Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical shift from Vedic traditions to post-Vedic bhakti (devotional) traditions is accompanied by a shift from abstract, translocal notions of divinity to particularized, localized notions of divinity and a corresponding shift from aniconic to iconic traditions and from temporary sacrificial arenas to established temple sites. In Bhakti and Embodiment Barbara Holdrege argues that the various transformations that characterize this historical shift are a direct consequence of newly emerging discourses of the body in bhakti traditions in which constructions of divine embodiment proliferate, celebrating the notion that a deity, while remaining translocal, can appear in manifold corporeal forms in different times and different localities on different planes of existence. Holdrege suggests that an exploration of the connections between bhakti and embodiment is critical not only to illuminating the distinctive transformations that characterize the emergence of bhakti traditions but also to understanding the myriad forms that bhakti has historically assumed up to the present time. This study is concerned more specifically with the multileveled models of embodiment and systems of bodily practices through which divine bodies and devotional bodies are fashioned in Krsna bhakti traditions and focuses in particular on two case studies: the Bhagavata Purana, the consummate textual monument to Vaisnava bhakti, which expresses a distinctive form of passionate and ecstatic bhakti that is distinguished by its embodied nature; and the Gaudiya Vaisnava tradition, an important bhakti tradition inspired by the Bengali leader Caitanya in the sixteenth century, which articulates a robust discourse of embodiment pertaining to the divine bodies of Krsna and the devotional bodies of Krsna bhaktas that is grounded in the canonical authority of the Bhagavata Purana.

Download or read book Bhagavan Shri Krsna Bhagavat Dharma written by Ashim Kumar Bhattacharyya and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shri Krsna and Bhgavat Dharma by Shri Jagadish Chandra Ghose written in Bengali discusses the teachings of Shri Krsna with quotes from various books of Shstras. Shri Krsna and Bhgavat Dharma discusses mainly four subjects: First the book considers Shri Krsna as Brahman, Ishvara or Bhagavn as is meant by "Ishvarah paramah Krsnah sacchidnandavigrahah" meaning "Krsna is Ishvara; He is Sat-Cit-nanda"; this has been supported by quotations from the Vednta, Purnas and Vaishnava Shstras. Second, the discussion is on Shri Krsna's divine love plays (Lil). Through these divine love plays the Bliss or nanda aspect of Shri Krsna, the Sat-Cit-nanda is expressed. These expressions are explained with quotes from the Purnas. Third, there is discussion about the main objectives of human life. Finally, the book explains what Shri Krsna taught His disciples Arjuna and Uddhava about His doctrines and Dharma using quotes extensively from Bhagavad Git and the Bhgavat. This English translation Bhagavn Shri Krsna and Bhgavat Dharma follows the format as closely as possible to the original Bengali book.

These commentaries are based on Srīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī's Sārārtha-varṣiṇī and Srīla Baladeva Vidyābhūṣaṇa's Gītā-bhūṣaṇa, respectively. The two works are mostly the same, with only a few differences here and there. In some places, one commentary provides additional information, while in others, they differ in the words they use. In most instances, they only change the word order, with no change in meaning, since Bengali is a language with a free word order. To facilitate a comparative study for the inquisitive readers, a single translation is given, with differences or additions from each of the commentaries shown in brackets.

Book Sri Caitanya caritamrta Madhya lila

Download or read book Sri Caitanya caritamrta Madhya lila written by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and published by The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. This book was released on with total page 2668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta is the main work on the life and teachings of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the incarnation of Krishna who appeared in India five hundred years ago. Lord Chaitanya introduced the chanting of the holy names of God as the prescribed method of God-realization for our time. He began what is today called the Hare Krishna movement, since the movement's founder, Srila Prabhupada, comes in the Chaitanya line of spiritual masters. Lord Chaitanya transformed the face of India in four respects: philosophically, by encountering, defeating and converting the greatest philosophers and thinkers of His day; religiously, by organizing the largest, most widespread theistic movement in India's history; socially, by His strong challenges to the religious inequities of the caste system; politically, by His organization of a massive civil disobedience movement in Bengal, more than four centuries before Gandhi. This English translation with commentary, by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, reveals his consummate Bengali and Sanskrit scholarship, his intimate familiarity with the precepts of Sri Chaitanya, and his pure devotion to God.

Book Shiva Sutras

  • Pages : 141 pages

Download or read book Shiva Sutras written by V. Ravi and published by MANBLUNDER. This book was released on 2011-01-23 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shiva Sutras are the aphorisms of philosophy of Shiva agama. Agama means acquisition of knowledge or traditional doctrine or percept. There are four sources through which knowledge can be acquired. They are perception, inference, comparison and non-apprehension. Advaita philosophy advocates non-dualism, in the sense that the Brahman and soul are not different entities. Soul, in fact is the mirror image of the Brahman Himself. But the Kashmir Shaivism, though typically follows the advaita philosophy, has a peculiar system of its own called trika. Trika shastra means three fold fundamental systems of Reality. Typically, shastra means order, command, percept rule, etc. Compendium of rules of life is also known as shastra. Trika shastra is again divided into three categories, agama shastra, spanda shastra and pratyabhijnana shastra. Shiva sutras come under aagama shastra. Spanda means throbbing or pulsation. It is the pulsation of Shiva causing a spiritual exaltation in the indispensable nature of the divine causing His svatantrya shakti, known as the Supreme Shakti or the Divine Mother, whose gross and subtle attributes are dealt with exhaustively in Lalita Sahasranaama. The third one pratyabhijnana shastra contains arguments and reasoning of identifying soul with Shiva. The present edition explains Shiva Sutras in a simple and easily understandable language. As far as possible, complicated Sanskrit terms have been avoided without sacrificing the intended meaning of those words. Aphorisms are quoted both in Sanskrit and IAST (International Font for Sanskrit Transliteration). IAST fonts are used throughout this book.

Book Temple Imagery from Early Mediaeval Peninsular India

Download or read book Temple Imagery from Early Mediaeval Peninsular India written by Archana Verma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the ways in which ideas of heroic discourse and the socio-religious and political needs of the period moulded iconography, this book explores the evolution of the iconography of the early mediaeval Hindu temples of the Indian peninsula, over the course of the sixth-twelfth centuries C.E. In order to study the socio-religious and political atmosphere in which the early mediaeval temple iconography grew and developed its specific forms, the author makes use of the inscriptions, archaeological and the literary materials ranging from the fourth centuries B.C.E. to the thirteenth century C.E., as these give an idea of the continuities and discontinuities in the ideas of heroic and political discourses which lie at the back of the visual art forms that they created. Of particular interest are the royal charters, issued in Sanskrit and Tamil, the religious narratives from the Sanskrit epics and the Puranas, iconographic canons that form a part of the religious texts known as the Agamas, written in Sanskrit, the court literature of the early mediaeval period and the early historical Sangam Tamil literature, apart from the archaeological material from the Indian peninsula. The author focuses particularly on exploring the ideas of power current in the society that created the narrative iconography of the period and the region studied.

Book Holy Ground Where Art and Text Meet

Download or read book Holy Ground Where Art and Text Meet written by Hans T. Bakker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 31 selected and revised articles in the volume Holy Ground: Where Art and Text Meet, written by Hans Bakker between 1986 and 2016, vary from theoretical subjects to historical essays on the classical culture of India. They combine two mainstreams: the Sanskrit textual tradition, including epigraphy, and the material culture as expressed in works of religious art and iconography. The study of text and art in close combination in the actual field where they meet provides a great potential for understanding. The history of holy places is therefore one of the leitmotivs that binds these studies together. One article, "The Ramtek Inscriptions II", was co-authored by Harunaga Isaacson, two articles, on "Moksadharma 187 and 239–241" and "The Quest for the Pasupata Weapon," by Peter C. Bisschop.
