Book excerpt: Christianity has a history that extends back over two thousand years, and it has endured through many changes in the world. Yet today the contemporary Christian church is facing new problems. How can the church continue to endure in the face of today's unique pluralistic and postmodern challenges? Pure Christianity clearly analyzes distortions that occurred in the primitive early stages of Christianity, and it restores the true identity of the Christian religion for future generations. Author Sung-In Park deconstructs the distorted beliefs of Christianity, going on to reconstruct Christianity based on the life of Jesus; he also redefines the meaning of sin, the gospel, faith, salvation, and the end, based upon a historical Judeo-Christian context. Believers will learn how Christianity was rapidly universalized in the first century, and how this universalized church would affect the future of Christianity. The Christian church you know today is the universalized one--not the church Jesus Christ envisioned. Yet by understanding the true plan of God for the world in Jesus Christ, you can be prepared to evangelize this world, without threatening, in accordance with the divine will of God.

Book Pure Fatherhood and the Hollywood Family Film

Download or read book Pure Fatherhood and the Hollywood Family Film written by Denise McNulty Norton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book maps father failure and redemption through three decades of Hollywood family films, revealing how libertarian notions that align agency with autonomy lead to new conflicts for the contemporary father. The films find resolution to these conflicts through a re-gendering of parenting as relationship. In their creation of a ‘pure’ fatherhood that is valorised as authentic for its lack of parental responsibilities, the films serve to challenge the perception that fathering enacted outside the nuclear family structure is fragile. McNulty Norton finds in the films a new essentialism that secures the pure relationship to the biological father, reinforcing his position in the face of changing family forms.

Book excerpt: A lost king… Goya is a rare magical being: a royal Beast. And not just any animal shifter, but the king of the earthly realm--the great white tiger. But now he is a king without a home, cut off from his kin, and trapped in a human body against his will. A single mother… Maddie Peterson is a career-minded single mother who has a fundamental distrust (and often, dislike) of men, especially in light of her cheating ex-husband and manipulative co-worker. But, then, she's never met a male like Goya before. Opposite worlds collide… When Maddie welcomes the silent stranger into her home, there is no denying their animal attraction. She teaches him how to be human, and he teaches her how to be wild. But when he gives his heart and soul to her, the pure spirit of the noblest of Beasts, is she brave enough to accept him as a partner into her life, as well as step into his fantastical, dangerous world?

Book The Poetry Circuit

Download or read book The Poetry Circuit written by Peter B. Howarth and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Live performance has changed poetry more than anything else in the last hundred years: it has given poets new audiences and a new economy, and it has generated new styles, from Imagism, to confessional, to contemporary Spoken Word. But the creative impact that public reading had right through the twentieth century has not been well understood. Mixing close listening to archive performances with intimate histories of modernist venues and promotors, The Poetry Circuit tells the story of how poets met their audience again, and how the feedback loops between their voices, the venues, and the occasions turned poems into running dramas between poet and listener. A nervous T. S. Eliot reveals himself to be anything but impersonal, while Marianne Moore's accident-prone readings become subtle ways of keeping her poems in constant re-draft. Robert Frost used his poems to spar with his fans and rivals, while Langston Hughes wrote Ask Your Mama to expose the prejudice circulating in the room as he spoke it. The Poetry Circuit also shows how the post-war reading boom made new kinds of poetry involving their audience and setting in the performance, such as John Ashbery's anti-charismatic Poets' Theatre, Amiri Baraka's documentary soundtracks of the streets, or the confessional readings of Allen Ginsberg, which shame the listeners more than the poet. Covering the first seventy years of the poetry reading, The Poetry Circuit demonstrates that there never were 'page' and 'stage' poets: the reading simply changed what every modern poet could do.

If you dig deep enough, you might not like what’s in that steel vault!” Like every small town in the rural south, Coppertown has its quirks and its secrets. Jessica Winslow, a young, beautiful curator at a local museum, feels it is up to her to unravel these skeletons starting with an exhibition project called “Black Widow Swamp,” one of the town’s most embarrassing myths. After receiving an anonymous “top secret” file on the mysterious landmark, she opens up a Pandora’s Box to a seventy-year-old murder case on a drifter by the name of Tresstina Bandeau. As Jessica digs deeper to the truth, she realizes the real truth is in her backyard, and she’s not safe from what is coming her way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excellence in Publishing Award, Association of Catholic Publishers Honorable Mention, Catholic Press Association Book Award Finalist, Washington State Book Award Pure Act tells the story of poet Robert Lax, whose quest to live a true life as both an artist and a spiritual seeker inspired Thomas Merton, Jack Kerouac, William Maxwell and a host of other writers, artists and ordinary people. Known in the U.S. primarily as Merton’s best friend and in Europe as a daringly original avant-garde poet, Lax left behind a promising New York writing career to travel with a circus, live among immigrants in post-war Marseilles and settle on a series of remote Greek islands where he learned and recorded the simple wisdom of the local people. Born a Jew, he became a Catholic and found the authentic community he sought in Greek Orthodox fishermen and sponge divers. In his early life, as he alternated working at The New Yorker, writing screenplays in Hollywood and editing a Paris literary journal with studying philosophy, serving the poor in Harlem and living in a sanctuary high in the French Alps, Lax pursued an approach to life he called pure act―a way of living in the moment that was both spontaneous and practiced, God-inspired and self-chosen. By devoting himself to simplicity, poverty and prayer, he expanded his capacity for peace, joy and love while producing distinctive poetry of such stark beauty critics called him “one of America’s greatest experimental poets” and “one of the new ‘saints’ of the avant-garde.” Written by a writer who met Lax in Greece when he was a young seeker himself and visited him regularly over fifteen years, Pure Act is an intimate look at an extraordinary but little-known life. Much more than just a biography, it’s a tale of adventure, an exploration of friendship, an anthology of wisdom, and a testament to the liberating power of living an uncommon life.
