Book The Bodhisattva Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment

Download or read book The Bodhisattva Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment written by Asanga and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 801 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ārya Asanga’s Bodhisattvabhūmi, or The Stage of a Bodhisattva, is the Mahāyāna tradition’s most comprehensive manual on the practice and training of bodhisattvas—by the author’s own account, a compilation of the full range of instructions contained in the entire collection of Mahāyāna sutras. A classic work of the Yogācāra school, it has been cherished in Tibet by all the historical Buddhist lineages as a primary source of instruction on bodhisattva ethics, vows, and practices, as well as for its summary of the ultimate goal of the bodhisattva path—supreme enlightenment. Despite the text’s seminal importance in the Tibetan traditions, it has remained unavailable in English except in fragments. Engle’s translation, made from the Sanskrit original with reference to the Tibetan translation and commentaries, will enable English readers to understand more fully and clearly what it means to be a bodhisattva and practitioner of the Mahāyāna tradition.

Book Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras

Download or read book Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sutras written by Maitreya and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Buddhist masterpiece Ornament of the Great Vehicle Sūtras, often referred to by its Sanskrit title, Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, is part of a collection known as the Five Maitreya Teachings, a set of philosophical works that have become classics of the Indian Buddhist tradition. Maitreya, the Buddha’s regent, is held to have entrusted these profound and vast instructions to the master Asaṅga in the heavenly realm of Tuṣita. The Ornament provides a comprehensive description of the bodhisattva’s view, meditation, and enlightened activities. Bodhisattvas are beings who, out of vast love for all sentient beings, have dedicated themselves to the task of becoming fully awakened buddhas, capable of helping all beings in innumerable and vast ways to become enlightened themselves. To fully awaken requires practicing great generosity, patience, energy, discipline, concentration, and wisdom, and Maitreya’s text explains what these enlightened qualities are and how to develop them. This volume includes commentaries by Khenpo Shenga and Ju Mipham, whose discussions illuminate the subtleties of the root text and provide valuable insight into how to practice the way of the bodhisattva. Drawing on the Indian masters Vasubandhu and, in particular, Sthiramati, Mipham explains the Ornament with eloquence and brilliant clarity. This commentary is among his most treasured works.

Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Joe Pickett series comes a thrilling collection of suspense stories about the Wyoming he knows so well—and the dark deeds and impulses that can be found there... C. J. Box has been hailed for his brilliant storytelling, with a style rich in character, suspense, and sense of place. That same brilliance is exemplified in the ten riveting stories—three of them never before published—that make up Shots Fired. In “One-Car Bridge,” one of four Joe Pickett stories, Pickett goes up against a just plain mean landowner, with disastrous results. In “Shots Fired,” his investigation into a radio call nearly ends up being the last thing he ever does. “Pirates of Yellowstone,” features two Eastern European tough guys who find out what it means to be strangers in a strange land, and in “Le Sauvage Noble,” the stranger is a Lakota in Paris who enjoys playing the noble savage for the French women—until he meets Sophie. Then he discovers what savage really means.... Shots Fired is proof once again why “Box is a force to be reckoned with” (The Providence Journal-Bulletin).

Book Semiotics with a Conscience

Download or read book Semiotics with a Conscience written by Marcel Danesi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonstrating how semiotic theory and method can be applied to decoding false representations and dangerous discourses, this book explores how semiotics can be used as a potentially powerful science of conscience. Confronting the sometimes negative perception of semiotics as academically inward-looking and lacking in morality, Marcel Danesi turns this view on its head. Instead, Danesi highlights how the same techniques that have allowed the use of semiotics for self-serving commercial purposes, such as advertising or marketing, could also be applied to deciphering current world problems. Through describing the semiotic notions and methods that can be used to analyze misrepresentations, propaganda, or meaning collapses, the book enables readers to become conscientiously aware of their hidden meanings and the harmful effects that they have on society. Identifying key issues of concern, such as climate change and anti-science discourses, it shows how they can be interpreted in terms of basic semiotic theory. This analysis of crucial issues demonstrates how semiotics can be used to raise awareness of critically important matters in modern society, and to encourage the development of more robust and ethical attitudes towards them.
