Book The Ecology of College Readiness

Download or read book The Ecology of College Readiness written by Karen D. Arnold and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-27 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite extensive research, policies, and practical efforts to improve college readiness in the United States, a large proportion of low-income students remain unprepared to enter and succeed in higher education. This issue draws on the human ecology theory of Urie Bronfenbrenner (1917–2005) to offer a fresh perspective that accounts for the complexity of the interacting personal, organizational, and societal factors in play. Ecological principles shift the focus to individual differences in the ways that students engage environments and to the connections across students’ immediate settings and relationships. Viewing college readiness within an ecological system also reveals how the settings where development occurs are in turn shaped by more distant environments. The aspirations and behaviors that affect students’ college preparation originate in opportunities, resources, and hazards beyond their immediate environments. The ecological lens illuminates the need for coordinated, comprehensive efforts that affect students across the various levels of their environment and provides a framework for advancing college readiness research, policy, and educational practice. This is the 5th issue of the 38th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book Career Technical Education

Download or read book Career Technical Education written by Daniel W. Hancock and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 30% of California's entering 9th graders do not finish high school. In L.A. County the dropout rate, estimated at 55%, is higher than the graduation rate. The current focus on career tech. ed. (CTE) is a measure of the intensity of the search for solutions. CTE -- with its real world relevance and project-based learning -- is a way to engage students in education that is different than a purely academic approach. This study of CTE found encouraging evidence that CTE -- in its modern, academically demanding form -- can deliver an alternative approach to learning that can keep students engaged, help improve grade point averages and prepare students for both the work world and higher education. Book The California Standards for the School Counseling Profession

Download or read book The California Standards for the School Counseling Profession written by California Association of School Counselors and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2023 version of the California Standards for the School Counseling Profession provide an opportunity to expand upon the recent advancements made in school counseling. They are grounded in changes in policy, legislation, research, and the evolving role of school counselors across the Golden State. They support the paradigm that places emphasis on students through the lens of cultural sensitivity, equity, and accessibility. Their practices are evidence-based, data-driven, and culturally responsive, offering a continuum of services from prevention to extensive intervention. When school counselors adhere to the principles and criteria represented in these Standards, studies show that students experience greater overall success in their academic, career, and personal journeys. The Standards were developed to coincide with notable advancements in the field. These advancements include the expansion of the school counselor workforce with over 14,000 currently working in California schools. This number has doubled since the last professional standards were published in 2009. While the California counselor-to-student ratios vary across schools, the statewide average stands at slightly over 1:500. Significant strides have been achieved with a 1:500 counselor-to-student ratio, but it still surpasses the national standards twofold. Therefore, in 2022 Governor Newsom unveiled an ambitious 10-point plan aimed at enhancing student mental health, which includes a heightened commitment to increasing the number of school counselors.
