the author’s encounters with oil-rich Arabs in the Middle East and Houston." – Fred Hofheinz, Former Mayor City of Houston Bumbling with the Arabs All the Way to the Bank chronicles the true story of two young, naïve Houston real estate go-getters as they rub elbows with some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the Middle East. In 1980, Ben Koshkin and his business partner bumbled into a real estate deal and ended up with a Kuwaiti billionaire as a partner. Through this partnership, Koshkin befriended the undersecretary to the oil minister of Kuwait. For four years, if the undersecretary didn't sign the contract, Kuwait didn't sell the oil. Throughout the eighties, Koshkin and his partner closed over 250 million dollars' worth of business with the Arabs and experienced firsthand a culture the United States still doesn't fully understand. After every trip to the Middle East, men in dark suits, sporting sunglasses and short haircuts, would line up outside their Houston office to ask questions about their business overseas and the people they met on their trips. Bumbling with the Arabs All the Way to the Bank documents experiences and encounters most people will never come close to experiencing in a hundred lifetimes. At times, these stories were hard for even Ben Koshkin to believe-and he lived them! "Bumbling is outstanding, different, educational, and highly entertaining." – Clayton Lee, Clayton Lee Counseling "Having heard the stories from [Ben Koshkin] all these years, it was nice to have them come to life on paper. [His] writing style and how the book was structured made this an easy read that kept my attention throughout. Our perception of life and people in the Middle East is certainly different from reality." – Brad Dill, BD Realty Advisors “If I knew what my son was doing, I would never have survived to live this long.” – Naomi Koshkin Friedman, Ben’s 101-year-old mother

Download or read book Popular Culture New Media and Digital Literacy in Early Childhood written by Jackie Marsh and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a range of perspectives on children's multimodal experiences, providing a ground-breaking account of the ways in which children engage with popular culture, media and digital literacy practices from their earliest years. Many young children have extensive experience of film, television, printed media, computer games, mobile phones and the Internet from birth, yet their reaction to media texts is rarely acknowledged in the national curricula of any country. This seminal text focuses on children from birth to eight years, addressing issues such as: * media and identity construction * media literacy practices in the home * the changing nature of literacy in technologically advanced societies * The place of popular and media texts in children's lives and the use of such texts in the curriculum. By exploring children's engagement with popular culture, media and digital texts in the home, community and early years settings, the contributors look at empirical studies from around the world, and draw out vital new theoretical issues relating to children's emergent techno-literacy practices. With an unmatchable team of international experts evaluating topics from text-messaging to the Teletubbies, this book is a long-overdue, fascinating and illuminating read for policy-makers, educational researchers and practitioners, and crosses over to appeal to those in the linguistics field.
