Book Pure Love Pure Poetry Pure Prayer

Download or read book Pure Love Pure Poetry Pure Prayer written by Peter J. Gorday and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time of his death in 1933 Henri Bremond, priest and member of the elite Academie francaise, had established himself in France, and increasingly in England and the United States, as a distinguished historian of Christian spirituality and as a Catholic modernist who helped to shake the church out of its dogmatic slumbers by embracing "pure love," artistic-poetic expression, and mystical prayer as the privileged manifestations of spiritual truth. Drawing on substantial new scholarship in France, that has resuscitated and reinterpreted Bremond's work for our own times, and that sees Bremond as an important precursor of current trends in literary interpretation as well as spirituality, Gorday surveys the entirety of Bremond's corpus of writing, setting his work in its context of his personal struggles, as well as the wider setting of French historical and cultural development.

Book Syntax in English Poetry 1870 1930

Download or read book Syntax in English Poetry 1870 1930 written by Will Baker and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1967 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inquiry restricts itself to syntax in poetry for two related reasons: 1) during the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth, literary scholars discussed word order only indirectly, in its relation to prosody, rhyme, scheme, and genre. 2) Studies of poetic language in the last 25 years have therefore been less concerned with the formal musical properties of verse than with diction.

Book Modernism and Theology

Download or read book Modernism and Theology written by Joanna Rzepa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study to examine the interface between literary and theological modernisms. It provides a comprehensive account of literary responses to the modernist crisis in Christian theology from a transnational and interdenominational perspective. It offers a cultural history of the period, considering a wide range of literary and historical sources, including novels, drama, poetry, literary criticism, encyclicals, theological and philosophical treatises, periodical publications, and wartime propaganda. By contextualising literary modernism within the cultural, religious, and political landscape, the book reveals fundamental yet largely forgotten connections between literary and theological modernisms. It shows that early-twentieth-century authors, poets, and critics, including Rainer Maria Rilke, T. S. Eliot, and Czesław Miłosz, actively engaged with the debates between modernist and neo-scholastic theologians raging across Europe. These debates contributed to developing new ways of thinking about the relationship between religion and literature, and informed contemporary critical writings on aesthetics and poetics.

Book Catholic Modernism and the Irish avant garde

Download or read book Catholic Modernism and the Irish avant garde written by James Matthew Wilson and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study constitutes the first-ever definitive account of the life and work of Irish modernist poets Thomas MacGreevy, Brian Coffey, and Denis Devlin. Apprenticed to the likes of W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett, all three writers worked at the center of modernist letters in England, France, and the United States, but did so from a distinctive perspective. All three writers wrote with a deep commitment to the intellectual life of Catholicism and saw the new movement in the arts as making possible for the first time a rich sacramental expression of the divine beauty in aesthetic form. MacGreevy spent his life trying to voice the Augustinian vision he found in The City of God. Coffey, a student of neo-Thomist philosopher Jacques Maritain, married scholastic thought and a densely wrought poetics to give form and solution to the alienation of modern life. Devlin contemplated the world with the eyes of Montaigne and the heart of Pascal as he searched for a poetry that could realize the divine presence in the experience of the modern person. Taken together, MacGreevy, Coffey, and Devlin exemplify the modern Catholic intellectual seeking to engage the modern world on its own terms while drawing the age toward fulfillment within the mystery and splendor of the Church. They stand apart from their Irish contemporaries for their religious seriousness and cosmopolitan openness to European modernism. They lay bare the theological potencies of modern art and do so with a sophistication and insight distinctive to themselves. Although MacGreevy, Coffey, and Devlin have received considerable critical attention in the past, this is the first book to study their work comprehensively, from MacGreevy's early poems and essays on Joyce and Eliot to Coffey's essays in the neo-scholastic philosophy of science, and on to Devlin's late poetic attempts to realize Dante's divine vision in a Europe shattered by war and modern doubt.
