Download or read book The Wicked Sisters written by Betsy Erkkila and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-12-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative study of the lives and works of Emily Dickinson, Marianne Moore, Elizabeth Bishop, Adrienne Rich, and Gwendolyn Brooks focuses on the historical struggles and differences among and within women writers and among feminists themselves. Erkkila explores the troubled relations women writers experienced with both masculine and feminine literary cultures, arguing that popular feminist views often romanticize and maternalize women writers and their interrelations in ways that effectively reinforce the very gender stereotypes and polarities which initially grounded women's oppression. Studying the multiple race, class, ethnic, cultural, and other locations of women within a particular social field, Erkkila offers a revisionary model of women's literary history that challenges recent feminist theory and practice along with many of our fundamental assumptions about the woman writer, women's writing, and women's literary history. In contrast to the tendency of earlier feminists to heroize literary foremothers and communities of women, Erkkila focuses on the historical struggles and conflicts that make up the history of women poets. Without discounting the historical power of sisterhood, she seeks to reclaim women's literary history as a site of contention, contingency, and ongoing struggle, rather than a separate space of untroubled and essentially cooperative accord among women. Encompassing the various historical significations of "wickedness" as destructive, powerful, playful, witty, mischievous, and not righteous, The Wicked Sisters explores the power struggles and discord that mark both the history of women poets and the history of feminist criticism.
Download or read book Honey Beaumont written by Sara Bushway and published by 5310 Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Honey Beaumont's sixteenth birthday, he heard about a group of adventurers who had stopped a crime ring of highway robbers in New Texas. After sixteen years in an abusive home and then getting adopted just to become a "house-boy," Honey decided to leave his past behind and join The Adventurer's Guild. The Guild is a group of people who stand for justice and serve the commoner, as long as they can pay. Honey wanted nothing more but to travel around the world helping people. Illiterate and ill-prepared for a war-torn world, Honey embarks on the journey of a lifetime with the Guild. With newfound skills and friends in tow, he needs to find the strength and courage to return to his abusive home and save the love of his life. Embarking on a journey of a lifetime, being a hero is harder than Honey ever imagined, but at least he has his friends by his side to help him save the day. ------ Once upon a time, an unlikely hero was born out of servitude. Honey Beaumont, our hero, strived to do right by everyone and see justice prevail no matter the consequence. He dreamt of the intrepid Adventurer's Guild and helping those who can't help themselves. Every day our hero persevered the wrath of Byron, his owner. Helping those around him doesn't fill Byron's pockets, bringing out anger in his boss. One day, Byron brutally attacks Honey after a wealthy client offers to help Honey leave the life of servitude and be free. After the attack, Honey was scarred, disfigured, and with a grudge. He begrudgingly left his home and the love of his life behind to move into a new and luxurious home. Honey mingles amongst those in the new house and learns about the world's inequalities, especially between the nobodies and humans. But with his new owner forbidding him from being independent, Honey has no other choice but to leave this new luxurious life behind. Freedom for Honey meant joining the Adventure's Guild, becoming a hero, and helping his family leave the horrible place he used to call home. Will Honey be strong enough to take on Byron? Only time will tell. —— "The combination of dystopian pre-war chaos with the familiarity of the Old West creates an adventurous and threatening backdrop for the plot. Overall, an enjoyable read!" -Rachel Le Mesurier, author of Artie's Courage and The Musician's Promise Series "A wonderful read with an engaging, sweet protagonist in Honey Beaumont. It was a pleasure to get to know Honey, this fascinating world the author created, and ride along for all of the adventures." -Starred Review 5/5 "Reading this was amazing! Highly recommend to people who like action." -Starred Review 5/5 "An exciting tale in a unique world featuring Honey Beaumont's magical journey from who he was when he was born to the hero he was meant to be. A fast and exciting read. I couldn't put it down!" -Starred Review 5/5
Download or read book Receipt written by Karen Leona Anderson and published by Milkweed Editions. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poems about consumption: “Deft and insightful . . . resonant and witty.” —The Washington Post In her second collection, Karen Leona Anderson transforms apparently prosaic documents—recipes and receipts—into expressions of human identity. From eighteenth-century cookbooks to the Food Network, the recipe becomes a site for definition and disclosure. Like a theatrical script, the recipe directs action and conjures characters (Grace Kelly at a party). In these poems, the pie is a cultural artifact and Betty Crocker, icon of domesticity, looms large. From the little black dress ($49.99 Nordstroms) to an epidural ($25.00 co-pay), Anderson reveals life in the twenty-first century to be equally hampered and enabled by expenditures. Amidst personal and domestic economies, wildness proliferates—bats, deer, ocelots, and fungus—reminding the reader that not all can be assimilated, eaten, or spent. Receipt is like the lovechild of Anne Sexton and Adam Smith, illuminating the ways in which our lives are both constrained by pieces of paper, and able to slip through the crevices of cultural detritus down to the rich current of animal feeling beneath. “Anderson’s poems prioritize wordplay, assonance, and alliteration, which lead her to surprising turns of phrase.” —Publishers Weekly “Anderson doesn’t miss a beat as she traces our consumerisms—economic, sexual, spiritual, and more—with irony, wit, sadness and more than a little humor. Receipt is, quite simply, a terrific book.” —Linda Bierds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kidnapped from her front yard in Oklahoma eleven years ago, seventeen-year-old Eve Anderson lives a wretched existence in Bell Meade, Minnesota with her abductor, “Papa,” his common-law wife “Mama,” and Honey, Eve’s four-year-old daughter with Papa. Papa keeps the family hidden behind locked doors, boarded-up windows, and an eight-foot tall fence that surrounds their backyard. Emma Love, also seventeen, recently moved to Bell Meade with her Aunt Vi to take care of her big sister Noelle, who’s in a vegetative state after being savagely beaten by her boyfriend, Jack Armstrong. He is charged with grievous bodily harm, but Emma worries that the popularity and influence of the Armstrong family will keep Noelle from getting the justice she deserves. When Eve and Emma start talking through the fence that adjoins their backyards, they soon form a connection. Emma finds it comforting to talk to Eve about Noelle, and Eve sees parallels between Noelle’s situation and her own. She acts as Emma’s confidant, but does not reveal her own secrets, for fear of Papa’s wrath if he finds out. But when Papa decides to marry Eve and move the family to an isolated farmhouse, Eve must risk everything to save herself and Honey. Will she have the courage to escape from Papa before it’s too late? And will Emma have the strength to help her new friend, even as she struggles to save her own sister? TRIGGER WARNING: Dear Readers, On May 3, 2010, Yeardley Love, a beautiful, vibrant senior and lacrosse player at the University of Virginia, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, George Huguely. Everyone at the university, including my daughter Elizabeth, who was also a senior at the time, was devastated. As a former UVA alumnus and a mother, I was heartbroken over Yeardley’s death and never forgot her. The character of Noelle is loosely based on Yeardley’s story. The character of Eve is a fictional composite of two girls, Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard, who were abducted from their homes by psychopaths and held captive; Elizabeth for nine months, and Jaycee for over eighteen years. Fortunately, they both eventually escaped from their captors and returned to their families. Because of the subject matter of these girls’ stories, OVER THE FENCE is not for everyone. Although not overly graphic in nature, this novel does depict instances of domestic violence and sexual assault of a minor. If you get upset or uncomfortable reading this book, please set it down and call your doctor or local mental health office. If you are a victim of domestic violence or know someone who is, you can get help by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. For anyone who has information on a missing child, call the Missing and Exploited Child Hotline at 1-800-843-5678. And lastly, Sharon and Lexie Love, Yeardley’s mother and sister, co-founded the One Love Foundation, to honor Yeardley’s memory and help empower young people to have healthy relationships. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) wrote in 19th century American English and referenced long-vanished cultural contexts. A "private poet," she created her own vocabulary, and many of her poems have quite specific local and personal connections. Twenty-first century readers may find her poetry elusive and challenging. Promoting a richer appreciation of Dickinson's work for a modern audience, this book explores unfamiliar aspects of her language and her world.

Download or read book Microbium The Neglected Lives of Micro matter written by Joela Jacobs and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2023-09-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbium: The Neglected Lives of Micro-matter tells the story of small matter such as bacteria, coral, fungi, lichen, pollen, protozoa, and viruses. With short entries that are organized like a herbarium or similar specimen collection, the book is a "microbium"-both the term for a single microbe and a play on "microbiome." As such, Microbium makes visible the often overseen but huge impact of miniscule matter on human culture and the environment. Each entry is a "microscopic reading" that describes the natural history and scientific discovery of a particular form of micro-matter, while also telling a story about the cultural and artistic roles it has played over the centuries. From the poetry of Emily Dickinson to the "coralness" of coral reefs to contemporary literature about the COVID-19 pandemic, this book places micro-matter under a cultural microscope and translates the significance of the invisible interspecies social realm to the human scale, magnifying the many ways in which micro-matter matters. Ultimately, Microbium shows the potential of micro-matter to teach us how to revitalize our political and cultural systems, habits of thought, and aesthetic or representational modes.
