Book excerpt: This string of vignettes brings life to Liv, who thinks she is flawed from birth. Although she has endured a life of hard knocks and despite the odds she faced, she has a strong will to continue to live. Guided by her own creative curiosity, she finds a cathartic release through writing and yoga. Along the way on her trip, she meets a Hindu deity; her twin flame, whom she hasnt seen in eons; and some thugs. On her nonattachment journey, after each tragedy she endures, Liv goes against the grain and loses friends and family not only physically and spiritually. She feels she has already lived many lives during her thirty-five-year-old time frame. The author adds her own knowledge of psychology, street smarts, and spirituality to weave together an enticing, comical, intense collection of short stories. The author shows that no matter how flawed you are, applying self-realization and self-reflection to your life will help liberate you. Additionally, she raises questions regarding reincarnation, changing DNA structure through yoga, and the authenticity of human relationshipsall while using colloquial language. She also touches on the narcissistic family dynamic and prompts the question Who is the real victim in any relationship dynamic?

Book excerpt: How can I overcome the fear of death? How can I stop being afraid of dying? What happens when I die? Where do I go when I die? Can we know what will happen to us when we die? In Why Fear Death?, author Curtis Coleman answers yes! Leveraging his college and seminary training in the original biblical languages and his experience building a successful international biotechnology company, Coleman masterfully weaves the Bible, modern science, and popular culture into a tour de force that demystifies death and argues that the fear of dying can be defeated by knowing what many have argued is unknowable. For most people, the thing they most treasure is staying alive on earth. As a result, they live their entire lives in bondage to fear of physical death. Coleman argues compellingly that we can confidently know what happens when we die, and we can know where we will go when we die. We can choose to have the information that can eliminate the fear of death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing a mate is like picking house paint from one of those tiny color squares: You never know how it will look across a large expanse, or how it will change in different light. Meet Janna and Graeme. After a decade-long tango (together, apart, together, apart), they're back in love -- but the stress of nine-to-five is seriously hampering their happiness. So they quit their jobs, tie the knot, and untie the lines on a beat-up old sailboat for a most unusual honeymoon: a two-year voyage across the Pacific. But passage from first date to first mate is anything but smooth sailing. From the rugged Pacific Northwest coast to the blue lagoons of Polynesia to bustling Asian ports, Janna and Graeme find themselves at the mercy of poachers, under the spell of crossdressers, and under the gun of a less-than-sober tattooist. And they encounter do-or-die moments that threaten their safety, their sanity, and their marriage. Join Janna and Graeme's 17,000-mile journey and their quest to resolve the uncertainties so many couples face: How do you know if you've really found the One? How do you balance duty to others while preserving space for yourself? And, when the waters get rough, do you jump ship, or do you learn to navigate the world...together?

Book The River Is Mine

Download or read book The River Is Mine written by Ardian Gill and published by Local Color Press. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ardian Gill's novel tells the story of John Wesley Powell's 1869 exploration of the Green and Colorado Rivers and the Grand Canyon. It is the adventure of ten men shooting rapids and painstakingly carrying and lining heavy wooden boats through cascades, cataracts and waterfalls. The action is breathtaking and invigorating, the story straight forward and clearly told. Written as a fictional expansion of the actual diary of one member of the expedition, the action is always front and center, but enriched by the interplay among the men, who include journalists, farmers, trappers, and Civil War veterans. Most intriguing, perhaps, is the narrator's changing view of the head of the expedition ? the brilliant, narrow-visioned, intrepid, one-armed Major Powell. Read this novel for the adventure, for the character studies, and for the satisfaction of how ordinary men can uplift us by their determination and physical courage. ?Superbly crafted, vividly told?powerfully presented and emotionally involving.?

Book Yiddish Yoga

  • Publisher : ReadHowYouWant.com
  • Release : 2010-10
  • ISBN : 145875748X
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Yiddish Yoga written by Lisa Grunberger and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Ruthie: a recently widowed New York City Jewish grandmother who doesn't necessarily come to yoga with the most open of minds. But when her granddaughter Stephanie gives her a year of yoga classes as a gift (''I think it will help you grieve, Bubby''), she doesn't want to risk offending her. At first, Ruthie is skeptical of yoga and its promise of renewal, healing, and transformation (''You know what's wrong with yoga? They haven't mastered the art of kvetching!''). She can't resist poking fun at some of the new words and rituals she encounters, translating the exotic language of Yoga into the more familiar idiom of her native Yiddish culture. As Ruthie's journey progresses from week to week, she forges new paths, new postures, and unexpected friendships, slowly overcoming her grief. Yiddish Yoga is a poignant, witty, and human story of love in its many expressions - between grandmother and granddaughter, between an older woman and her younger yoga teacher, between a widow and her beloved husband of fifty years. As Ruthie learns to let go of her past without forgetting, she shows us how to embrace the present with new vigor, strength, and courage - and above all, makes us laugh.

Book Healing Manuals from Ottoman and Modern Greece

Download or read book Healing Manuals from Ottoman and Modern Greece written by Steven M. Oberhelman and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of three iatrosofia (the notebooks of traditional healers) from the Ottoman and modern periods of Greece. The main text is a collection of the medical recipes of the monk Gymnasios Lauriōtis (b. 1858). Gymnasios had a working knowledge of over 2,000 plants and their use in medical treatments. Two earlier iatrosofia are used for parallels for Gymnasios’s recipes. One was written c. 1800 by a practical doctor near Khania, Crete, and illustrated by a second hand. The second iatrosofion dates to the sixteenth century; ascribed to a Meletios, the text survives in the Codex Vindobonensis gr. med. 53. The contents of these and other iatrosofia are predominantly medical, with many of the remedies taken from folk medicine, classical and Hellenistic pharmacological writers, and Galen. The book opens with a biography of the monk Gymnasios and his recipes and then a description of the Cretan and Meletios iatrosofia. The iatrosophia, their role in Greek medical history, and the methods of healing are the subject of chapter 2. The Greek text of Gymnasios’s recipes are accompanied by a facing English translation. A commentary offers for each of Gymnasios’s recipes passages (translated into English) from the two other iatrosophia to serve as parallels, as well as an analysis of the pharmacopoeia in the medical texts. The book concludes with Greek and English indices of the material medica (plants, mineral, and animal substances) and the diseases, and then a general index.

Book excerpt: "I was only twenty-two and already I was infamous..." So begins Amy Sohn's hilarious and wise debut novel, Run Catch Kiss. When the saucy Ariel Steiner returns home to New York City to be an actress, she is buoyed by daydreams of becoming Hollywood's hottest ingenue. Nothing can stand in her way -- nothing, that is, but her freshman-fifteen pounds, a senile talent agent, and the fact that she's living back home with her parents in Brooklyn. While waiting for the ever-elusive big break, Ariel discovers a hidden talent for channeling her erotic fantasies and becomes a sex columnist at New York's hottest downtown weekly. Soon, art and life are imitating one another, and the junkies, commitmentphobes, and other subjects of Ariel's columns are wreaking havoc on her life. But when she finally falls in love, the real Ariel must stand up. Is she a nice Jewish girl who wants to settle down or a brazen sex kitten who'd rather meet a deadline than the man of her dreams? Sharp, savvy, and irresistible, Run Catch Kiss is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on that dangerous turn-of-the-century phenomenon: the single girl who wants it all.

Book Immaculate Deception and Further Ribaldries

Download or read book Immaculate Deception and Further Ribaldries written by Jody Enders and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you hear the one about the Mother Superior who was so busy casting the first stone that she got caught in flagrante delicto with her lover? What about the drunk with a Savior complex who was fool enough to believe himself to be the Second Coming? And that's nothing compared to what happens when comedy gets its grubby paws on the confessional. Enter fifteenth- and sixteenth-century French farce, the "bestseller" of a world that stands to tell us a lot about the enduring influence of a Shakespeare or a Molière. It's the sacrilegious world of Immaculate Deception, the third volume in a series of stage-friendly translations from the Middle French. Brought to you through the wonders of Open Access, these twelve engagingly funny satires target religious hypocrisy in that in-your-face way that only true slapstick can muster. There is literally nothing sacred. Why this repertoire and why now? The current political climate has had dire consequences for the pleasures of satire at a cultural moment when we have never needed it more. It turns out that the proverbial Dark Ages had a lighter side; and France's over 200 rollicking, frolicking, singing, and dancing comedies—more extant than in any other vernacular—have waited long enough for their moment in the spotlight. They are seriously funny: funny enough to reclaim their place in cultural history, and serious enough to participate in the larger conversation about what it means to be a social influencer, then and now. Rather than relegate medieval texts to the dustbin of history, an unabashedly feminist translation can reframe and reject the sexism of bygone days by doing what theater always invites us to do: interpret, inflect, and adapt.
