Book excerpt: The Puritans had a keen insight into the attributes of God and the nature of man, expressing themselves so succinctly that they have been "re-discovered" by a new generation of believers in the Sovereign Grace of God. Thomas Watson, (c. 1620 - 1686) a Yorkshire native, was one of the most prolific of the Puritan writers, taking to his pen after the ejection from his pulpit at the restoration of Charles II. His works continue blessing those who appreciate solid, thorough exposition of God's word. This is a book of quotes by Watson sprinkled with those of a few of his spiritual antecedents and descendants, arranged topically, and covering a variety of subjects that will improve one's pursuit of godliness. Newly formatted, this little volume will also make a fine gift.

Download or read book The Holy Eucharist or the Mystery of the Lord s Supper Briefly Explained written by Thomas Watson and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a study of the virtue of Christ's blood seen in the Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is the eyeglass that we use to see the power of Christ's work. Watson uses Matthew 26:26-28 as his primary text, “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body. And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." He covers the seven supernatural virtues seen in Christ's blood and work; how Christians should prepare for the Lord's Supper; six differences between a sincere faith and a hypocritical faith, and finally, six signs of a great faith. Download or read book The Saint s Spiritual Delight and a Christian on the Mount written by Thomas Watson and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a combination of two of Watson's rare treatises that were taught consecutively to his congregation. The first is called "The Saint's Spiritual Delight" which covers the first part of Psalm 1:2, “But his delight is in the Law of the Lord.” He explains what spiritual delight is, how it relates to the Law of God, the fountain of spiritual delight in Christ, and then covers hypocrisy, conscience, holy delight and thankfulness. His second treatise comes from the latter half of Psalm 1:2, "...and in his law doth he meditate day and night." This is a wonderful guide for biblical meditation and one of the best Puritan works on the subject aside from its brevity. He covers the nature of meditation, the duty of meditation, the subjects of meditation, time for mediation, the usefulness of meditation, the excellency of meditation and certain rules for mediation. Download or read book The Believer s Privileges in the Covenant of Grace written by Thomas Watson and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Watson explains what the biblical privileges of the Covenant of Grace are for a believer. He demonstrates that such privileges are in fact benefits lavished on the Christian by the work and ministry of Jesus Christ, through his life, death, resurrection and present intercession. It is impossible to divorce the privileges of a believer as a redeemed individual with the connection he has with Christ in the Covenant of Grace. Christ’s covenant, ministered to the believer through faith, is the mode in which the believer will obtain all the benefits offered. There are, according to Watson, twelve royal benefits of being in the covenant with Christ’s blood covering the believer. Such royal privileges surround death, the ministry of angels, the presence of Christ in glory, a blessed inheritance, clear knowledge, perfect love, the resurrection and glorification of our bodies, a holy disposition in heaven, a vindication of our reputations at the judgment, a complete sentence of absolution from sin, and a public and honorable mention of all the good which believers have done in this life. After explaining his main text, “All things are yours,” (1 Corinthians 3:21), and expounding the twelve privileges, he spends the last third of the work showing important inferences which evolve out of this doctrine. Finally, he completes the work with its longest chapter (chapter 22) showing all the duties that a believer should exercise knowing, now, that he has received such privileges from Christ in the Covenant of Grace. Watson’s style and illustrative manner is second to none in Puritan literature. His illustrations are often short, pithy and to the point. They paint wonderful pictures to drive home the truth of the Scripture-filled work on this most important topic. It is truly a work that ought not to be skimmed, or read in a rush, but rather, soaked in and meditated upon to milk out of it all its benefits, that Christ may be clearly seen. Download or read book Suffering for the Law and the Gospel written by Thomas Watson and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rare and never before published work is a treatise on Revelation 11:3, “And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and three score days clothed in sackcloth.” Watson explains who the two witnesses are, and makes practical application of how Christians today must and will suffer persecution for the sake of the Law and the Gospel. The Law is a reflection of who God is. The Gospel is an announcement of what God does, and has done through Jesus Christ on the cross. As a result, Watson shows that it is expedient we should pass under the cross, to inherit the crown of glory. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Download or read book Embracing Your Identity in Christ written by Robert Davis Smart and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there is nothing sweeter than the Gospel, there is much more sweetness to be enjoyed. Few Christians seem to experience the transformation they hoped for, and often burn out too early. This is because we cannot escape the interpretation war each day over our identity. What if we are ruled by a lie more than the truth about who we are? What if condemnation has been their primary motivation, and has functioned for us more than grace, for too many years? What if, on the front end, we already have what we try so hard to obtain? Dr. Bob Smart walks us through the practical steps to embrace our true identity in Christ by helping us embrace our glory, gender, story, acceptance, sonship, and more by renouncing lies, condemning thoughts, and foolish strategies.
